Location: It located in a brilliant part of the old city.
Price: great price for what you get.
Amenities: Everything that you need.

General - whilst the rooms and bathrooms are a little tired they are completely functional and are comfortable. The staff/ owners are welcoming and full of great information including local eateries, transport etc. The pool and common area are just what you need after a day of walking around and sightseeing. Cartagena is HOT

Gringo's and all others, you are welcome!! There are many hostels in the area, this is by far the nicest. It has a "home like atmosphere" It was a home previously and was turned into a hostel. The price of the hostel is fair. You may be on a budget, but stretch your budget a little for better quality. The staff is very friendly and they speak English for you non speaking Spanish travelers. There is laundry available. The beds are comfortable. The 3 hammocks are comfortable and oversee the pond with fish. There is a large kitchen table. The kitchen is readily available with anything you need to prepare your own food. I know i had a friend I met in the hostel from Colombia who made me dinner and breakfast....not so sure you will get all that but hey, its worth a shot! In all seriousness, the hostel/home is safe, quiet, and in the perfect location. You can walk 15 min to Bocagrande beach, or pay 6000 pesos and take a taxi. Dont be lazy.. walk! you can take some shots on the way to the beach. There are many restaurants in a 2 min walking distance. You can eat great lunch for 6000 pesos, like $3.50. The food is great and filling. Highly recommended

I was one of the first guests to stay at the Casa. It was by far one of the greatest hostels/guest houses I've ever stayed at. And this wasn't my first trip. I backpack every year so I speak from experience. We were staying at another hostel near by but switching to the Casa was not only a great decision, but a highlight of our 3 week trip.

Casa de la Chicheria is extremely well run, and extremely well located. It's got limited beds, which makes for extra special stay with the other people you travel with, so be sure to book in advance! You won't regret it. Thanks again to Megan, Maurizio and Angel. :-)))

My girlfriend and I spent a week at Casa de la Chicheria and loved it - the place has a really friendly vibe and is in a great location, so we ended up staying for longer than originally planned. The service was absolutely outstanding - when I accidentally left behind my jacket at the hostel, the staff went out of their way to post it to me in Bogota. Thanks very much guys!!!

I was very happy with my choice in Cartagena. There are not a lot of truly budget options, but this is a good one. It is right in the walled, old city and is walking distance to everything (everything is walking distance to everything, really). The hostel itself is very nice; all blue and white with two small courtyard pools (one with fish, one for dipping into). There are a coup,d of hammocks and a nice living room area for hanging out, using the computer or watching tv. There is also a big table for eating or hanging around at.

I stayed in the private room with the shared bathroom. The room was ok. It is nothing special - just two beds pushed together, but it was clean and had good AC. There are 2 bathrooms: one for boys and one for girls. The bathroom didn't feel super clean, but it was fine. The shower was nice. The kitchen also didn't feel super clean, but i only used it for storing stuff in the fridge. (I should say, it may not be that anything lacked for cleanliness, but maybe things were just a bit shabby. Either way, it wasn't a problem.)

By the way, the room with the private bathroom looked really nice. if i was going back, i would stay in that room.

There was a computer for use and free wifi. There was always someone on hand to chat with or help arrange travel plans. The people that ran/worked at the place were so nice and welcoming. That was probably he best part.

It's not the best place i have stayed, but i think that for Cartagena, if money is a concern, this is a great option.

I loved this hostel and stayed during two different visits to Cartagena. The location is perfect - right in the old town but not too close to the noisiest areas and within walking distance of everything. The staff were lovely and friendly, the dorm is comfortable and the living area is cozy. Not for those who want to party but ideal for travellers who want to be based in the old town, with good amenities in a quiet environment.

We stayed 3 nights in la casa de la chicheria in the dormitory and loved it. Location is great, in the old town. Place is clean and nicely decorated, beds are comfy, wifi is working well, price is good. Above all, myriam is very welcoming and helped us to organise our day trips to islas de rosario and the volcan, as well as our transfer to Taganga. Just perfect!

We really enjoyed our time at Chicheria. It can be hard to figure out the room configurations when using booking websites so here's the deal: you can stay in a mixed-gender dorm, a private room without its own bathroom (i.e., you share the hall bath with people staying in the dorm), or a private room with private bathroom. There are only three rooms in the entire place, so it has a very small, intimate feel to it.

The staff are very friendly and Miriam, who was on duty during the day, speaks good English so this was a good place to stay as our first stop in Colombia, given that we don't speak much Spanish. Chicheria feels very safe. Because so few people stay here, the staff lets you in just by recognizing your face -- the door is always kept locked. There isn't a safe in the room, or other secure area to store your valuables, so we had to resort to hiding things in different spots in our room or carrying it with us, but the place is so small that there really isn't much danger of a break-in. Anyone coming in off the street would be seen by the staff or other guests.

There is a small pool of the same type that most of the typical Cartagena houses have -- it used to be a cistern. It was very pleasant to swim there, since it's in the middle of an open air courtyard. My husband actually gave me my first snorkeling lesson here. Signs say the pool closes at 6pm, so there's no danger of people being loud late into the night. In general, this hostel prioritizes peace and quiet for its guests. If people were talking in the common areas late at night, staff would ask them to keep voices down. This is not a party hostel, so it is perfect for budget travelers in their 30s, like us. While we were there, a couple probably in their 50s was staying in the private-bath room and seemed quite content. It seems like a hostel appropriate for all ages. Chicheria is located on one of the quietest blocks in the walled city, so you can go out and have your fun, then come back and get a good night's sleep. You'll be located a bit away from the hustle and bustle, but almost anyplace in the walled city can still be reached in a 5- or 10-minute walk. Getsemani is a bit further away (15 min).

Chicheria has a clean and well-maintained kitchen, where the sink has hot water, so even though food is not provided, you can make your own. There is a grocery store around the corner.

We stayed in the private room that doesn't have a bathroom, and our bed was two twin beds pushed together -- so unfortunately it really wasn't comfortable. My husband and I either had to cram onto one bed, or sleep completely separately. I suppose they keep this configuration for the case of two same-gender friends traveling together, but for us it was unfortunate. But the mattresses themselves were comfortable, and the air conditioning worked well. We only had housekeeping on the first day out of 5 days we stayed, so that was a bit odd.

The only other downside was the bathrooms. For up to a dozen people, they have a total of two toilets and two showers. I have never stayed in another hostel that didn't have multiple stalls or small rooms in the bathroom. Chicheria has a men's bathroom and a women's bathroom, but in either case you can't even use the toilet if someone else is taking a shower, because of the way it's configured. It turned out to be less of a hassle than I expected, but for example when we were getting ready for a wedding we were attending, we ended up running late because other people were in the showers at the time we wanted to start getting ready. Women commonly use the men's shower if the women's is occupied. Putting some mirrors in the guest rooms would help because then at least people wouldn't need to use the bathroom for doing make-up and hair.

Chicheria seems expensive by U.S. standards for what it is, but the bottom line is that hotels in the old city of Cartagena are all very expensive. This is among the cheapest you will find, and based on reviews we read and conversations with friends, a good value for the money.

A beautiful hostel but at the same time felt like home. Stayed in dorms - clean and comfortable bunk beds, air con in the night. Shared bathroom was super clean with a lovely hot shower. Kitchen was well equipped and again super clean. Lounge and dining area had hammocks and a small pool - just really nice and laidback. A great location in the old town with delicious snacks, juices and fruit salads being sold to locals a street away in the morning. Staff lovely and helpful. After checking out, they let us stay there for quite a few hours making lunch and taking showers etc. Stayed in quite a few nice hostels in Colombia but this was definitely the best!
