Location:
Century is located close to the Lowu Railway station. We came on the KCR from Hong Kong, so it was convenient. It's about a 15 minute walk from the station. BEWARE however, that if you do NOT speak Chinese and cannot read it, you will have a bit of difficult time finding the hotel. Call them in advance to get good directions. I did not do this before and had to walk around with my husband for a while before we actually found the hotel. I found it because I remembered the photos from the website. The people are not particularly helpful and a police officer I spoke with in Chinese (I can speak Chinese but did not remember the Chinese name of Century Plaza) did not even know the hotel by it's English name. This was a bit frustrating!!
Hotel
The hotel itself is not too bad. The exterior is modern, pretty nice. Check in was relatively quick although they did have some problems finding our booking. The staff was pleasant- spoke basic English, enough to check us in (my husband does not speak Chinese) When they could not find our booking I had to revert to Mandarin to make things go faster. Our room was on the Japanses style floor. The beds are tatami style, low on the ground and hard. The room itself is decent-clean, small but comfortable. The bathroom was also relatively clean. Our package included free internet and we happily used the computer in our room both nights.
Staff
There are many bellhops, assistants, concierge throughout the lobby. Most are just overly friendly (for tips), but I had one very negative experience with a particular night staff member that was almost enough to convince me to write a letter to the corporate office. Because I am Asian, they assumed I was a Shenzhen or mainland native and would not allow me to go up to my room on the second night. The employee advised me (in Chinese) as soon as I stepped into the lobby that I was not allowed to "visit" any rooms after 11:00pm. My husband and I had just returned from shopping and I informed him in English that I was a customer at the hotel and from America. Even though I told him this several times he continued to block me from going up to our room. In a nutshell, he basically assumed I was an escort with an American gentleman. Extremely insulting! After arguing sometime with him, I finally spoke with a manager who apologized hesistantly and allowed me back up to my room. In retrospect I can understand that this area deals with heavy prostitution but found it extremely unprofessional that their staff are not trained properly to identify hotel guests. The employee never thought once to simply check my reservation in their system or my passport! This whole incident took about 1 hour and was probably the most negative experience I have had with hotel staff in my travels.
Food
There are some restaurants nearby (including one or two Western chains) but going out at night was a bit shady (lots of beggars and wanderers). We opted to eat in the hotel but was not impressed by the food or the price. (We ate at Seasons Resturant). The remainders of our meals were mostly eaten at the LoWu shopping center (also not great, but better priced).
Shenzhen
Our main purpose to visit Shenzhen was to do some shopping. We didn't expect much in terms of scenary and were right in doing so. Shenzhen is pretty much your average city with a lot of people traffic. It doesn't have either the brilliant signage of Hong Kong nor the excitement of Times Square. It's rather dreary (just imagine New York, without the lights and entertainment and still a lot of commercial activity.) We had just finished a tour in Beijing filled with historical landmarks and beautiful scenary and immediately saw the contrast between the two cities. We saw many homeless people, women offering "services" and two arguments that apparently broke out because of pickpocketing during the walk from the train station to the hotel. Petty crime did seem to be an issue around this area. We travel frequently and light, so this was not a problem, but new travelers, please be careful of pickpockets!! (This is not just for Shenzhen but all areas when you travel) Definately not a place I would take family or people who are used to resort style traveling. One good point (which is also what made the trip worth it to us) is the shopping! Plenty of cheap stuff to buy although you also have to haggle (we dont mind this) and deal with very aggressive sellers (think of the trading floor on New York Stock Exchange with no boundaries).
One thing I do have to point out is that the next time we go to Shenzhen, we will probably stay at Century Plaza again. The Shangri-la did not impress us much and the price difference is definately not worth it! For an additional 5 minute walk, we saved about 100 USD per night.
Hope this helps anyone going to Shenzhen! Happy Shopping!
There are many Indian Restaurants like Priyanka right opposite the hotel which was a life saver for a pure vegetarian person like me.The tariff is not too much making it economical.Do avail the Sauna and Steam which are complimentary once during the stay.
Overall a nice experience but has to work upon their staff especially the Bell Boys
Pros:
1. The price and location is excellent. It is located in a commercial district and near Luohu complex and many shopping malls nearby. The price is good too. It is like 3 times lower than Shangrila.
2. The gym is big. You get all the latest gym equipment. The only challenge is getting there which requires you to take the correct lift and navigate through the dark corridors.
3. There are some English channels like Cinemax and MTV.
4. There is a good variety of food with Indian food and Chinese Laurel Restaurant.
5. The vehicle services are quite affordable compared to other hotels.
6. There is a tea wholesaler just behind the hotel. You can buy good tea from the hotel.
Cons
1. The hotel looks old and dated. The furniture is in urgent need of improvement.
2. The wifi is very slow and unreliable.
3. The shower gel is a bit bland.
4. My advice is to skip the food offering. There are better offerings in Shangrila's Shang Palace for around the same price just a short 5 mins walk away.
In conclusion, this is a good value for money hotel for short stays. It does look aged as the hotel is old. But short stays are good as you will probably be away for the whole day. So the old facilities does not matter. For food, try Shang Palace at Shangrila as you will enjoy same quality food at sometimes cheaper price.
Room was spacious for 2 adults and 1 child. Room temp was actually cold (but can be adjusted) which we welcome as it was still quite hot outside. Our room had a comfortable bed with good sound proofing and black out curtains. Bathroom was clean, good size with strong shower pressure and properly stacked - no issues. Strong free Wi-Fi signal all over the hotel esp. our room.
The breakfast included in our stay was surprisingly not bad at all. There's a variety of Chinese breakfast combined with continental breakfast. I have my favorites here which was the kelp salad, the steamed red bean bun and of course, their fresh hot soy milk. The staff vs. service were a hit and miss. Some were friendly and accommodating; some were just there - one of the head counts in case you need them, I guess. For the most part, they seem to understand and speak English albeit a little. We are a pretty independent traveler so we don't need much hence staffing and service was not focused on nor was it an issue.
Hotel is situated about 10mins walk from the train station. There's also lots of eateries, massage parlor and shops just a walk away. It was raining when we went so that put a drag on our walking plans but the hotel provided us umbrella which was a nice touch.
Overall, though our stay was nothing out of ordinary... I guess, I'll say that this hotel was a little above average. Won't mind staying here again on our next visit.
NOTE: We didn't know this hotel had a pool - just saw photos on here. We would have dip in the pool had we known.
English spoken is adequate and with the exception of a surly young chap at the gym, most of the staff quite friendly. You need to wear a swimming cap in the pool and bring your own towel! Would probably return unless rich enough to move to Shangi la.
