Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent time in 3 different hotels in 3 Bolivian cities, and this hotel was one of the better ones. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you start looking at the details inside you'll see it's a pretty decent place. Funky curved hallways, a decent little 2nd floor bar and restaurant (awesome pizza!), and a glassed in atrium at the back of the hotel give this place a bit of a funky modern vibe. Neat pattern wood floors in all the common areas. Room wasn't as funky as the common areas, but was a decent size and the bed was comfortable. An older review complained of hair in the bed... perhaps he didn't notice the thick wool sheets they use above the white cotton sheets, these typically do shed the odd strand of hair.. nothing to worry about here in my opinion. Bathroom was all tile and glass, and there was good hot water pressure. Only small downside was a very mild odour out of bathroom floor drain (i just kept the floor towel over the drain, and voila!) and no free bottle of water in the room. Hotel is about 2 blocks from the city square and near a lot of shops and restaurants. Would definitely stay at Hotel Briggs again.

This would never be a 4 outside this context but when you compare it to other available options you will understand. You half a days drive away from La Paz well into the Alto Plano of Bolivia. You are surrounded by a rich diversity of Andean culture, many of the locals don't even speak Spanish. So if you compare your accommodations to first world standards it certainly struggles to attain a solid three.

But again considering the context they are a small oasis. From the outside it is a nice sleek tall building. This is helpful because every Wednesday and Saturday street turns into an all day open air market. It's part of the experience if your traveling to Oruro. And the only way to find your hotel is by looking up past the tapestry of tarps that cover each small market shop.

Although they advertise wifi it truly was awful. According to management is was because fiber optics are being installed at the present time.

Reading a prior review it was unfortunate to read that the service experience was poor. For me the service is the redeeming factor. In my case I discovered mold in my shower. I addressed with the front desk and after returning later that day it was remediated. The manager came out to apologize in person. A nice touch is that they have hot showers and good water pressure.

Breakfast being included is also a nice touch. It is simple but the person who runs the restaurant always remembered us and what we ordered. We had our coffee and water for hot tea served before we even asked.

While the hotel is not excellent, the staff more than makes up for its deficiency. And again when you realize the humble conditions that exists in the surrounding area this truly is an oasis.

It was nearly impossible to find a hotel for the Oruro festival. Luckily after much research I found this place. I had to book for 3 days and it was very expensive due to the carnival. I also had to send half by Western Union to reserve it. The rooms were on the small side but nicely decorated and clean. Breakfast was grand and the waitress there was really nice. The wife of the hotel manager, I think her name was Mariele, was super nice and helped us get the balcony of the Plaza Hotel to see the carnival. The Plaza hotel is a dump, but the terrace was the best place to see the carnival without getting paltered by water balloons. We also had the company of some really great Bolivian people that explained the dances and what was going on. We had the buffet lunch there the first day, but they had run out of food and we had to wait for them to make some more. The next day we brought some sandwiches. I didn’t see any other hotels there, but I doubt that there is a better place since this is a new business hotel that caters mainly to business people. Oh, be carful with the sun the air was cold and I was standing in what seemed a mild sun. I got so burned!

I was booked to spend one night in Oruro due to a university class I was teaching at the local university. The Briggs Hotel is touted to be among the best, if not "the" best hotel in Oruro so I was quite disgusted when I pulled back the covers to find a poorly made bed strewn with hairs. When I called reception they initially called me a liar and said sheets had been changed, then a bell boy came and agreed the bed had not been changed, but they refused to change them (due to no personnel at 10pm), refused to give me fresh sheets so I could make the bed myself or even give me another room (hotel was not booked solid). I changed to the Hotel Sucre, which doesn't look much better, but at least the sheets look washed.
