Located in the middle of the beautiful Laotian jungle in Luang Prabang, Shangri-Lao Classic Explorer Camp & Expeditions, invites you to re-live the adventures of Dr. P. Neis, an historic French explorer from the 19th century. Re-trace his footsteps along the very same tranquil streams and dense jungle in his original and authentic style whilst staying in luxury tents with breathtaking views just as he did in 1883. Sit atop the magnificent elephant as she slowly and peacefully takes you through the pristine jungle, though spectacular Teak forests and by local farms. With a choice to stay overnight in our stunning tents; you will wake up refreshed the next day with a new sense of being in the world. To rise early and see the morning mist slowly rise from the Namkhan River, then walk into the heart of the jungle to collect your elephant ready to bathe, is a truly unique experience & one that will last in your memory forever...

We booked this overnight trip with friends who really wanted the elephant experience. We were picked up early from our hotel in Luang Prabang and taken to the sanctuary. As we were staying overnight the day guests were introduced to the elephants first. We waited around for well over an hour before our experience started - this made me think we could have been picked up quite a bit later and relaxed a bit more over breakfast. Anyway, once we were introduced to the elephants we did have a good experience - I am not really sure how happy the elephants were to have people riding them all day as by the end of the day they looked pretty fed up to me! But then I am an experienced elephant expressions reader! The accomodations were rustic but pleasent - some very loud music started playing across the river very early in the morning so that woke us up early. The food was just above average. If I was to do tis again (and I don't think I would) I would not stay overnight

Shangri Lao in Elephant Village is a unique experience you should not miss if you travel to Luang Prabang. It lays in a wonderful environment at the banks of the Nam Khan river. We were welcome by two young elephants we were allowed to feed by banana. Amazing. The lodge itself is awesome. The rooms are really spacious and from your large bed you have a great view to the surrounding landscape. The food served in the restaurant was delicious. Finally, I have to say thank you to Lou Lou, the manager, who took perfectly care of us. The following day we participated in a half day “Elephant Experience”. We were able to ride on the head of an elephant that were well treated by their Mahouts (what I think should be one of the key arguments to go to Elephant Village) and visited the Tad Sae falls. This tour is a very valuable one.

We were staying in Luang Prabang. Our guide-for-the-day, Pon, picked us up at our hotel, and drove us the 45 minutes to this delightful resort. Elephants hang out -- not confined, not tethered. You can touch them -- and feed them bananas. Then you go across the river on a canoe to ride elephants (without a howdah! You just sit on their necks/shoulders and balance!). A fantastic lunch -- and then a canoe ride to a waterfall. Our guide was fantastic, and we learned more from him than from our 'official' city guide who was with us in Luang Prabang for two full days. The housing "independent cottages" looked great, and what a pleasant place to stay! Come enjoy the peaceful setting before the high speed trains and highways devastate this little piece of heaven!

Amazing experience. Great food. Really enjoyed watching the elephants wash every morning from our bungalow balcony! Our guide Tha was incredibly accommodating. Swimming pool was lovely. Went for a bareback elephant ride through the river! Which was great fun. Also got to wash the elephants which was a truly unique experience. I would warn people to come prepared with anything you need as no local shops. Alcohol and Food is provided. Also no WiFi available at the time of our stay. (FEB 2018) Definitely would recommend to people truly unique experience.

My family and I had a good time at Shangri-Lao. Mack our guide was helpful, kind and good at what he does. He was very knowledgeable and spoke great English. Our luxurious tent was wonderful despite it being a little warm inside. Please take note there is no WiFi in the rooms; it is only available in the restaurant. But, this for me was not a major problem. Also, the view from the tent is quite lovely. I had a blast giving my elephant a washing in a river.
