With its prestigious location, just steps from the UNESCO Old City of Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior is ready to show its revamped grandeur as one of the most lavish hotels on the Adriatic. Housed in a former 1913 royal villa and built to take full advantage of a west-facing view of the glorious Old Town, Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik enjoys the most enviable location of any hotel in the city – just a five-minute walk from the medieval fortress walls. It has been welcoming famous guests from the start, including Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor. It’s only when you go there that you fully appreciate the magnificence of the setting: the tranquil gardens in which to stroll, a beautiful beach and three restaurants, all offering cinematic views of the Adriatic. For added luxury, there is also an indoor swimming pool, plus a glamorous spa and fitness centre.

We have recently returned from a 10-night stay at the Excelsior, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience having enjoyed our first stay there in July 2024.

This time we booked directly with the hotel, arranging flights separately, and the hotel arranged transfers for us from and to the airport which were excellent.

We booked a Villa Odak Deluxe sea view balcony room, which was in the original 1913 Villa Odak part of the hotel, and our room on the top floor had magnificent views of the Adriatic, Lokrum Island and Dubrovnik Old Town. The room, although not large, was stylish and comfortable with a good sized marble clad bathroom with a bath and separate large shower, and with a balcony from which we enjoyed watching the sun set over Dubrovnik Old Town.

Our rate included breakfast which was very good with a wide range of hot and cold food, and with seating both indoors or on the terrace with great views. We particularly enjoyed the Abakus Piano Bar which had a wonderful comfortably furnished terrace, again with magnificent views toward Lokrum Island and Dubrovnik Old Town, and which served a great choice of drinks and casual food. We did intend to dine in the Prora Beach Restaurant, but during our stay it was closed in the evenings due to weather and sea conditions.

The hotel has a large indoor pool, with jacuzzis and saunas, and a sea level terrace from which you can relax in the sun or jump directly into the warm (in September) Adriatic Sea.

What we really appreciated was the warmth and helpfulness of all of the staff we encountered, who really made us feel valued as guests. In particular, Ivo and his Front Office staff were very helpful throughout our stay, as was the Concierge Rafaela who arranged restaurant reservations for us and gave us a lot advice about what to see and do in the Dubrovnik area. Special mention to Ivan, Katia and Zeliko in the Abakus Bar who provided a really great and friendly service, as did Pavo and Tibor on the sea level terrace and our maid Ana, who was always very friendly and attentive and ensured that our room was made up whilst we were having breakfast.

Overall the Excelsior provides a wonderful base for an enjoyable stay in Dubrovnik and we certainly intend to visit again in the future.

It sounds like you had a fantastic view of the Adriatic and Dubrovnik Old Town from your room! Excellent location and hotel. The guest areas were clean and well kept. The room, whilst we only had a Classic Room, was very comfortable with a large bathroom with bath and separate shower. We enjoyed the breakfast service and the staff attention and even meeting the hotel manager who welcomed us to the hotel one morning. The outside deck in to the sea is a wonderful place to spend a morning/afternoon and there is no shortage of loungers. Slight issue with the parasols as they tend to blow over when the wind gets up - and perhaps a more permanent solution is needed (concrete some in to the ground?) The service on the deck is good and they bring drinks from the bar which is nice, although they are expensive which was the one downside for us sadly but we just bought a few soft drinks from the local supermarket to help soften the blow. The piano bar is nice to sit in to get away from the heat and also a nice place to come after an evening wandering around the old town - which is close by.

We booked this hotel, through Jet2 Indulgent Escapes, at short notice after our planned holiday to Madeira was cancelled.

This was our first visit to Croatia, and we are so pleased that we chose Dubrovnik and the Hotel Excelsior for our holiday.

The hotel is perfectly located on the edge of the Adriatic and only a 10-minute walk to the Ploče Gate entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik.

The hotel consists of the original Villa Odak building dating back to 1913, and the adjoining Tower that was more recently constructed.

Our room was on the third floor of the Villa Odak building and had magnificent sea views to the Island of Lokrum and to the walled Old Town of Dubrovnik. The room, whilst not large, was tastefully and comfortably furnished and well equipped, with a furnished balcony with magnificent sea views. The marble clad bathroom had a bath and a large separate shower, with good quality toiletries and thick fluffy towels.

The hotel facilities are truly excellent, including the Sensus Restaurant (Fine Dining), the Prora Beach Restaurant and the Salin breakfast restaurant, together with the Akakus Piano Bar. We enjoyed a wonderful evening meal at the Prora Restaurant with a table on the sea terrace overlooking the Old Town. The piano bar had an outside terrace overlooking Lokrum Island the Old Town, and served a good selection of casual food which we thoroughly enjoyed. Breakfast on the terrace of the Salin Restaurant was really good, with an extensive selection of cold dishes and hot dishes cooked to order.

There was an excellent and large indoor swimming pool with adjoining sauna and steam room, and a sea level terrace with comfortable sun beds and direct access to the sea. Staff at the sea terrace were very attentive in helping to set up the sun beds and umbrellas, and serving a great selection of drinks and food.

What made this hotel really special were the friendly and attentive staff throughout the hotel whose aim was to make guests feel special and valued. Everyone we encountered had a warm smile and were ready to help in any way they could, and it was good to see the hotel manager taking time to greet and chat with guests at breakfast. Reception staff were also very helpful with advice about the hotel and the local area.

We can't recommend the Hotel Excelsior highly enough, and plan to return next year for a longer stay.

Love love LOVED this hotel. Easily in my top 5 hotel stays of all time. The service is impeccable (at least two room services each day, and we never had to wait more than 2-3 minutes for a request). The complimentary breakfasts are lavish. Interiors are stylish and contemporary. The spa area downstairs is unbelievable -- we wiled away hours in the spa, moving between the sauna, steam room, and massive pool. The beach deck is so nice. I loved being able to take a dip in the ocean and come back up onto the deck without having to deal with sand. It made the ocean feel like a big swimming pool. Literally the *only* thing that needs improvement is the coffee situation. It would be nice to have something other than instant coffee in the rooms, but maybe instant coffee is the norm in Croatia (I'm not sure). That being said, they will make you a nice cappuccino at breakfast area. My wife and I will fondly remember Hotel Excelsior and will definitely be staying here again if we return to Dubrovnik.

Beautiful hotel with a very unassuming entrance. The lobby is pretty small and doesn’t scream luxury. However, the floor to ceiling windows give wonderful views of the Adriatic Sea and the Old Town. We booked a classic room 4x nights approx and got ‘a deal’ at £1600. The room was disappointing, very generic Hilton-esque facing a brick wall. It did not matter whether the curtains were open or not. Whilst the bathroom and bedroom was spacious, there were no luxury touches that made me feel I was at an Excelsior.
What you are paying for are the views of the UNESCO Old Town and the short walking distance to the famous walls. Breakfast was amazing and the sun beds facing the water were lovely. However, be aware despite being there in July there were a couple of days were it was windy and the water comes crashing around the sun loungers so you need to hold onto your belongings,
Service was little patchy and inconsistent but nothing to warrant a complaint. They would forgot topping up the amenities in the room so we constantly felt we were on the phone requesting the little things.
The beach is adjacent to the hotel, I don’t believe it’s part of the hotel, I could be wrong. I think the beds there would be charged. But it was a lovely stretch of golden sand and clear blue water.
Overall a great stay, you’re paying for the location and the views.

What an excellent stay! Hotel is fabulously appointed on a cliff side overseeing the Adriatic and with the old city is just 15 mins on foot.

We had a lovely suite with a balcony and enjoyed three days of glorius sunsets.

The piece de resistance must be the sun plaza on the waters. Languid afternoons with the Adriatic lapping at your feet. Can’t get any better.

We had dinner at the outdoor restaurant Sensus which had a lovely menu and wine selection.

We also had a light dinner one evening at Salin the outdoor terrace with good cocktails and light bites.

Service in the hotel was tip top. Star employee is the blonde/ginger pool guy who was just about the most hardworking person carrying deck chairs and parasols throughout the day. He also took trouble to adjust our parasols when the sun changes direction. He also takes care of the indoor pool and sauna. That’s truly over and above.

Can’t wait till our next trip!

We didn't feel we were checking into a 5 star hotel. Reception, welcome, corridors and general feel of the hotel was not great at all. Then when we saw the room we instantly felt depressed and uncomfortable. The room was tiny, it was dusty, the air con didn't function properly, the shower head was blocked and so didn't flow properly, the mini bar had a partially drank bottle of water in it and items missing, there was also a huge black mirrored floor to ceiling pillar at the side of the bed which obstructed the view and made the room feel very dark.
The outside sun terrace was poor. Service was poor. No complimentary water, broken parasols, tables never wiped, steps to sea and outdoor pool were covered in green slime and very dangerous. Only 1 day out of 4 did we have one staff member come round on a few occasions to ask if we needed anything, otherwise we had to chase the staff to be served.
The ladies bathroom next to the sun terrace was awful. Wet towels, tissue and loo roll all over the floor. Someone had vomited in the loo and it smelt awful and even if after all that, I still wanted to use the bathroom, there was no loo roll. On our way to our first breakfast, it looked like someone had vomited on the carpeted stairs. I reported this to a staff member at breakfast and also to Marko (manager) during our conversation the next day but 3 days later when we left, the staircase still hadn't been cleaned. In general, breakfast was done on the cheap. Everything was basic and poor quality and not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
On a positive note, breakfast service was quick and friendly, sun terrace food was good, complimentary dinner from Marko was excellent, our upgraded room was lovely and had great views. Any calls we made from our room for ice or ironing etc were dealt with extremely efficiently. If it wasn't for Marko stepping in then it would have been awful.

Dear Mrs.simonepV2563IL, I would like to thank you for staying at our Hotel Excelsior during your recent visit to Dubrovnik. We want you to know, we take these comments as very valuable feedback and would like to thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. I would like to apologize one more time for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay, and I feel very sad that you expressed your dissatisfaction with many aspects of the Hotel. Not wanting to diminish your experience or your comments in any way I would like to point out that the room that was booked was a Superior partial sea view room which was given upon checking in. The pillar in the room you mentioned is a support pillar that cannot be moved or removed, and we wish for your understanding regarding the layout of the room. We thank you for appreciating the room upgrade we gave you after the first night and we hope you enjoyed the deluxe suite for the rest of your stay. Regarding the service on the sun deck, we would like you to know we are looking into the problem and are working on improving the service, so it is equally deserving of 5 stars as our other areas. We truly must apologize and admit an omission on our part that happened in the woman’s bathroom by the beach. Our response should have been immediate and we admit the error should never have happened. Furthermore, we are saddened by your dissatisfaction with our breakfast options. Every week we try to bring in new options for breakfast and we strive to serve only the freshest ingredients. With such a wide array of options on, both our buffet and a la carte menu we were in the belief there must be something that would suit even the pickiest of eaters. Once again, we would like you to realize how much we value your feedback. We thank you for your kind words regarding the breakfast service, upgraded suite, the complimentary dinner at our a la carte restaurant and efficient service, and we hope these minor inconveniences did not heavily affect your honeymoon. We hope to have you again and we wish you a lot of happiness in your life together. Kind regards, Ivor Vlasic Hotel Director,

We had an exceptional stay at this modern hotel, equipped with all the facilities one could desire. Vesna and Marko ensured our comfort and satisfaction throughout our visit. We were delighted to be upgraded to the Presidential Suite and also secured an additional room for our children. The hotel's ambiance is both welcoming and impeccably clean, with a highly professional staff at every turn – from the bellboy and concierge to the spa masseuses and pool attendants.
The cliffside and beach area are breathtaking, featuring ladders for easy access to the water and a jumping wall for some added excitement. Our room was outstanding, boasting large TVs, an incredibly comfortable mattress, and a strong, invigorating shower.
Breakfast at the hotel is truly five-star quality, offering a wide array of delicious options. We look forward to returning in the future.

I would honestly recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a great location, very close to old town, extremely clean (always a priority for me) and exceptional staff, i found Paula and Marco particularly helpful and pleasant, views weren’t bad either. 😉All staff no matter which department couldn’t do enough to accommodate our every need, they were all very pleasant and helpful and it wasn’t forced. We felt the staff were extremely attentive and knew when to step back and leave us to it, for instance during our lovely and leisurely breakfast staff would discreetly remove our used plates when we weren’t at the table and also we didn't feel rushed.
We had a really lovely stay at the Excelsior with it’s calm ambiance and wonderful staff and I’ll certainly return. I was a little concerned about booking at first because i was worried about the walk to and from the old town due to a back issue I have but I needn’t have worried because it was more than doable.
The only small suggestions I would have are the toiletries could have been a bit more luxurious and possibly have a shuttle to drop off at different locations.

This hotel was perfect. It’s a 10 minute, straight shot walk into old town. The hotel staff was super friendly & helpful. We had a partial sea view room & the view was incredible. We had a king bed & it was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was delicious & plentiful & the view was breathtaking from the restaurant. Our mornings couldn’t have started off any better. We laid by the water in the mornings & read before starting our days & while there isn’t access to a beach right from the hotel, there is a private section of lounge chairs and ladders into the water. If you want to sit on the “beach,” which is just rocks, no sand, it’s a short walk next door. We preferred being away from the hustle & bustle & appreciated the privacy of our hotel’s space. Outside of breakfast at the hotel restaurant every morning, we had dinner at the Prora Restaurant which is their more casual restaurant. While casual because it’s literally tables set up by the water, it’s still expensive & since it’s set up by the water- if you have early reservations when the sun is still up… there are people in their bathing suits walking around and people smoking… wasn’t our favorite & I would suggest one of their other restaurants for dinner or wait until the sun is fully down & people are out of the water. Overall, this hotel was a lovely experience & we would definitely stay here again!

What is a twin tower room. Does it have a sea view?

If it’s the larger high-rise, then I guess that would be the twin tower. Some rooms potentially look out at the street rather than the sea. I would confirm that with the hotel. We had a great stay there.
