Like nothing else on Earth: Perched on the sea cliff on the far, uninhabited side of one of Australia's most remote and fascinating islands is hidden a jaw-dropping new eco-lodge. Featuring a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall glass front opening to an expansive deck that gazes out to sunset over the ocean where seabirds soar past at eye-level, a luxurious Italian-tiled ensuite bathroom and hot shower with a view into the jungle greenery, king size bed, stone bench tops, glass sculptures, canvas-side walls with expansive zip-down meshed windows, ceiling fan and more... Every piece of this remarkable, solar-powered wilderness escape has been carefully carried in and assembled by hand in the middle of one of Australia’s most amazing National Parks. Swell Lodge has been awarded Ecotourism Australia's highest level of certification 'Advanced Ecotourism' as well as a 'Climate Action Business' reserved for exemplary operators for our ecological sustainability, natural area management and provision of authentic experiences, which, together with our included carbon-offset program allows you to fall sleep to the peaceful sound of the swell, completely guilt-free.

Don't know where to start..this lodge is magnificent. Its location is truly on the stupendous scale of impossible perched on the edge of a sea cliff overlooking the western part of the island. You gave one lodge next to you and then no one for about 15km...The sense of isolation and peace in a tropical paradise awaits you. Some things to note: its an eco lodge so there is solar power good enough for most things but no air con...you don't need it..its cooler than Perth and the breeze coming thru with the ceiling fan is enough to get you into island life. Compost toilets and rain water showers gives you the basic necessities without ruining the surrounding national park.Wifi is brilliant and fast. Think glam camping but permanent with tiled bathrooms ,sliding doors and zip down windows not to mention the magic balcony I call the flight deck as its the place to see all the Seabirds namely boobies and frigates fly right past at eye level or even feed their chick's right under you. .The view of Egaria Point is breathtaking..This is the place to have a 3 course meal prepared by an incredible chef of great prowess Francois Morabito.Yes the French accent will dazzle you but more to the point his ability to forage the island for fruits, vegetables and fish to prepare your meals and lunches never ceases to amaze us.It was a culinary journey to behold from Asian flavours to Malay to Japanese to island treats it all was magical. No drawbacks but be prepared it is the national park so wildlife is everywhere including mosquitoes, lots of red crabs and others, the crashing sound of surf outside your balcony sends you to sleep very easily.. The activities laid on by Jess and Chris are amazing. In 7 days you will see the entire island from snorkel trips to hikes through the Dale's to pools and waterfalls, treks into caves such as Daniel Roux complete with caving gear(only available thru Swell Lodge), birding advice and locations, beaches, crab migration highlights including the best spawning location on the island , blowholes , cultural festivities on at the time like Chinese temple parties, visits to museums and shopping highlights... visitors to national Park centres such as bird rehabilitation and reptile conservation and even astronomy advice...Seeing the Geminids meteor shower and the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn were truly amazing from the flight deck..Just some of what is on offer on the island or you can just chill in the atmosphere....its pretty surreal....

A whole week of luxury with everything provided from fantastic accommodation and food ( made each day by our wonderful Chef Francois ) to drinks with a view. Jess our guide drove us all over the island where we had picnics in some great spots, snorkelled in the Cove, swam in the Grotto and had a lovely boat trip with Dan to snorkel again and feed the giant Trevelly. Combine with a week on the Cocos and you can't go wrong.

This is a comprehensive experience where your hosts think of everything. Imagine beautifully prepared picnic lunches and a bottle of wine on a secluded beach, walks twisting and turning through the jungle with something new to see around every corner, and at the end of it all, a luxury room with only the roar of the sea, the birds and the stars as your neighbours. If you like a generic hotel room and McDonald’s in the middle of a city miss this place. For everyone else it is a gem well worth experiencing.

A few special occasions to celebrate found us lucky enough to stay at Swell Lodge. What a special place. The location (in the National Park) is fantastic- secluded and immersed in the forest but perched on the coast. The eco tent was unique for us, having never stayed in one before. It was really comfortable and really well appointed. The bed was super comfortable with great linen and perfectly positioned to take in the ocean views. Actually the entire set up was really well thought out to maximise space and aesthetic. Good bathroom with hot water and eco products. Meals were 10/10. Lots of variety of delicious, healthy and locally flavoured foods. Francois, the chef and all round great guy, is such a gem. We enjoyed both his food ethos and his company. The activity schedule was also 10/10- we had great days on the water, on the land and at the lodge. A good mix of down time and active time. Jess was super, organising everything as well as individualising a program for us. We were fortunate to coincide with the red crab migration for our last few days which was really the icing on the cake. Swell is a unique place and encompasses so much more than just a place to sleep- it's a total experience. It has stimulated our appetite to spend more time on Christmas Island. Thanks to all. What a delight.
