Taking off on a Saturday night in LA and arriving on a Monday morning in Nadi the capital of Fiji, mysteriously losing a day in our lives. Nadi Airport is located on Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest and main island. It is 5 o clock in the morning when we touch down and when we leave the passport check point at the airport customs area. Fiji is our 3 day stopover on our way to New Zealand. So all we had to do now is arrange our accommodation on Fiji. Not particularly problematic as I had already found an obscure webpage mentioning the interesting Cocomo Beach bungalows located at a blue lagoon bay.

3 espressos later we have made a 3 night bungalow reservation on Beach Cocomo. Lati our local liaison made the calls and makes the reservation, She leads the way and never leaves our side until 3 hours later we’re safely on a public bus, giving the bus driver clear directions where to drop us off. A few dollars and another 3 hours later we arrive at Beach Cocomo. (Of course 80 dollars for a taxi would have taken us just 1 hour travel time.) Nothing beats local transport to get a feeling for the country and we’ve easily adjusted to famous 'Fiji Time'. Something very familiar and similar to the phenomenon known as 'Jam Karet' (Rubber Time). As our host Isao explains on Fiji you don’t really need a watch as you can tell time by looking at the sun moving from east to west. Of course you have to give and take half an hour.

Beach Cocomo is a very small boutique resort just off Sigatoka town with only 2 bungalows for guests, while the other 2 bungalows are occupied by the owners and caretakers. Very intimate and flexible and the perfect ocean front accommodation for newly weds. The caretakers Oka and Sammy are Fijian. The hosts however are Japanese and Korean. Isao San is a surfer that settled down on the island 18 years ago, his Korean girlfriend Mary joined him a mere 8 years ago. When Isao first arrived for a one year contract he soon decided that this might very well be a good spot for a surfing nomad to settle. Far away from hectic Japan and close to sun, sea and surf. Isao an old Bali wave surfer loves chatting with me in Indonesian and is delighted to smoke kretek (clove siggies) again.

Excellent hosts, nice food, a basic bungalow just off the beach, a beautiful black bay and a lush green thumb garden. And with the enchanting star lit night sky, who needs television and internet? We enjoyed 3 excellent nights here.

Little did we know, but there were actually 3 of us already staying at the Cocomo Beach bungalow.

As other reviews have stated, this place really makes you feel welcome -- Fiji style.

There are many thoughtful touches in the property -- for one thing, they are the only property I stayed at in Fiji that had a rack outside to dry swimwear on. It astounds me that everyone doesn't do this, given that a primary reason to go to Fiji is to get wet!

They also provide beach towels to use on the beach (which is basically almost all to yourself -- another plus). The decor feels authentic -- the whole vibe is very much one of staying with friends. There is even a stray cat that will charm you completely.

The beach was fun to explore and the water was very pleasant to relax in. The comfy furnishings on the deck and the beautiful landscaping made that space "fiji time" worthy, too..

Only one small note: If you are sound-sensitive, bring earplugs in case of road noise. (With a sound wall, some air conditioning, and a "fancier" bathroom, this place could easily triple the price it is charging -- but then again, that would also change the feel of the place)

Also, you must treat yourself to the amazing dinner (which could easily cost upward of $200 in a US city, or be worth one of those Yountville-style journeys). My meal was served in a beautiful sandy outdoor area by the beach (the need for bug spray was well worth the setting)

The food was freshly prepared, wonderfully presented, with unique and delicious combinations worthy of a Michelin star! Marie also explains each dish as she presents them. The best food I had in Fiji -- and in the top 5 of food I have *ever* had anywhere.

In short: it is very much worth staying here for a night to experience the dinner and the hospitality -- you will feel like a Fijian in no time!

While we appreciated the attempt at providing original cuisine and local flavor, the result was often underwhelming and over-priced. Despite the lack of privacy, attempts at soliciting advice for surfing and snorkeling were met with negativity and lack of flexibility. The first night that I did not join them for dinner, I returned to the hotel to find it dark and locked. I found that my level of service was dependent upon my willingness to let them define my every meal and activity. Beach Cocomo has many qualities that could endorse its unique take on Fijian cuisine and accommodations. However, the service often appeared to be centered more around them than their guests.

Beach Cocomo is on a small strip of land in between the coral coast and the main road running from the airport to Suva. It has its own reef on the beachfront, good for beachcombing not swimming, but beautiful nonetheless.
We stayed in the larger of the 2 cabins in late November. The rooms were fitted out to a lovely standard, the bed was huge and comfy and we had tons of space to relax. Its definitely out in the sticks, but accessible by taxi or the local bus to Sigatoka.
The place is very relaxing, but there are things to do, either day-tripping around the area, snorkeling on the reef or surf lessons with Isao - who is known as a local legend and has contributed to much to the local Fijian surf community. Our time spent learning to surf at Natandola beach with him were some major highlights to our trip and we have taken his advice to heart!!
Marie's cooking is outstanding and we ate at Cocomo every night - we liked being surprised each day with the Korean / Japanese / Fijian fusion food, though I am sure she could accommodate requests if we'd had a preference. Additionally the staff were super helpful and we felt well taken care of.
We cannot recommend the place more highly enough if you're looking for a simple, relaxing and beautiful break. We will be back!! Just note, we had some amazing sleep quality while we were there but if you hated road noises, you could be disturbed by the road behind the plot when trucks drive past.

I chose Beach Cocomo based on reviews here, specifically because of the ravings about the food, and they were so true! Marie does Fijian/Asian fusion perfectly and all dishes were so flavorful and unique. We ate every meal here, but one, and we cleaned our plates every time. It was so relaxing to be able to choose the time we'd want to eat, and just let her know, and it was "no problem".
Their advice on hitching rides into town really saved us time and money, and was part of the real Fijian experience that we had hoped to enjoy. One afternoon Isao saw us shopping at the market, and offered us a ride back when he was finished with the grocery shopping - so nice and accommodating.
Our bure was very spacious, and it was especially nice to have the mini-frig. and electric tea kettle for snacks and coffee.
A comment that I don't remember noticing about the location, before we came, is that the back of the bures is very close to the road, and you definitely hear road noise, as all windows are open for the great breezes. This did not bother us, as the frequency of car passage after dark really declined, but for light sleepers, this is something to note.
This was a fantastic, laid back "antidote" for us to unwind after 10 days on the Nai'a, scuba diving, and to experience true "small town" Fiji. All the people we met were genuinely warm and caring. I can't forget to mention that the cleanliness of our room was fantastic! Marie and staff were so sweet to allow us to stay into the afternoon on our last day, as it rained all day, and we didn't have to leave for the airport until 4 pm.

We arrived to Cocomo after one week in a big resort on the island which was like any other resort in any other country. Once we arrived We felt immediately like home sweet home. And we stayed there for 18 nights. Both Mary and Isao welcomed us with a big hug. The place is magical with beautiful and unique energy. The food that Mary cooked for us was soooo good and with so much love. We had a surprise every dinner and both us and the kids admire Mary and her food. Isao, a soul surfer guided us and helped us to better understand where to surf in Fiji and how. He took us and the kids to hideaway break and Natandola beach and the kids ride the best waves ever. The Cocomo is located 8 minutes drive from the great Sigatoka town, where you can explore the market and get around the amazing Fiji people. It was a one time in life experience that we all will never forget. We left with great memories and new Very good friends. Thank you Mary...thank you Isao...we love you. Alon and Yael

My partner and I recently spent 3 weeks in Fiji island hopping and staying mostly in 5 star accommodation. He spent most of his time scuba diving and I indulged in the spa services on offer. I have never provided any comments on tripadvisor and have travelled through Africa, Asia (mostly Sth East Asia) and parts of Europe over the years. We chose Beach Cocomo as our final destination for the last week of our holiday on the basis of its excellent reviews, and feel compelled to provide comment on our stay as we were not disappointed with our decision. From the moment we arrived until we left, Marie (Madee) and Isao made us feel as though we had come home, including their support team Ako &Rina. They are great hosts, and Madee, is an exquisite cook. The fijian, Korean and Japanese fusion was delicious. The presentation of all meals including the beautiful crockery did not go unnoticed. Every meal was enjoyed sitting in the traditional style hut/ restaurant/kitchen whilst overlooking the ocean
Wishbone is an interesting dog with his own peculiarities , his 180 degree u-turn whilst in full flight chasing cars, is a sight to behold. you never knew whether you were taking him for a walk along the beach, or he was taking you.. Either way our daily walks along the beach were enjoyable. Thank you for making our last week in Fiji so memorable everyone......We are going to try and come back to your relaxing, home hopefully in 2015. Caron & John.

My fiancee and I spent a few nights at Beach Cocomo on the recommendation of a friend. The reviews are true...Isao and Marie are lovely hosts and super friendly and interesting. We were sad we didn't have a chance to take one of Isao's famous surfing lessons. We ate dinner at Cocomo twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Marie is a great cook. The water pressure and warm water are excellent, and the room was clean and cozy. We did have an issue with bugs (hundreds of tiny little flies) that swarmed around our bed at night and died on the comforter...this was not pleasant at all but I guess there's nothing they could do about it. Also, DO NOT have your laundry done there. I received the bill for my 2 kg of laundry that I thought would be $15 Fijian max...and the bill was $97!!! I was shocked and appalled. They really should have told me the price beforehand but that's absurd.

We stayed at Beach Cocomo for seven days in July 2013. It is a small comfortable and very relaxing place. The owners Isao and Marie are nice and friendly. They did everything they could to make us feel welcome and make our stay even more enjoyable. I would certainly recommend Beach Cocomo for a nice and relaxing stay in Viti Levu. People looking for accommodation in Fiji are probably interested in location, beach, activities, facilities and food. Here is a few comments on each topic.

Location. Beach Cocomo is about 15-20 min drive from Sigatoka in the direction of Suva and a few minutes drive from the large Outrigger resort. There are a couple of resorts within a walking distance, but none too close, leaving the whole beach to you and the guests at the other bure. It is on the main road, buses dropped us off right at the doorstep. you will hear some of the road noise, but it did not bother us, as it was blended with the sound of the ocean.
The beach is nice and clean, with plenty of magnificent shells. It is south facing, which means that you can always find a shady spot if you want one. It is washed regularly by high tides and feels pristine in the mornings. There is good snorkeling, probably as good as it gets by Viti Levu standards, but don't expect endless coral gardens. I don't think you'll find them anywhere in Viti Levu. Having said that, we found plenty to look at while snorkeling right in front of our bure. Beautiful patches of coral, lots of small and medium fish. We saw many moray eels , octopus, puffer fish, stingrays, all sorts of crabs and mollusks in huge shells, big clams, anemones, and lots more. There was enough for us to explore for seven days and we could use more :-). There was some really beautiful soft and hard coral too. If you are not much into snorkeling, about 20 meters to the left of the restaurant is a nice sandy patch to swim and relax. Even more traditional sandy beach is a couple of hundred meters to the East (black sand).
We found plenty to do there: mainly exploring the beach, walking to the reef at low tide, relaxing on the porch with a book and playing with Wishbone (a very friendly and incredibly smart dog who seemed to adopt us and look after us). At low tide, you can take very long walks either way on the beach, at high tide you may get wet or need to climb up to the road. We are not surfers, but if you are, Isao is a great resource as a trainer and guide. You can take a trip to a waterfall and some other tours, but we were very content without them.
The facilities are basic, but comfortable. Both bures are built on a sandstone outcrop and surrounded by very well maintained garden, creating nice ocean views through the greenery. Bed linen and towels are sparkling fresh, the room is meticulously cleaned every day. Water is sourced from a mountain spring, and as such the pressure is just adequate. There is a small fridge. Blissfully, no TV, no swimming pool. I really agree with Brendan's review in that regard.
Last, but most certainly not least, the food. It is truly well prepared, creative, healthful and very fresh fusion of Fijian, Japanese, Korean and other asian dishes, cooked especially for you with a true desire to please. We did have one a meal at the sunset strip, but did not repeat this mistake afterwards. Marie's food was so much better and certainly a great value.
We loved the place and would definitely recommend it to people who look for a simple quiet and relaxing experience.
Thank you very much, Marie, Isao, Ako, Semi, Mary and of course Wishbone!
