Explora's model of service and hospitality goes above and beyond. Their location is Sacred Valley is breathtaking and can only truly be appreciated in person. We have traveled all over the world, and this was truly a trip of a lifetime. Explora has cultivated the client experience to not only meet expectations but go beyond. Their service not only ensures guests feel welcome, but that shared values of sustainability and cultural appreciation are respected. Our guide, Victor, also went above and beyond. He was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also patient throughout our hike as he helped us navigate physical challenges but also peppered him with dozens of questions. Even when Victor thought no one was looking, we noticed his attention to detail as he stopped to pick up litter on the trail or even pet a dog. His pride and love for Peru was infectious! Thank you for a great trip!

We (my adult daughter and I) stayed at Explora for six nights and would highly recommend it for people wanting a more in depth exploration of the Sacred Valley away from the crowds of the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

We chose Explora having previously stayed at their Torres del Paine property (which we thoroughly enjoyed). So, we were already familiar with the Explora concept and like it.

The property is located about an hour and half from the Cuzco airport in the Sacred Valley. It’s at the very end of a long dirt road that passes one other resort property and a very small town (Uruquillos).

The property is architecturally stunning both outside and within. The rooms are well appointed with a soaking tub and walk in shower and have nice views of the valley and the mountains.

The food and drink service was excellent and they did a great job of accommodating our vegan dietary requirements. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and also offered many great vegan options.

We did five explorations while we were there: Maras Plateau, La Veronica, Cuzco, Huchuy Qosqo and Machu Picchu.

The explorations were all very good. Of the hikes (i.e., Maras Plateau, La Veronica and Huchy Qosqo), we enjoyed Huchy Qosqo the best. It was the most challenging, but it offered the best views and archaeological site (other than Machu Picchu). We didn’t do any of the mountain biking but saw some videos that other guests shared with us and it looked very cool.

In retrospect, if I had it to do again, I would have booked separate accommodations in Cusco and at Machu Picchu to visit those places. Visiting Cusco during the day was nice, but I think we would have had a more fulsome experience had we actually stayed there for a couple of nights. As for Machu Picchu, it’s not included in the Explora all-inclusive cost, so you have to pay extra for that even if you do that through Explora. I had not appreciated how much travel time is required to get to Machu Picchu. Between the ride to the train station from Explora, the train ride and the bus ride at the end, it’s at least 4 hours each way. If you instead stayed in Agua Calientes (or if you really want to splurge, at the Belmond property at the entrance to Machu Picchu), you could visit Machu Picchu early (before all the crowds arrive by train) and break up the travel.

That would have given us more time to enjoy the hikes and bike riding that Explora had to offer in the Sacred Valley itself, which I think is their unique offering.

From the minute you check in you feel so taken care of. Not gaudy but lovely, and personally cared for. I am 72 and the daily explorations, hikes, bike trips and van trips to cultural locations were wonderfully executed. The staff was sure that you were safe and not taking trips you were not trained for. It was a stretch but so worth the experience, the views and the history. Coming back every day to the simply, elegantly designed hotel was a treat. There is a spa not to miss in an old colonial home, charming bar tenders with fun drinks, fabulous healthy meals all day. Everything except the spa is included. Not cheap but an amazing luxury adventure. Thanks to everyone.

This is the third Explora property I’ve visited, having previously been to the Atacama and Patagonia properties in Chile. Each location is special in its own ways, but the Sacred Valley Explora has been my favorite for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the guides are outstanding. Desiree and Julio really helped us take in the culture and the history to a place with such a rich legacy of both. Every single exploration was special, with stunning views that are difficult to capture in pictures. Additionally, the food was fresh and deliciously prepared. I always found something suitable and delicious to eat which wasn’t as easy in the other properties. Moreover, the drinks were to die for. Your life will change after having the pisco sour made with passion fruit (maracuya) and spicy chili. But to me, what made Explora Sacred Valley the most special property was that every reasonable request was met with an earnest desire to get to “Yes.” Every single team member was friendly and accommodating, which made it feel like you were staying with friends and not at a hotel. This is a well-managed property with a team who genuinely seem to love their jobs and making your trip a memorable one. I personally can’t wait to come back!

Hi Dio9mm, Thanks for sharing your experience with us; we’re very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our lodge in the Sacred Valley. Our guides train at our Guide School to become experts in the territory and in that way give our travelers a profound experience and connection with the place. In addition, our team at the lodge makes every effort for all travelers to feel at home. The dining menu was designed by the Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez, owner of “Central”, the fourth best restaurant in the world according to the ranking The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021, whose recipes aim for excellence and vindicate local culture by using Andean ingredients. We hope to see you at one of our other destinations soon, so you can have the Explora experience again. A warm embrace, Explora Team.

Spent 5 days at Explora. It caters to those who understand luxury, service and appreciate fine food. Every detail is well thought out. Guides are masters of their craft. Having hiked all over the world - NZ, Svalbard, Africa, Patagonia, US, Canada, Australia, Iceland, I know good when I experience it. Vider, the first guide, designed all the expeditions and you can chose what caters to your comfort level. After you come back from your expedition you are immersed in subtle luxuries of the Explora(don’t want to call it a hotel, because it would be inappropriate). Comfortable beds, well-designed rooms, staff that caters to your every desire and makes sure that your experience is unique. Food is some of the best I’ve had in the world. Everything is local, organic and drawn up by the top chef in the country. Michelin rated restaurants that I frequent take a back seat to Explora’s cuisine. Stay here, if you can. I now regret not staying at Explora in Atacama and Patagonia. Will not make that mistake again when visiting Easter Island or Bolivia. I wish there was an Explora on every continent…

Machu Picchu has been high on our travel wish list for some time. We looked at several US based active travel companies as possibilities. The travel companies all tend to price their travel by person. When we calculated the Explora price per person we realized we could save money and not have to move from hotel to hotel. Explora exceeded our expectations.

The Explora price includes: transportation from and to the airport, all meals with a special menu designed by Virgilio Martinez, all drinks except for a few high-end wines, daily explorations with knowledgeable Peruvian guides, and all entrance fees. Their location is near Urubamba which is in the center of the Sacred Valley. Each evening you meet with the guides and select an exploration that fits your interest. Usually, guests zero in on a day for their Machu Picchu visit well in advance so Explora can purchase all of the required tickets and arrange the guide. We traveled at the front end of the rainy season so most of our explorations ended up being private.

We found the lodge to be stunningly beautiful. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable, and modern. Every room has a lovely view of the valley. The outstanding customer service begins with a manager greeting you at the van whisking your luggage to your room so that you can go on a leisurely tour of the property. Along the way she introduces you to various members of the staff. You pause for a little tea, sign a couple of papers, and you are off to your room.

When we booked the trip we thought we were checking Machu Picchu off of our list. Somehow I expect we might return to Explora Sacred Valley.

Everyone if you are planning to #MachuPichu and you are somewhat fancy I highly recommend you stay @exploravallesagrado It’s lower in altitude than Cusco and it was so easy. They picked us up at the airport and took us on a twisty 2 hour ride to the valley where we could acclimate and also took us on all the tours that we wanted to go on depending on our energy and interest. It was an amazing experience. The staff were so professional and lovely. It’s not a bargain necessarily, but they take care of everything and it is true luxury and worth THE $$$ IMO. We went in off season and it was 25% off and we had the entire place to ourselves and the weather most days was like Napa winter.

This is our fourth Explora hotel and we love them. The whole experience is wonderful. Every day there is a choice of expeditions ranging from half day to full days with very knowledgeable/expert guides. The walks cater for all abilities and they also offer cycling and horse riding. There was a wonderful spa and pool if you want to chill. The food is terrific and the staff are absolutely charming. We are looking forward to Explora opening their next lodge...we will be there.

I am a well traveled Peruvian (have visited more than 100 countries and Cuzco obviously many times) and the whole experience is 100% AWESOME!
Service excellent, all guides well educated and always aware of your interests, preferences and needs during excursions.
Rooms with a spectacular view towards the Andes.
Food is great, Chef Virgilio Martinez from Central Top # 1 in Latin America does their menus.
All services and excursions are included, you just have to take your self to Peru and start to enjoy!

100% recommendable.

This is a very beautiful property and the pictures from management are accurate. The rooms are large ( I had a standard room) aesthetic and the bed extremely comfortable, with nice sheets, great mattress and pillows and windows overlooking the property with plenty of fresh air. The staff is very attentive and some of the guides outstanding. Special shout out to Lucy, Luis and Edith who made my stay and explorations a truly remarkable experience.

To me, the downsides were mainly logistical, and can be overcome with clear advance communication. You really need to make sure the excursions you end up doing are what you want to do, esp in busier season when you join others on those tours. Some guides can be more knowledgeable than others, too. My experience manager and guides above were willing to modify the program a bit to suit my interests but it definitely took effort because the brand overall seems a bit rigid, and is managed out of Chile. It’s good to ask questions in advance and clarify the itinerary etc so that you don’t feel like you’ve lost a day or two doing things you weren’t interested in, as some fellow guests explained to me they did.
Same goes for the food- my last dinner was truly outstanding because I explained to the waiter what I liked and they suggested dishes and wine pairing a that were perfect. My waiter Boris of course was a true professional.

Hey - I’ve been a single traveler many times before and even though I was at Explora with family, I think I would enjoy it just as much had I been there alone. All the hikes are in groups, the guides are very friendly, and the other guests (in my two times at Explora) were so inclusive.

Does anyone know when the pool and spa is scheduled to open?
Answer from lmoenneloccoz

Dear traveler: We have scheduled open the SPA and pool in early 2017. The reason for delay was because Inca ruins were found at the initial place of the spa, which forced to halt construction. Now, we are working together with the Institute of Culture of Cusco. Thanks for your interest, we hope see you soon.
