We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful hotel. The rooms and hotel itself are beautifully designed, with lots of effort to make it cosy and friendly, including happy hour with chilled music in the early evening every day, and such comfy and lovely beds. The view from our room was also amazing. It’s so well situated- minutes from the main square but quiet and safe.

My husband and I also had the misfortune to fall ill whilst staying at the hotel (unrelated)- and the staff could not have been kinder, checking in on us, extending our stay and going to extra mile to help us feel cared for whilst we were there. I can honestly say this is probably my favourite hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Thank you, El Retablo!

our group of 9 stayed here in late December 2019 and loved it!! Kevin at the front desk was amazing--so courteous and welcoming! And the hotel is absolutely beautiful. Beds are super comfortable and breakfasts were delicious. Fantastic!

This is probably one of the newest hotels in Cusco; everything including the bathroom looked brand new. A lot of thoughts and effort have been put into decorating this place, you will know what I mean once you stayed there.

Service is also excellent. My tour operator had actually reached out to the hotel to request for some personal information. Instead of just providing my information to the operator, the hotel staff actually informed me and sought my permission. This was something that I was really appreciative of.

The only small down side I would say, is it's location. It's slightly far out from the city center, although still walkable (within 10mins?) to the center.

Another thing to note is that the walk-in prices are way more expensive than if you made advance booking online, so be sure to do that!

This hotel is located on a small street that can be hard for taxis to find but when they do you will appreciate the lack of crowds and lack of honking horns from traffic. This hotel has a courtyard area where they have a fire pit and live music (at least when we were there one night). The rooms are beautifully decorated, although the rooms are not very spacious. The rooms are clean, the bathrooms are very nice and the colourful decorations are outstanding. They leave you chocolates, fruit and on 1 occasion they left us local bracelets. There is a room safe and a TV in the room. The breakfast was amazing as they had made to order eggs, toast, muffin, cereal, crepes - everything you could hope for. The only downsides are - hotel is about a 10 minute walk, along steep and narrow sidewalks, to the main plaza but it is quiet and there are skylights that let light in so it can be bright in the morning if you are trying to sleep in.Overall a very nice hotel. I would go back for sure.

I adored this hotel. The staff was great; they allowed us to check in early and assisted in arranging transfer from the airport to the hotel when we arrived. At the end of our visit, I was ill and they allowed us a late check out and to hang out at the hotel until our flight. The breakfasts are delicious and the kitchen staff is wonderful as well. There is a guard on duty 24/7. The decor is beautiful and charming. It is located about 10 minutes from the Plaza del Armas. Our room was on the smaller size, but it's not something I would complain about. Water is provided free of charge. There was a happy hour each night with live music. This has to be the most charming hotel in Cusco.

Great one night stay coming back from Machu Picchu and before heading back to Lima. Lots of natural lighting in the rooms, love the hand-painted art. Bathrooms are very tiny but the room is otherwise spacious. Beautiful views of Cusco. There are no lifts. Breakfast is basic, continental style. There is loud music during the day we couldn't figure out if it was from within our outside the hotel. When we checked out there was a large American tour group checking in so it could get rowdy / busy. El Retablo is about a 10-minute walk to the main square and on the way back it's uphill.

Welcome! Welcome! says this hotel from the staff to the brightly decorated interiors!
The boutique hotel opens into a courtyard and registration is in a side room. As you register, take time for a mate de coca (or coffee) break. The rooms are so thoughtfully decorated and painted. Each room has a plaque naming the artists who decorated the room. Our room on the second floor in the front (ask for room 105 or room 106) of the hotel look out on the city and has beautiful views in the evenings. We just delighted in the atmosphere. Breakfast staff is amazing, taking care of each detail. The omelettes were great. The crepes were too (just ask for two because they are small). Fresh orange juice and other juices. And if you have time, enjoy some music and a snack in the courtyard each early evening.

The hotel is nice and although an uphill walk from the main square in Cusco it's a good warm up for who was going to do the Salkantay Trail. Hotel staff was friendly and the rooms very clean and spacious.
The problem was the noise. We had our sleep disturbed several times during the night by either people banging doors or playing cell phone games (not the hotel's fault).

El Retablo is a beautiful hotel located a short downhill walk from the centre of Cusco. Rooms and the public areas are beautifully decorated with vibrant art which elevates the hotel from being ordinary. The rooms are clean and comfortable, food good, and the staff friendly and accommodating. We loved this hotel and thoroughly recommend it to other travellers.

Beautifully decorated, this small hotel is very comfortable and in a good position fairly close to the main square. Staff are very helpful and friendly.
Rooms have large glass panelled doors which mainly open on to the main courtyard or on to public areas so some rooms don't feel very private - worth checking with them. Rooms are beautiful, very cleverly decorated and the beds are very comfortable. Great toiletries in the bathroom. Breakfasts were excellent - best scrambled eggs we had in Peru, as this was the only hotel that didn't over-cook them!

Are you on a hill? What is the walk like to the main square?
Answer from Shane7770
Round Rock, Texas41 contributions5 helpful votes
Definitely on a hill, but in Cusco it would be difficult to find somewhere that's not. Walk down to the square is quick and easy - 5 minutes or less. Walk back tacks on a few minutes due to the incline. Beautiful little hotel though. Great staff. Close to the main square but far enough away to be quiet.
