The Casa Real is located on a rather quiet street just a short block from Cusco's town square. It is an older property and the rooms are fairly basic. My single room with bath had a television with a variety of English language stations (including CNN). Continental breakfast can be ordered very early if you are leaving early to go to Machu Picchu. The rate for a single with breakfast was only 55 soles (approx. $18 US). The staff was mostly English speaking and were very kind and helpful.

If you want a simple, rather comfortable and friendly bargain, in a great location, this hotel might be just what you are looking for.

The staff did everything they could to make my stay a pleasant one. I arrived early in the morning and they got a room ready by 6am. The breakfast is served on the top floor is superb. The 360 degree view of Cusco is spectacular. It is hard to say enough good things about the hotel and its staff.

I don't know where to start. Checkin took 3 mins while drinking tea. Bell boy had our bags in our room before we even knew our rooms. Reception staff doubled as kitchen staff and clearly cared about customer service. Bed super comfortable. Shower super hot. Room cleaned daily. Over and above were the reception staff, I have stayed at 5* hotels and expected the service I received here. I speak no Spanish so was pleased when my pigeon Spanish was greeted with hello sir we speak English. I like first name terms, not sir Jon etc... I'm not a sir! Tea was made, bags disappeared and 10,minutes later I was in my room. I wanted a tour of the sacred valley; as you do when in Cusco, within an hour tickets were booked ( get a taxi if more than 2 people but ask for private tour. Nearly same price. Also asked them to book trains etc) lots of shopping stops! After returning to the same Hotel ( did I mention they were excellent)? I asked them to reconfirm our Andean explorer train tickets ( they didn't have to) not a problem and all with a smile. I wish I could remember the name of the young lady and gentleman on reception as I would mention them personally. Good service above and beyond expatiations goes a long way in my book so handed a personal tip to the manager /duty manger/ person I wanted to tip, before I had left the building this was handed in. I hoe to the benefit of everyone!

We suffered with the altitude so on arrival and check in could have done without being on the fourth floor as there is no lift! Apart from that, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was a decent size, clean and comfortable. However we were freezing both nights and there appears to be no form of heating (or air con if it ever gets hot). Good location and all in all a good choice for a couple of nights in Cusco.

This hotel has such a great potential but I am sorry that the rooms were not well kept.

One of the up side is it's superb location. The hotel is right at the back and off the Gringo Alley (Jiron Procuradores). So you are literally steps from the central plaza. Again it's not inside the alley but it's at the the back street, so it's much quieter. Gringo Alley could be a little seedy but if you have traveled around the world, you would probably be streetwise enough to stay here.

The other up side is the rate. For US $35 a night for 2 is unbeatable. The breakfast was simple... good coffee, toast and jam.

I should also mention the great service provided. The ladies at the front desk are very helpful. We needed heaters and they gladly gave us one for each room. We needed info for tours and they helped us as well. They also allowed us to stow our 4 big luggage because we were leaving to MP & Sacred Valley for a few days in-between without fee.

Here come the problems... We had 2 rooms upstairs (Rm 18 & 19?) at the end of the passage. There is a terrible sewer smell from the bathroom floor drain in both rooms. Okay not being picky, after we shut the bathroom door and sprayed cologne to disguise the smell, it's not so bad. However when we tried to take a shower, we discovered that half of the shower curtain was covered by mildew and fungus growing at the back ... NO. Plastic shower curtains are very cheap and they really should replace them from time to time.

The other minor problem is the room doors were built in 1 x 4s. There are actual holes and gaps that you can put your pinky through. May be we didn't care so much about privacy but it's definitely letting the cold air in at night.

Anyway I would highly suggest the owner to look into these details.

On a side note for not so savvy travelers, the hotel's architecture follows the same as incan (?) or spanish colonial way (or other culture in the world such as hutongs in Beijing, riats in Marrakesh) - the guests rooms are facing a central courtyard - windows of all the rooms are only looking to the courtyard and other guests will pass in front of your door and windows. So if you are not ready for that, then you may want to check-in somewhere else.
