. Ecuador is pure magic and so is the very aptly named Magic Birding Tour, a family business run by Jorge and Irina Cruz and their wonderful staff. In eight days, we visited three of their private reserves, all of which offer superb birding and wildlife experiences. The Cruz’s are marvellous hosts: Jorge’s knowledge not only of birds, medicinal plants...

Spent 5 nights here in early June for birding and tourist visits to Otavalo market and Quito old city arranged by the lodge. Dr Jorge Cruz is a great guide not only for birding, but for local plants and their medicinal uses on which he is publishing a book. As a bird guide he and his son know all the...

This was my first trip to Ecuador & I could not have made a better choice. Booking it was easy over the internet - all my emails were answered completely & promptly. The itinerary provided was complete & detailed so I knew exactly what to expect. I booked the 8 day Magical Birding Circuit & it fully lived up to...

We visited this lodge during 3 days prior to our trip to the Galapagos. A wonderful setting in gorgeous sites and excellent catering as well as service from the personnel. We did not have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cruz himself but had a very nice and knowledgable person (only speaking Spanish though) at Tendayapa and a young man to...

This was our third trip to the Eco-lodge at St Jorge the Quito. This is the base for the Magic Birding Circuit: http://www.hostsanjorge.com which is a fully guided birding tour. We are experienced birders and we just had to enjoy the birds one more time. The lodge at Quito is and old monastery which has been fully refurbished and is...

Just reflecting back on last year's wonderful birding experience in Ecuador at the San Jorge lodges, coordinated through Connecticut Audubon. Jorge's knowledge and skills in birding were incredible as well as our other guide, Nolberto. The staff was extremely warm and welcoming, especially Jose, and made us feel at ease given our language barrier. I hope to return to Ecuador...

I’m not a hiker. Or a birder. I am an avoider of tours and not exactly in peak physical condition. I’m into insect avoidance. My travel partner is an overly particular, and often unwilling, participant in my travel schemes. How is it possible that these eco-lodges would provide the perfect vacation for us? The magic that makes the lodge circuit...

I spent two weeks in Ecuador visiting all four of the San-Jorge reserves and staying at the three Eco-lodges - Quito, Tandayapa and Milpe. I am not a fanaticall birder but I saw 300 species of bird and had a wonderful holiday. The staff were always friendly and helpful, the four course meals beautifully presented and tasty and the accomodation...

We spent two glorious weeks in Ecuador doing the circuit from San Jorge Eco-Lodge in Quito, Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary, Milpe Eco Lodge, and Sani Lodge in the Amazon. Fabulous & healthy four-course meals in Quito were served by the charming Vicente and Jaibir, and in Tandayapa, Dona Pilar cooked like a domestic goddess. There was a lovely dining room in...

My husband and I are serious (but not fanatic) birders on our eighth trip to Ecuador. We spent a week birding in eastern Ecuador before spending the last two nights at San Jorge in Quito. The hacienda is a charming old home laden with exquisitely carved wooden furniture and doors, lovely wrought iron rails and window guards, and rooms conveying...
