We visited Marriott Mena house right before Christmas 2020. We are a family of 4 with two little kids. The atmosphere was quite relaxed, since there weren't a whole lot of tourists due to the COVID-19 situation. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at the Mena house. The hotel staff were very friendly, did a great job cleaning and sanitizing the common areas as well as the restaurants/lounge. The breakfast had a great spread with both Egyptian and international food. The reason for the four star is our utter disappointment with the arranged pyramid tour, which completely ruined our experience. We were initially looking for private transport since the hotel concierge made it sound like it was quite a distance to the entrance from the hotel. The concierge service arranged for a pickup. We were met by a person called Saad, who started out trying to convince us that the only way we could tour the pyramids is using his service as a facilitator and guide. During the short ride to the entrance, he went on and on about how popular he was and that we should pay him extra and get his service. Since we have 2 kids, we thought it might be a good option if a driver would take us to the pyramids and drive us around to different spots where we could appreciate the history and admire the panorama. So we agreed to his service, which would cost 3 times that of the price for pick-up/drop-off. After we agreed, Saad proceeded to tell us that we need to get a camel/horse carriage ride. We were not up for it since the camels and horses looked to be in poor shape, but he kept insisting despite us telling him that we were not interested. After visiting the grand pyramid, we asked him to take us to a panorama point, but he kept telling us that camels are the only way to do it. Finally, I looked up on the internet and asked him to take us to a specific vista point. I also found that there was another point where you could see all three pyramids from a nearby café. However, he kept insisting that this was not possible, even though we paid him to drive us around. Furthermore, now he mentioned that we only have him for 2 hours and we need to move on. We finally gave up and asked him to take us to the Sphinx. When we reached there, he suggested we should just take a photo and go to the papyrus museum to buy stuff. We kept politely declining and he seemed very disappointed. We insisted and visited the Sphinx area. When we got back, he mentioned that we used up more time than agreed and we need to pay hefty amount for the extra time. At this point, we were very upset due to the constant hassle and complained to the hotel staff when we reached back. After a very unpleasant exchange, we ended up paying more (six times more) than the initially agreed price. This whole experience ruined our time at the pyramids in Giza. The next day, we visited the pyramids in Sakkara And Dahshur through a different company (that's for another review) and had a completely different experience, in a positive way.…
This is an old property with sprawling manicured lawns, and the most prestigious location where you get a Pyramid view from certain rooms, however, I seriously feel that it was much better managed by Oberoi. Marriott can certainly do a better job of it. We were given a nice room. We were there to bring in the 2020 New Year. The restaurants are expensive and overbooked. So always reserve your table in advance. Being an Indian, I did sense that they give preference to Europeans and Americans for sure. The Indian food at the Indian Diner is not good. Beware. Its cold and doesn't have Indian staff. The breakfast is also very boring. Stay here if you are a Westerner, have loads of money, and don't mind the food quality.
