Stayed for 3 nights and could not have enjoyed it more. Very authentic, traditional, historical, without being tacky or touristy, maintained and run to a T. Very central, yet, once you are on the premises, it feels like you are in a literati's cabin somewhere remote. Special thanks and credit to Sung Won Kim, who manages the place, for his...

It was our first time to Seoul and my friend and I decided to spend the first 2 nights in a Hanok. We chose this place based on the pictures and reviews people posted here. It turned out to be the best experience ever. We had lots of fun and al Mr.Kim was a lot of help. He helped pointed...

My son (16) and I stayed in this traditionally styled hotel. We were seeking a 'real Korean experience' and that is what we received during our stay and didn't want to be stuck in a western hotel. We chose traditional style bedding but could have selected western style and they would have switched beds. We chose western style breakfasts and...

We stayed at the Rakkojae Seoul, a traditional hanok style guest house in early October 2016 for 4 nights. Located between the eastern and western palaces in the Bukchon Village area of Seoul it really is perfectly located for visiting a part of Seoul that wasn't destroyed by the war. The neighborhood is interesting with many good restaurants and the...

Staying at Rakkojae Seoul was incredibly fun. Highly recommended for anyone seeking history & culture vacation. Rakkojae resided in the heart of the Bukchon village, convenience location, great walking neighborhood, steps away from tourism info center, and minutes away from subway station. We stayed for 3 nights in the separate house. The house was well maintained very nice and clean....

Stayed for a night in the separate house (which has 2 bathrooms) with 3 other friends. The house was well maintained and clean!Hosts were responsive and helpful. You could borrow the hanboks from the host to try on and take Instagram-worthy pictures with the traditional setting. As if you just hopped on the time machine! What we love most was...

It was quite cool to experience staying in a traditional Korean Hanok residence - it was similar to traditional Japanese accommodations I've stayed in - we slept on cushy beds on the floor, though we had electricity/outlets, lights, modern plumbing, refrigerator, and enjoyed a great breakfast. I think our group of 9 somewhat overwhelmed the small establishment, though they were...

Staying here was so incredibly fun I don't know where to begin. The floors of our room were jade (!) and heated from below by radiant heat (!) -- waking up in the morning was so much more pleasant with warm feet. The futons were really comfortable and the Korean breakfast was SO GOOD. Mr Kim, the manager, was incredibly...

If you want a "local living" experience, this hanok is really nice. You sleep on a mattress on the floor, traditional style. They serve a traditional Korean-style dinner every evening, as well as breakfast every morning. The only downsides: there is really no classic staff like in a bigger hotel, only a caretaker who changes the sheets and cooks the...

This was a beautiful experience of a tradition Hanok in the heart of Bukchon. The property is intimate and secluded, with only a few 'rooms' placed around a small central courtyard. Every detail carries style and has been carefully set out to create an escape to a simpler past. The underfloor heating made sleeping on the floor surprisingly comfortable. The...

Staying in Samcheongdong / Bukchon

Neighbourhood Profile
Samcheongdong / Bukchon
This historic neighbourhood was traditionally home to Seoul’s middle and upper-classes. Now it’s most famed for its clusters of beautiful, traditional Korean homes (called hanok), many of which are found in Bukchon. Many of these homes have now been converted into restaurants, cafes, shops, and even guesthouses, and their unique architecture offers a look at Korea’s traditional beauty. Samcheongdong’s main and side streets attract locals and tourists alike for their quaint and charming scenery, while the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) serves as the residence for South Korea’s president. Art fans will love exploring the many independent and private art galleries in the area.
