We're so happy we found this hotel as I booked an airbnb and the room was not up to my expectations. Though it is quite an uphill which was not an issue to us, it is close to so many places, restaurants, convenient stores and subway stations. They have a lift, you just have to endure the stairs in front of the hotel but just a few steps don't worry. I booked the lowest category of room but is really clean and spacious with a bath tub which is quite rare in Seoul. I don't have problems even if I open all my luggage in the room. Even the toilet is spacious too! They provide toilet amenities, water and coffee. The front desk guy speaks English too. I would love to come back and stay here again!

This hotel has everything you can ask for. Clean room, friendly front desk, great location with easy access to the metro station, Namsan area and walking distance to two popular shopping areas- MyeongDong and Namdaemun Market. I have been and stayed at five stars hotels many times all over the world and in Seoul. Most of these hotels are beautiful, clean with amazing services but these hotels cannot beat the location and the value of the Hill House Hotel in my opinion. The Hill House Hotel is a fraction of the price of these hotels.

Speaking of location, this hotel is located in a secluded street about five minutes’ walk(I literally had my timer on) from the metro station number 4 line at Hoehyeon train station (Exit 1). Make sure you find the right exit otherwise the walk from the station to the hotel could be 20 minutes instead of 5 minutes. Once you see a 7-Eleven to your left on the hill, you know you have walked about 90% of it. This is my way of letting you know in the event you walk in a wrong direction. Once you find the hotel, you will realize why the location is so great because everything that you need is nearby. The two major shopping markets are about ten minutes away—Namdaemun and Myeongdong and Seoul station is about 20 minutes’ walk from the hotel. Well, it took me 18 minutes to be exact.

Beside the great location, the room is really clean and the staff is really friendly. The TV has every channels known to man. That’s important to me because I like to watch BBC and CNN when I travel. The air conditioner worked flawlessly. In many countries, that is not always the case. The WiFi in the room worked also without any connection problems. The bathroom is spacious by any standard.

When you seek hotels near the Namsan area, the Hill House Hotel normally appears on the same page with a hotel called Namsan Hill Hotel which I also stayed at. If you are contemplating which one you should stay at, both hotels are very similar to one another. In fact, these two hotels are 10 steps apart. I would choose either one any day.

I have no complaints about this hotel whatsoever. If you are a frequent traveler like myself, then you probably care a lot less about the amenities that come with a five star hotel such as fancy lobby, gigantic room, concierge services and room services. The Hill House Hotel is all that you need.

Do not get scared by some reviewers' comment about the hill. My husband is 72, just had a total hip replacement surgery due to a recent fall in India. After a total medical mismanagement nightmare he had the surgery and only about 3 weeks ago he had started walking again. From the metro station Hoehyeon (line number 4) if you take Exit 1 as some reviewers very kindly mentioned, it took us less than 6 minutes to walk to the hotel. It is a MILD hill. If you are traveling with huge suitcases, etc, you can not use public transportation anyway. Take EXIT 1. That is the most important point. After you get out of the metro station, look at the other side of the street and you will see an elevator (non-functional). Cross the street to go next to this elevator, look at your Right, facing the elevator and with your back to the steps of the station across the street. Looking to your Right you will see Rex Hotel. It is a big, tall building surrounded by bigger and taller building but the most prominent hotel building in the neighborhood. Start walking toward Hotel Rex (see photos I am attaching). Stay at this side of the street. Pass Hotel Rex and keep on walking. This part is not hilly, almost flat. Don't make any turn, walk straight until you see a 7-11 on the same side of the street. By then you will also see a sign saying, "Hill House Hotel 20m". After the 7-11, make the Left turn, and this is the steepest part of the hill for about 20 meter. You will be in front of the hotel. If you are in a wheelchair, do not use this hotel. There is no ramp but a set of stairs to get to the reception.

At reception people spoke good English, they were friendly. Wifi in the room worked very well. The modem is in the room. There are a couple of English TV channels, Our bathroom was big and nice. Yes be careful while taking shower because like in most Korean homes and hotels, there is no shower curtain. However, we managed to take showers without making the entire floor wet. That is the only negative about this hotel. Neighborhood is excellent, filledc with restaurants, stores and markets nearby as well. We had to leave at 6:15 AM next morning. Breakfast starts at 7 AM. So, I can not comment about the breakfast. In the room there is a refrigerator, couple of paper cups, usual chemical crap called "coffee" made by some Food Inc. It is not real coffee but there are a couple of real tea bags and an electric kettle. We carry our own real coffee and a small gold filter, and two travel mugs. We can and did make real coffee in the room.

I will not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will stay here again. A great find.

If you are looking for a good, cheap hotel in Seoul, I highly recommend the Hill House Hotel. It is well located near the subway line and a number of the most popular attractions in Seoul.

I noticed someone complaining about having to walk up a hill? come on, really? It's not steep and if you have that much luggage, then catch a taxi the 100m from the subway station to the hotel. Taxi's are cheap.

some pictures and more info on my blog here
http://gdaykorea.blogspot.kr/2014/05/hill-house-hotel-seoul-cheap-hotel.html

Pros
It's cheap. Not as cheap as a backpackers hostel, but it is one of the cheapest hotels in Seoul. If you book ahead you can pick up a room for less than $80 a night.
It's close to Namdaemun Market, Namsan Mountain, Hoehyeon station, Seoul Station, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Deoksugung Palace.
It's a moderate walk/short taxi ride to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Bukhansan Mountain, Han River, Prison History Museum, War Memorial of Korea and Building 63
Most of the staff speak English with a reasonable proficiency.
Free breakfast - Cereal, fried egg, toast, jam, orange juice.
Free wifi.
Rooms and hallways didn't smell of smoke.
Bathroom was large.
Free soft-drinks in the bar fridge.
Free toothbrush and toothpaste.
Free tea and coffee in the rooms.
Rooms were quiet during the day and at night.
The rooms were clean - with the exception listed in the con below.

Cons
We found a couple of very long hairs on the bed. Considering how clean the rest of the room was, I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the hair got stuck in the sheets while they were washed. We called the front desk to complain they they immediately sent someone up to change the bedding.
No view from the window (but for the price, who cares!).
The bar fridge wasn't very cold.

Other
The bed was quite firm.
The towels were medium size. Not as big as western towels, but bigger than standard Korean towels.
The window was very small, but since there was no view that doesn't matter.

This hotel was fine to begin with until we noticed things being moved around in our room (e.g. open windows which weren't open when we left). We made a complaint to the staff who told us no-one had been in our room. A day later our iphone went missing from the room. We haven't heard anything from the hotel about it (and I doubt we will). Don't use this hotel!

Getting There:
We took the AREX (express train) from Incheon airport to Seoul station for 8000KRW.
It's a non stop train and the journey takes 43 minutes. Frequency is every 30 mins.
Please note that there's currently a 42% discount off the original fare from 13,800KRW.  Offer starts from July 1st 2012 - Dec 31st 2012.
Alternatively, there's a commuter train that stops on all stations but only costs 3,700KRW with frequency every 6 mins. The journey on the other hand is only 10 mins longer than AREX. The choice is yours.
Upon arrival at Seoul station, look out for subway line 4 and purchase a single journey ticket to Heohyeon station at the vending machine. Easy task as English is available on the machine. Happy days.
You would wand to head towards the Donggogae direction, Your destination station is one stop away from Seoul station and upon arrival, look out for exit 1.
Upon exit, you would see a mini mart on your right. Turn right and straight up until you come to a small junction/opening (Korean BBQ restaurant on your right), turn right and walk up until you see a car park on your right, that's where you will see Hill House hotel on your left.
The first walk may seem a little tricky else did I what I did, get directions from the mini mart upon arrival at exit 1, they know where Hill House is and the gentleman was very kind and helpful. I wouldn't recommend this option on train and then the short walk up the hill with people traveling with lots of luggages. Mum and I travelled light and only a cabin bag at hand so was still doable.

Reception:
Friendly and English speaking.

Room:
We had a queen size bed.  Room was clean and spacious. Free wifi in the room. Toilet is spacious, good water pressure and hot water. Basic amenities (tea&coffee making facilities) and basic toiletries.

Breakfast:
Basic. Butter and jam toast with fried egg with coffee/tea or juice/milk. Breakfast from 8am - 10am sharp. The aunty does not entertain customers or orders from 10am sharp onwards.

Location:
5 min walk to the subway and 10 mins walk to Myeondong district. A great shopping area with mixed variety of high to low end brands. Most importantly it's where you will find all possible beauty/cosmetics brands in Korea in which each shop will entice you into their shop with gimmicks..Be it facial cotton, face mask, wet tissue....Food and coffee shops all abundantly available in this area.

Summary:
Highly recommended!

I stayed in Hill House for 3 nights in November 2011. It was chilly outside but the heating in the hotel worked really properly. Nice reception staff, very good cable internet in the room. There are also computer with internet in the lobby.
The room is not big, but has a nice decor. The bathroom is huge, almost the size of the room, and the hotel provides you with many complimentary toiletry items you might need and bottles with drinking water. I was in the room 508 which had no real view but got enough light. Bed is comfortable, shower works properly, although there is no shower curtain. The room has a microwave, electric tea kettle, cups, and each day you get tow complimentary tea sachets.
Breakfast is minimal, just toast and eggs, but there are plenty of places to eat out right next to the hotel. Location cannot be better, 3 minutes walk to Hoeheyon metro station (down the hill), 5 minutes to Namdaemun market, 10 minutes to Myeongdong shopping area. all other places are easily reachable by metro or the hotel staff can call you a taxi (for extra 1000 won charge).
Warning: despite the good maps it is really difficult to find the exact way to hotel up the hill when you arrive to the closest metro station for the first time. It is better to take a taxi, so you don't wander up and down the hill with your luggage. However, once you are there, you will never get lost again.
There are no wardrobe to hang your clothes neither shelves to put yout things, just a couple of hangers.
Altogether my stay was pleasant and I will not hesitate to stay there again if I come back to Seoul. Absolutely worth the price you pay.

Stayed there for 5 nights, friendly staffs, clean rooms, eggs & toasts breakfast, nothing more to expect with this price. It's just that the location is a bit uphill and might be difficult to find for the first time.
If you intend to take the airport bus #6015, get off at Namdaemun Market stop and walk back to hotel, here is a clip of youtube to give you some idea of the walking path. (so sorry that it's not interesting and the quality is poor.)

Hill House Hotel sits really at a small hill and narrow street. However, it is very conveniently located, 5 minutes walking distance to the subway station – Hoehyeon and 7 minutes to Myeongdong. If you like to walk, it takes about 15-20 minutes to Namsan Park where the famous landmark of N Seoul Tower is located. The ‘shopper’s heaven’ - Nam Dae Mun Market is also nearby.

The hotel has several steps to clime up before entering the lobby. Check-in starts at 3pm and check out time is 11am. You may store luggage in the lobby if arriving early, and sometimes you might get a room before 3pm.

I got room #103, which is at right side of lobby level when facing the front desk. There are total three rooms on this side and the other two rooms serve as office and storage room.

In room #103 there is a tiny space between the first door and the second door, where you can change shoes before enter the room. The room is clean and spacious with cheap wood floor. The air condition is centrally controlled and the temperature is just right at night. The bathroom is large; the glass wall makes it look even bigger. By window, there is a long counter providing good space to store things since there is no wardrobe in the room. However, there is a clothes hook and a clothes hanging bar in the room, together with few hangers for guest to use. Other accessories including: coffee/tea maker, big flat TV with most Korean programs except CNN in English, small fridge, toiletries (even shaving cream for male). The room comes with two free bottle of water each day. There is a king-size bed, hard, but good for my troubled back. Bedding and towels are clean.

Breakfast is included and starts from 8:00 – 10:00am; it is at the check in level. Breakfast is simple; toast, butter and jam, fried eggs – these are provided by a service lady; you pour your own milk and orange juice, tea or coffee; besides there are apples and bananas, as well as some salad. There is no limit for breakfast, eat as mach as you wish. The dining room was very clean and the simple breakfast was sufficient to get you start a day in the morning, very good.

Tip to subway, when you go out of hotel, first turn right and a minute later turn right again, from there the street is going down the hill (a little hill), on the way there are few small grocery stores and some restaurants. When you reach the first busy (large) street, turn left and about 2 minutes you will see Hoehyeon subway station. This is also the crossing path to get to the other side of street. And also the pass to famous big store – Shinsegae, where you can eat and buy everything,

take the rail from Incheon Airport to Seoul station, take subway line 4, one stop to Hoehyen station, exit 1, walk 6 minutes and you are at the hotel.
Go to google map, seoul korea, zoom in to Hoehyen station exit 1, recognize the area, now zoom out and zoom back in the hotel, (show as a icon of a bed ), follow the settlelite map, by zooming in and out from both end, using the settlelite map, you will find the way from Hoehyen station to the hotel with no problem.
