The place was marginally run down 🥴
The staff more than made up for the short comings.
Friendly, happy and willing to go beyond.
Comfortably out of Port Vila, buses made it easy to move around (V150 per person to basically anywhere).
Meals are well above average 😋, even though the menu was limited, pricing was good value.
Safe and relaxing 👍
Highly recommended for a relaxing break.

The setting on the banks of the lagoon is beautiful ... the rooms had amazing views and were well-resourced and serviced. The breakfast was well cooked and varied ... couldn't fault it. The staff were really helpful and helped us to book taxis and catch buses. When I return next to Port Vila, this will be my preferred choice of accommodation.

The people are friendly and the smiles are wonderful. The room was clean, the view was wonderful. We could sit in our deck chair and look out over the lagoon. The water was alive with fish. Relaxing in the pool was great.
But like all things there are parts that weren't so good. The taps in the shower and the hand basin had to be handled just right to get some warm water for showering and shaving, don't try to add cold. When they weren't busy the food came out hot when they were under pressure with several people the food came out Luke warm. I was told that is island time.

All was well at the resort until the final morning when we had to get to the airport. We paid them ahead of time for transport to the airport. The morning they were supposed to drive us there, we waited and waited in the rain in the wee hours of the morning for almost an hour and no transport showed up. Finally we asked the "security guard" to call someone to find out what was going on. Come to find out, their van had broken down so they were unable to get there. Ummm..why didnt anyone call to tell us? We finally managed to get a bus to the airport ( paid our of our own pocket) and made it to our flight just in time.

Now. We have attempted to get our money back from this place to no avail. We have sent more than one email explaining that we have given you money for transport that didnt show up, then we had to pay for a bus on top of it! Nothing from them and it has been three months since we got back. How disappointing. GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK!

We knew we would be happy the minute Gianne greeted us. The decor is great and the big fold back doors open out to give a great outlook over the river. The food was amazing. Easy, relaxed resort with lovely gardens, staff and pool. All the staff were helpful. Was ideal to chill out and felt away from the rest of the world in the room. Easy quick trip in to the bustle of Port Vila. Recommend.

What a beautiful getaway they are just so pictursque and a most romantic place. It was very clean, the service and people charming. Consider this boutique place compared to the bigger resorts or chains.
Not too far out but far enough to feel secluded and in paradise.

My partner and I stayed at Sunset Bungalows for several days in January 2006. Firstly, I should point out that the staff were fantastic. They have a small group of staff (7 - 8) that are really friendly and helpful and seem to really care for the guests.

The rooms are large, with a nice quiet view over a lagoon. The verandah is quite spectacular actually, when the verandah doors are wide open you have quite an amazing view from any place in the room.

The room we stayed in was very plain, with a four poster bed (with mosquito netting), a small couch, a television and a small table. Whilst sounding like a standard hotel room, it was missing something. I can't quite put my finger on it. The bathroom seemed a little run down, however the shower was quite good. The kitchen, also run down was very token, with no utensils, a microwave, fridge and a hot plate in fairly awful condition.

The lagoon whilst probably swimmable, was not one of the nicer sections of water I saw in Vanuatu.

The hotel grounds were a little overgrown and could have done with some work. Whilst the pool would have been very nice, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a while. The grounds were actually quite nice, just could have done with a bit of cleanup.

The restaurant was similar in price to the more expensive restaurants in Port Vila (such as Micheners at Iririki) (eg. AUD$40-50 for lobster, AUD$25-35 for steak or chicken). However the quality of the food was no where near as good. The ambience of the restaurant was beautiful, right on a lagoon, pity about the quality of the food..

The continental breakfast (included in room rate) was very plain with two pieces of toast (generally overcooked and cold) brought out in a basket, with a selection of jams, peanut butter and vegemite, you also got an orange juice and coffee as part of the continental breakfast. I would have thought it may be appropriate to have a buffet set up with some cereals and fresh fruit available and/or facilities to cook your own toast. Should you wish to purchase breakfast, hot breakfast costs about AUD$10.

The hotel is about 5kms out of Port Vila and you can get a bus quite easily to town whenever you wish. It is difficult to do any walking around the resort as it is situated right on a road with very little walking room.

The hotel is a nice little boutique property, however it does have the problems above. The owners/management should spend a little bit of money cleaning up the gardens and pool area and lifting the quality of the food or dropping prices to reflect the quality...

I believe the hotel will suit older couples who are looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. There are very limited activities and things to do at the hotel and potential holiday makers should be aware of this before booking your trip... If you are looking for a quiet holiday with a bungalow right on top of a lagoon then Sunset Bungalows may well be the property for you!

We have just returned from a week's holiday at Sunset
Bungalows-we came back so refreshed and relaxed. The
bungalows feel like they are suspended over the lagoon
and we seemed to sit for hours just listening to the
sound of the water. The verandah was great, and the room
was large,but..the furniture was falling apart,it was
impossible to have a shower without burning or freezing, the continental breakfast was 2 slices of toast, coffee, and bottled juice(cereal would not have
sent them broke!).The resort generally gave the impression of needing a lot of maintenance which the
owner did not seem interested in.There is nowhere to stroll to after the evening meal as it is set right on
the road and you are very restricted with the selection on the menu. However..the staff were wonderful and caring and helpful and so happy and friendly, they left us with memories of a truly happy holiday.

Bus fares from airport
Answer from Fernsie
Lake Macquarie, Australia2,273 contributions325 helpful votes
I'm not sure how much a minibus is as we had a transfer arranged by Sunset Bungalows in our package. There are taxis waiting at the airport and there is a list on the notice board within the airport stating approx. cost from airport to most resorts. If you wish to catch a minibus you will need to leave the airport to do so, and you will need vatu. I would suggest getting the resort to provide a transfer.

you can get a shuttle (through the resort) for, I think it was $15 each way.. you could probably get a taxi or bus for cheaper but unless you're familiar with the public transport in Vanuatu, I'd recommend sticking to the shuttle bus.. the airport is small and was hassle free to find my lift waiting for me as I walked through towards the "Digicel booth" he was very happy and wanted to tell me everything I should know on my stay..
