We didn't stay but snorkeled for the day. The coral they have left and the fish are great but there is so much dead coral. They coral that they gave started to grow hasn't attracted much life and the coral looks a bit sad (no colour). I would really like to see them investing more in the coral on either trying to grow more or trying harder to protect the coral that is left. I worry in a couple years (if that) there will be more damage than repair/growth. Everybody is responsible for keeping coral alive but definitely a marine sanctuary, otherwise you are just another place that will advise the vital and have nothing left.

What a lovely place to stay. Snorkelling done less than 20 steps from my beach lodge. Yes! No boat hire involved. So many fish and equally lovely coral to photograph. Great range of accommodation from dormitory style through to a bungalow with its own pool. Restaurant, gift shop and dive facilities on site. Wonderful staff. We will be back

We booked for 10 days at Hideaway Island as it has its own scuba diving operation and that is what we wanted. Sadly my wife broke her toe the week before and couldn't go diving. Even more sadly, as a resort Hideaway has evidently declined drastically from the days of positive reviews in the past. One could accept that it's a tropical place so heat and humidity are expected. One could not accept that three out of the four overhead fans in the dining area were not working and had not been fixed for a long time. One could be a little disappointed that there is no air conditioned area anywhere in the resort that one could go to for some relief from the oppressive heat and humidity. One could accept that the resort does not advertise itself as a gourmet food destination. One could not accept that buffet breakfast each day (which is no longer included in the accommodation charge and costs 1000VT per person) consisted of stale white bread, frozen butter, peanut butter and apricot jam, a choice of corn flakes, wheat bix or oat crisps, reconstituted fruit juice and plunger coffee. Oh, and a fried egg if you specially begged and some segments of banana and papaya and grapefruit after we queried why there was no fruit. This is not the sort of breakfast you expect in a place that has the temerity to call itself a resort and certainly not at the price of 1000VT. Lunch and dinner choices were from an unchanging single small menu which had basically burgers, fish and chips, a coconut curry (which was delicious but how many times can you eat this in a ten day stay?) and a stir fried vegetables and rice choice. An adequate menu for day trippers but completely inadequate for people staying more than a day. When we asked one day for a salad we were told it wasn't available as the management couldn't obtain tomatoes! If there were lots of restaurants nearby the lack of reasonable meal choices would be bearable but in a resort on its own island where the only nearby restaurant is a short boat trip away (and serves pizzas which are good but not all that much else) and other restaurants are a twenty minute minibus ride away, the tiny choice of food is just not OK. The rooms (we had a beachside bungalow) are spacious but clearly in need of some maintenance (the dripping shower we notified to management was never fixed). The lack of wifi in the rooms was surprising in this day and age, particularly as there were no fans in the open reception area where wifi was available. The staff on the whole were friendly as was Stella at reception but there was a distinct feeling that management didn't care and that the resort under its new (since June 2023 apparently) owners was on a downhill slide to oblivion. The scuba diving operation at Hideaway on the other hand was good. Lulu, Kevin and Edwin were helpful and good dive guides. The rental equipment was OK except for one chewed through mouthpiece. The short boat trips to each dive site (I dived ten out of the 15 sites available) were pleasant, the dive sites were nice with lots of coral and mostly small fish, one turtle and one shark and I visited two wrecks. In summary if you're an experienced diver and want to spend three or four days diving in Vanuatu you might consider Hideaway Island provided you have no expectations of food, room wifi or mechanical heat relief. Otherwise give it a miss until the new owners start to do something about it.

My daughter and I spent five perfect nights on Hideaway: in a villa with perfect views and the sound of lapping waves to sleep to. We loved the daily snorkelling (thousands of colourful fish) and the welcoming friendliness of all staff. A true hideaway!

The dirtiest place I have ever stayed. Dried blood on the floor in the room. Hot water that only lasts 2 minutes if you’re lucky. Dirty floors that turn your feet black. Had to ask for our room to be clean and sheets changed as they were dirty prior to us using the beds. The new Chinese owners hid behind the local Vanuatu employees the whole time we tried to discuss our stay with them. We weren’t the only people staying that were awfully disappointed with how much you pay for what you get. I will never go back and would highly recommend to stay elsewhere.

A nice and cozy resort, with friendly employees, which is also found by day trippers from the mainland. The different types of bungalows and apartments are fully equipped. The kitchen is good. Plenty of ways to recreate on the island. The entire staff is extremely friendly. Also suitable for parents with children. And of course the.....underwater post office !

Did not stay at the resort but made a part day trip to the island to relax on the beach, snorkel and enjoy a seafood lunch. No need to pay for an expensive tour to this Vanuatu attraction (day trips are more expensive in Vanuatu than say in SE Asia) . I caught a public bus (van) from Port Vila town which dropped me off at the ferry wharf for Hideaway Island. Pay a fee on the island which gives you access to the beach, bar and restaurant. The snorkelling was quite good for the tropical fish and some corals. Take reef shoes (or fins) for the coral fragment beach and rocky/coral hazards in the water (I took my own snorkelling gear and reef shoes (can buy for less than 20AUD at Big W or K-mart) with me from Aus.); you can usually hire or use equipment provided by tours or resorts in Vanuatu but it can be very worn or unkept). Take care to avoid stepping on the corals which are close to the shore (a feature in Vanuatu islands that reefs can be close to the shore) and marine life (sea slugs, starfish, large sea worms). The swimming and snorkelling area is between two pontoons. The hap-hazard array of worn beach chairs and tables means a relaxed atmosphere. I would not go to the island or other Port Vila attractions on days cruise ships are docked in port as they can get crowded, etc. Enjoy a nice day out in the tropics.

I have been to Hideaway for many day trips in past years but not for 8 years. This time was not good. We arrived on a cruise ship in Mele Bay and were beset with taxi and van drivers wanting $75pp or more to go to Port Vila town (20 mins). A boat driver offered to take us to Hideaway Isle for Aus$100 return. Upon arrival at Hideaway the high entrance charge was $20pp. The snorkelling was soso but there was 15ft of dead sharp coral all at the waters edge (the beach) and removing fins and getting up to the sand was extra painful. A concrete ramp to the water or a ladder at the dock would make it easy. It seemed money hungry people now manage it. The public toilets were also on the nose. I will never visit again.

This was my fourth visit to Hideaway Island. My first visit was in the mid-1980's then twice more in the mid to late 1990's when I visited for business as a diving store owner when I took tours to Hideaway. I loved it then and always knew I'd be back but, unfortunately, it just took a bit longer than I 'd hoped. This time was my first chance to take my family and introduce them to this beautiful place. I was so pleased to find that it really hasn't changed much in all those years. Proudly 3.5 stars (because it's often nice not to be perfect) and still offering the same genuinely warm, accommodating, local feel with great service, great food and bar AND, of course, the easy diving and snorkeling on a fantastic coral reef, in warm water, straight off the beach. Best tip is to take time to meet and mix with the locals. It's a very short walk to the nearby village of Mele where you can find a couple of little grocery stores to purchase local food, or buy fresh local food from the street stalls and/or even visit one of the Kava bars after 5pm. People are very willing to talk and share local stories or history etc (we've come home with a couple of 'secret' recipes that we're definitely going to try to recreate. Also, they love it if you make an effort to learn even a few words in their village language - even if it's just good morning or good night. If you're looking for a wonderful place to really relax and unwind this is it. I've been 4 times over a 40 year period and I will definitely be back - hopefully a lot sooner this time.

Exactly as you would expect and a perfect way to chill out for the day. Best to arrange your transport in advance as most bus drivers are not too keen to drive there. Short ferry ride over is fun and the cafe is well priced. Take reef shoes as the beach is coral.
