We visited Niue for a week back in 2007 and loved it. When considering a second holiday there, we decided to go for two weeks, and ended up loving it even more! For value for money in Niue, I don't think you can beat Aleki Guesthouse. Ozwin includes a rental car in his rates, which is so very convenient and excellent value for money. The guesthouse is located around 12 minutes drive south of Alofi town, and this is a good marketing ploy to encourage people to stay there. A rental car is pretty much compulsory in order to explore the island, so it was great not to have to think about hiring one separately. Ozwin was at the airport to meet us on arrival and directed us to our car. At the end of our stay, we just left it there again before checking in. As for the accommodation, Aleki's is clean, tidy, and has everything we needed for a comfortable holiday. We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment. The tiling might not be straight, and the couch a little on the worn side, but the bed was very comfortable and the shower hot. Ozwin is very accommodating, responding quickly to any extra requests we had (a blanket, a weightbelt for snorkelling). We were welcomed with delicious chilled drinking coconuts, and a large bunch of bananas were placed in the shared kitchen area for us to help ourselves to. Having self-catering was SO handy for our breakfast and lunches. We paid for an 'extra bag' on the Air NZ flight and filled it with all that we needed - including the tonic for our gin - so we hardly had to shop locally at all. The supermarket is very good, however supplies can be hit and miss, and everything more expensive that in NZ. We probably paid more by taking up so much, BUT we had exactly what we wanted, when we wanted it. We dined out almost every evening, and driving the few minutes back into town didn't bother us at all. We dined at the the Guesthouse 3 times - fresh fish a couple of nights, cooked on the BBQ and supplied by some of the other guests staying there, and another night we had 'left-overs' that our hosts at the Umu night we attended had insisted we take home with us. There are no water views at Aleki - it is on the other side of the road. But it's just a two minute slow stroll to Avatele Bay - perfect for wandering down with our G&T to watch the sunset, for the Washaway Cafe on Sundays, and for the great snorkelling in the bay. Matavai Resort is just 3 minutes drive up the road and we popped in 3 times during our stay - a great spot for sitting on the deck with a coffee or cold beer and looking for whales. We made good friends with the local dogs, but could do without the island roosters :) As many others have said, and this applies to anywhere on the island, (or anywhere in the Pacific Islands generally!) - don't forget your earplugs. All part of the island charm...! All in all, it was a great stay - thanks Ozwin.

My husband visited again this year, after a few years away. We would go back again (and probably will soon). We stayed in the guest house and got a car included (your own transport is essential if you want to get the most out of your stay in Niue due to the lack of public transport) The guest house is a group of self-contained units that share a deck and kitchen area (at the end of the deck). Each unit has it's own fridge, crockery, cutlery, microwave, kettle (jug) and toaster, which means you can either use the main kitchen or prepare simple meals in your own unit. You also have a private living area with a TV and your own bathroom. I like the fact that the single units don't have the beds in the living area, so you can leave your partner to sleep in. It's not entirely polished (tiling isn't straight, you don't get towels folded as swans) but it is clean and the TV, fridge, microwave, jug all look pretty new and worked well. You also have a friendly and helpful host. We did a lot of diving, and it's very convenient to Niue blue (the dive company). There's also a lovely "beach" just a short walk away, that is ideal for snorkeling and whale watching. On Sunday you can really should spend the afternoon/evening at Washaway. It's a must do! Niue has the usual island limitations, so take some basic supplies (e.g tea, coffee, marmite) and obviously you'll need earplugs if you aren't used to cockerels. That, however, is true of anywhere you stay in most of the islands!

The Aleki's guesthouse is motel style accommodation based in Avatelle village about 1 kilometer away from the resort and five minutes walk away from Avatelle beach / boat launch area (where the Washaway cafe is based - however the cafe is currently not open and does not seem to have been open for quite a while (which is a shame as we were really looking forward to going there) The accommodation is clean and tidy with what you would expect from motel accommodation (our units were cleaned every day). Each unit has basic kitchen, however the outdoor kitchen are is very good and there is also a washing machine for guests to use. Ozwin was a fantastic host. On the monday we arrived he cooked from Mahi-mahi for us which was delicious. Ozwin also treated us to fresh pawpaw, coconuts and tuna which he had caught (he is a great fisherman). It was also great to have a car included in the price which meant no hassle trying to organise to hire one. We had great adventures around the island and loved the Mazda Demio - she was such a great car and a great size for the four of us! We spent our days out and about exploring and snorkelling and cooked at Alekis in the evenings. We also went fishing - we would like to highly recommend Fish Niue Charters - BJ is a fantastic fisherman (known as the best on the island)! We all agreed that Alekis was perfect accommodation and had everything we needed while being in a village setting. Thank you Ozwin for having us to stay, you were a wonderful host - we loved every minute, we just wish we had booked for two weeks. We look forward to staying with you again. Samantha, Duncan, Jenny and Mark

Oz, thank you for having us at your guest house. We loved it, starting at the airport where you met us with your beaming smile. Our family suite came with a rental car, very relaxed, spacious, clean, no mosquitoes as this was our main concern for our boys. Enjoyed chilling out on the verandah for breakfast, dinner, good convo with lots of laughter & a glass or two of wine..lol. The outdoor communal kitchen was handy, great idea. Thank you for the coconuts & pawpaws. Real value for money & a great host. We totally recommend Alekis to anyone who loves the tropics. Fakaaue lahi Oz. Jury, Steve & boys

As first time visitors to Niue we were really impressed with our stay. What was different about this island compared to others was the lack of tourist, with only 2 flights a week and only 1600 people living on an island 3 times larger than Rarotonga. There was the sense of how things used to be in the good old days...No crowds, a raw island that wasn't commercialised. We stayed at Aleki guesthouse for 7 days. We are now good friends with Ozwin our host. He's just a decent bloke with a big heart. Always smiling, there to give us great advice. The guesthouse was clean and tidy and was a great base over this time. The price was amazing compare to other places and the price included a rental vehicle which is a must have. We will definatey be back. thanks Ozwin for all, appreciate who you are as a man. Some advice for others. Bring reef shoes Grocery shopping 20 - 40% more expensive than NZ

Many guests for the wedding stayed at the main resort, but my dad preferred to book at Aleki's and loved it! The host met him at the airport with the car (which was included in the accommodation cost - fantastic deal), the RAV-4 was perfectly suited to Niue's sometimes bumpy roads, and fared better than the smaller rental cars the rest of our group had hired. The room is basic but beautifully clean and has everything you need. There is also a communal kitchen where drinks and fresh fruit was shared - such a lovely and appreciated touch! Aleki's is located in Avatele, near the Washaway Cafe (open Sundays) and Avatele Beach, lovely for a swim. It's also very close to the Matavai Resort which has a restaurant and bar. Thank you for a fantastic stay!

Lovely host Ozwin, largest middle unit was very easy to ventilate (hot climate!) and had plenty of shade under front porch. Place was spacious, clean, well maintained, secure, had a well-supplied outdoor kitchen (outdoor cooking great for this climate), laundry, and beds were comfortable. Car hire and wifi optional. We hired 3 of the 4 units for a large family group and enjoyed the shared porch and outdoor kitchen facilities. Very easy place to relax in and only 3 minutes walk to a beach!

This is my first TripAdvisor review and I am reviewing the lovely Aleki's Guesthouse, a place I spent a week at in January 2018. I was looking for a budget stay and Aleki's did not disappoint. $105NZ for a single bedroom apartment in the lovely and very peaceful village of Avatelle. That price included a car which you definitely need to get around the island. It takes about an hour to circumnavigate Niue on the ring road that roughly follows the coastline. The villages are mostly along the ring road and much of the interior of the island is dense tropical forest. Aleki's is in Avatelle village, which is ten minutes from the main centre, Alofi. Alofi is great to visit for dining and supplies, but I was happy to be in Avatelle. It is lush and peaceful - except for the roosters crowing at dawn, which other reviewers have also mentioned. They didn't bother me though. They are part of the charm of staying in a Niuean village. Ozwin is a lovely host - warm, genuine and welcoming. He has an interesting life on Niue and we had some great chats. I was also very grateful for the fresh drinking coconuts Ozwin shared with me. There are coconut trees all over Niue, but strangely no cafe offers coconut juice. The units are clean and have everything you need, but are fairly basic in keeping with the pricing. Niue is humid and the rooms are not air conditioned, which some people may find challenging. I'm not great with heat and humidity, so there were many cool showers and hours by the fan. Or I'd jump in the car and cool down while doing some sightseeing. As I said, the price is amazing and if you want the mod-cons there are other more expensive options you can consider. As a budget stay Aleki's offers exceptional value and is the perfect base to explore fascinating Niue. If you are there on a Sunday don't miss the Washaway cafe at the Avatelle beach. Super fresh fish and well priced wine and beer. The place has real character. The other benefit of staying at Aleki's is the proximity of the Scenic Matavai Resort. Non-guests can visit the outside bar and restaurants. The views from the bar are really special.

Alexis guest house was in a perfect location, quiet and relaxed. It was very clean and very comfortable and Oswyn was an incredibly obliging host. We appreciated his supply of freshly made coconut cream for the mahi mahi fish that we prepared with fresh lime juice. Niue is very laid back and Alekis is classic island style living. This is not a resort but rather an island experience,in our eyes much better than a resort. Having the car option was absolutely vital and would recommend anyone staying there do the same. The guest house has a basic, shared kitchen so we could self cater easily. This is a more affordable option than eating out. Niue restaurant prices are comparable to Australia/New Zealand. The access to WiFi was excellent and fast. Oswyn is a very kind and easy going host who was easy to have a conversation with. Oswyn is an excellent communicator on email prior to the trip, he answered really quickly.
