This is a beautiful place to stay in Niue. It's upstairs in the same building as the Niue Yacht Club. I stayed here for two and half weeks in June 2016. The backpackers comprises four bedrooms, three with shared bathroom and one with an ensuite. There was a big lounge and a large two roomed kitchen complete with a stove and multiple fridges and freezers.
The backpackers is housed is an older trader's style home, built perhaps in the 1920s or 1930s, full of character in wood, with Oregon Pine timber floors, louver windows and generous spaces. It's incredibly comfortable and relaxing, the cool breeze would blow in from the sea, the rooms are light and airy. My spacious bedroom had a large Queen sized bed, an ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet. It was an amazing price at just NZD $35 (US $25) per night. For many years I've been spending my winter holidays in South East Asia, particularly Malaysia, mainly because of the lower costs there. However, Niue Backpackers, was actually cheaper (less expensive) than Malaysia for an equivalent standard of accomodation. It is excellent value for money and means that people can stay for much longer than they might have otherwise. The next time I go back I'm planning to stay for a month!
I don't usually stay at backpackers (the last time would have been 20 years ago), preferring smaller guest houses, B&Bs, boutique hotels, pensions and gitês. That is because I usually associate backpackers with lots of noise, dorms and numerous loud parties. While that can be fun, I'm no longer in an age group that enjoys that kind of travel experience, at least not on a nightly basis. The Niue Backpackers however, is quiet, small scale (yet roomy and spacious) and homely. I met some really great people there and had a good time socially, but it was more like a guest house or European style pension than a backpackers. When people asked me where I was staying I often just said "at the yacht club" because it didn't really feel like a standard backpackers. However, it definitely provides accommodation on a backpacker budget, which is great!
The owners, Ira and Brian, who also run the Yacht Club, are friendly, hospitable and kind hosts. Brian meets guests arriving at the airport and drops us off for departure when we are about to leave. They provided us (myself and fellow guests) with excellent information about Niue and where to go on this mesmerising and enchanting island. They were always available to help us with any aspect of our stay at the backpackers. They have two dogs, Polly and Lucy, who are delightful and often accompany guests on their walks, especially to the beach at Utuko just 2 minutes walk away.
The backpackers is located up from a cove known as Utuko, probably the best beach on the island. You can swim at all tides (at low tide it isn't quite over an adult's head, it is at high tide however, but excellent swimming no matter what the tide) in its crystal clear waters (the pool is at the far left of the cove).
Niue is a most extraordinary island. It's sea caves, hiking trails, chasms, forests, waters and reefs are just enchanting. I had a bike and was able to traverse vast areas of the island by cycle. Long stretches of road were almost deserted, empty, silent. I didn't need a car and was perfectly able to get around on bike. There are a few fierce dogs on the far side of the island and they might give you a fright (I encountered them at Lakepa, Vaiea and Avatele). They didn't do any more than bark and bear their teeth, but still it might give you a jolt if you're cycling.
Niue is four times larger than Rarotonga (Cook Islands) or Bermuda, but whereas those islands have populations of 10,000 and 65,000 people respectively, Niue only has about 1,700 to 2000 people living there. Niue is uncrowded and unspoilt, it's environment is pristine. Having said that, there is still a buzz and a vibrancy to Niue. The main town and capital of Alofi, where the backpackers is located, is a busy and energetic place, cars often zooming past light into the night and early hours, parties in the distance, people having a good time. I've spent sometime on the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia, which has a similar population and land area to Niue, but which is extremely quiet. I thought Niue might be similar, but in fact it seems much "busier", while retaining a gorgeous unspoilt environment cared for by a welcoming, warm and hospitable people. The infrastructure is excellent. In many places across the island there are toilets, fresh water showers (at beaches and chasms) and picnic tables. It is a very developed island. Electricity is well supplied, the roads are excellent, water is drinkable (and in fact is delicious) and there are good internet connections.
If staying at the Backpackers and self-catering you might want to take some food with you, especially if you are used to favourite brands of pasta, rice, coffee and oils. While Swanson's, the main supermarket, has all the basics there isn't a lot of choice and some items can run low. It is possible to get enough groceries by shopping at different locations (Swanson's, convenience stores which can be well stocked, the garage [gas station] and the market), but still bringing food is an option. Remember to retain supermarket dockets and receipts for Niuean customs so they can see that it meets biosecurity standards. I think you can bring in almost any kind of food onto the island so long as it's not honey (there maybe some restrictions on fresh meat, you would need to check on this).
My trip to Niue was part of a combined holiday that included Tahiti and Bora Bora. I spent most of my time on Bora Bora and Niue. They are very different kinds of islands. While Bora Bora was spectacular, its magnificent lagoon, French cuisine, mountains and gorgeous beaches, it shared many similarities with other Pacific islands. Niue on the other hand felt truly unique. While the Pacific wonderful, there are some islands which are truly unique and different from other destinations. The Isle of Pines is one of them. Niue is another. The Niue Backpackers offers a relaxing, memorable and comfortable place to stay on this enchanting, beautiful and mesmerising island.

The Niue Backpackers; also known as the yacht club 😉 was a great, central place to stay. It is very basic but really captured the vibe of Niue, we felt like we were in Niue. As opposed to the resort (we had friends staying there); the resort felt like you could have been anywhere.
Ira the host is very sweet & helpful. Polly, the dog lives down stairs & will always give you a warm welcome too.
If you prefer to spend your time exploring the island rather than sitting at a pool drinking cocktails then Niue Backpackers is perfect.

Been there for a week and had the best time, Ira & Brian the owners are really kind and welcoming and they are always keen to help guests. They gave me one of their bicycles to bike around to see things, gave me good hints about places to eat and things to do. In my case I was by my own and had a twin room just for myself (they don't mix strangers) and it was easy to chat and meet other guests staying. Price for one night is really cheap so my stay for 7 days was very affordable and It's in the centre of the capital town of Alofi where just few minutes walking you'll find shops, restaurants and grocery stores; it is just beside Crazy Uga Café and Utuko Reef. Will definitely stay here again next time I'll be there, strongly recommended if you're traveling cheap and want to save money for tours.

Wonderful hosts, very simple accommodation - don't expect anything flash. Great lounge area to hang out, and good location right in town. Bed was comfy and despite it being a backpackers I had a room and double bed to myself which was a bonus.
There was a mouse residing in the kitchen, but it seems to be a frequent occurrence!!

Responded 17 Apr 2014
we are a friendly team here at Niue Backpackers unfortunately it did not include the mouse which was moved on by our backpackers cat called Frosty. I like how we can offer a room all for your self we never put strangers in with strangers. We have been told by other backpackers its a nice surprise. We are simple but comfortable and a little colourful with everything you need. I always say we are bright and breezy

Niue Backpackers is in town, has amazing hosts and is right next to everything you need. We found Niue Backpackers to chill and relaxing. It was our second time in Niue (the first we stayed with mates) and it was awesome to experience warm Niuean Hospitality.
Definitely recommend!

Very good location, very comfortable and very lovely people! Brian and Ira were always concerned about our needs, asking if we needed something during our staying. Good conversations at the Yacht Club downstairs, made some really good friends there! Very close to the wharf, sea tracks and good restaurants. Hopefully I will see them again!

I stayed here for a week and loved it - good service, good location, great value for money. I felt as though I was just staying at an old friends' beach house. It's in easy walking distance to the shops (including main supermarket), and there are some very good sea tracks close by.

Situated close to the town & port of Alofi the Niue backpackers offered basic rooms with ensuite and communal cooking and dining / lounge area. With a few minutes walk you can reach the shops and bakery for everything you need. Some of the best snorkelling can be found straight of the jetty by the port, clear deep blue sea offers a myriad of things to see. All the people on Niue are friendly and helpful making the stay very enjoyable.

My second time on Niue - my second time in the backpackers! So I thought of siting down and writing this little review.
Very nice place with the opportunity to meet interesting people.
Four rooms (2 double, 1 double ensuite, 1 triple) - not quite what your usual backpackers is like with their dorms; here you don't share a room with someone you don't know.
Big lounge, kitchen for self-catering including facilities for making tea and coffee, TV, lots of books, big table, comfy sofas, Niuean decorations (shells, weaving, and wood-carving).
The price is absolutely unbeatable! I pay more for my shared apartment here in Auckland.
Owners are lovely people, always in for a chat and knowledgeable travel guides.
The have a dog named Lucy and a cat named Frosty, and some natural alarm clocks (chickens - you will find that everywhere on the island).
In the centre of Alofi (the main village) - in walking distance to shops, the market, and several beautiful snorkeling spots.
I'll go back next year :-)

The facilities are basic and nothing fancy, but the location is very convenient. The biggest highlight of this place is the kind-hearted owner Moka who is such a wonderful woman. She brought us Niuean food and told us lots of stories. She offered to help in any way she could. She has a great outlook on life and is a sweet person to sit and have a chat with. Thanks for being our Niuean mom and thanks for bringing us a delicious Uga!
