After reading some good reviews on Hostel World we thought we’d give Colombo Beach Hostel a go. Even though the staff were friendly and the food was good and cheap, we would not recommend staying here (although we only stayed in a dorm so can’t vouch for the privates). My boyfriend woke up to masses of red bites all over his body. Not only were there bed bugs, but the AC was down meaning one fan (that didn’t rotate) was left to cool the whole room- it didn’t reach the beds and made it awfully uncomfortable to sleep in the dorm.

Room was not clean, especially the private bathroom had not been cleaned after the last guest, stains everywhere. The freshness of the sheets was also quite unsure. Mosquito net full of holes and reeking. A/C only partly working. Breakfast at extra charge, but still bad. We had initially booked two nights but left hastily after the first.

It’s truly disappointing to find such small minded people in a modern world. Your issue was that you had paid HW deposit for two nights. You checked in mid night and wanted to stay only for one. Which we allowed without charging you for cancellation. But you demanded further, that we reimburse your second night’s deposit. Your friend too (though she had booked for one Night) has made a similar review on the booking station. I see that your anger has not Left you even though the incident happened on 12th Feb. I hope u both are proud of yourselves. It’s a shame to know some people have so much hate. Nevertheless, I do hope you find peace ✌️ Do enjoy your stay in the island.

The hostel has the best location: really calm area, just 200mts from the beach and 15 minutes by train from the city center (Colombo). Good atmosphere. Amazing common area. Beautiful sea view. Staff very friendly and helpful. Free filtered water. Shared rooms (With fans) Private Rooms (With and Without A/C) The area around has many conveniences: market, pharmacy, restaurants. Just 15 min walking distance from Mount Lavinia train station and 5 min walking to bus stand (many options to go to Colombo)

This hostel is very good as the staff lookafter you well during your stay. they help with all the travel tips and foods you need. cafe area is beautifully and nice atmosphere where you can sit and enjoy your coffee. we will be back and highly recommended this hoste

Nice little place, rooms are basic but clean and have everything you need. Staff are very friendly. The kitchen area could do with improving. Great location a few minutes walk to the beach, much nicer than staying in central Colombo.

I arrived at 1, checked out again at 3.30. i understand that different people have different standards when it comes to cleanliness. i wanted to talk to the manager and explain that this is not working for me and that i would gladly give him something for his trouble. then it got unfriendly. paid more than i did in any other sri lankan hostel.

The food in the restaurant was good and at a reasonable price and the Staff was very friendly and helpful. The only downside is, that, even though the beach is close, we felt unconfortable to go in the water in bikini, as there were only men and it felt weird, being the only woman

I stayed here when the hostel was completely empty, and decided to shorten my stay. The manager absolutely refused to allow me to shorten it, and insisted I pay for an extra 2 nights that I would not even be staying (even though the place was literally empty so there's zero chance I was taking away the opportunity for other customers to stay). He was rude, unreasonable, and downright greedy. The neighbourhood is also rather unsafe. I had someone threaten me on the beach and shake me down for money. I will say the staff is very kind, it's just a shame the manager is such an unreasonable man. Avoid this place, if you can.

I enjoyed my time at this hostel. It was very clean, the staff was super, and the roof top with sofas, kitchen and garden was a plus. I even stayed at their other hostels. The owner helped me to arrange and plan other destinations in Sri Lanka and left me keep my bag at the hostel for free while I toured the country. I highly recommend this place.

My favorite things about this hostel were the rooftop and the staff. The kitchen on the roof meant I could cook my own food when I felt like it (healthy choices and saving money) and the common space there was relaxing and beautiful. Dorms were basic but comfortable. Travis and Shiromi and Dinesh were wonderful hosts. They helped my with whatever I needed and gave me lots of good info and travel tips for my time in Sri Lanka. The hostel was very close to the beach and I walked there every day. Easy bus ride into Colombo city.
