Stayed at the Thang Long for four nights after reading reviews on this website. Initially sent an e-mail booking a room (superior) and received an e-mail reply very quickly and without having to submit my credit card number. Someone was there to pick us up from the airport on time. Rooms are a little small as is the bathroom but very clean. Has everything you really need and the position is excellent, right next door to the Sheraton! Staff are very accommodating and some speak very good English. Basic brekkie which includes one food item - toast, soup or eggs and one drink - juice, coffee or tea. All presented very nicely and always hot. Would definitely stay there again.

My husband and I chose the Than Long after being given options via an agent in Hanoi. It proved to be perfect for our needs. The room was quite small but well equiped. The rate included breakfast which was basic but quite adequate. Location was central and we were able to walk to all the major attractions. We actully stayed there twice in a period of 1 week and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Thang Long is a small gem situated just off one of the main tourist streets in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 and a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal to Vung Tau.
The rooms are small but always clean and if you get a Superior room the bathroom is good. The regular rooms have a very small bathroom and the shower tends to make everything wet.
The beds are hard but that is very common in Vietnam and soft comfortable beds are a rarity.
The staff are always friendly and helpful and the breakfast is adequate and free with the room. WiFi is available in the rooms however the signal strength varies depending on the floor you are on. Free internet access is available at reception.
Cable TV and mini-bar fridge in all rooms.
The rooms are well priced between USD$30-40 a night.
I have stayed there many times and never had a bad experience.

Quaint little hotel near the river. Pretty good location, was able to walk everywhere I needed to be. The bed was hard as a board, but the room was clean and the restaurant is pretty good. They lock the place down at night with a big steel door and you need to get buzzed in, which is a bit annoying.

We were booked into the Thang Long Hotel in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) for just a couple of nights, after having spent 8 days in complete luxury, cruising from Siem Reap in Cambodia to Saigon, down the Mekong. My expectations were that we might find the hotel a bit disappointing after such an experience.

This was not the case at all! The hotel is a very bright pinky/red, very tall and narrow like most Vietnamese buildings, and has the most charming advertising, which includes reference to an escape chute in the case of fire. This seems to be literally a long tube, starting from a cupboard in the breakfast room on the 8th floor, and going straight down to the street. The website shows a young woman sitting on the pavement, having presumably just emerged unscathed from plummeting 8 floors down the chute ...sometimes it is called a salvage bag! I have yet to work out how it might work, and fortunately we were not required to use it!

All this aside, first and perhaps most important if you're only spending a couple of days in frantic Saigon, is the location. This hotel is plumb in the middle of the CBD, one street away from the new Sheraton, but a universe away in terms of price. It is close to all the attractions and sightseeing options, as well as to a huge range of restaurants, both local and international.

The rooms are surprisingly big, given the narrow frontage of the hotel (all rooms span the entire width of the building I think), with typically hard beds, pretty good bathroom facilities, big TV with about 50 channels, minibar, aircon, a safe, etc.

Breakfast was included in the VERY reasonable charge, and was great - eggs, omelettes, wonderful baguettes, very strange coffee, juice, a bowl of the local noodle soup (pho), toast, and so on. The view from the breakfast room was expansive, helping to get some orientation in a city where you can't really see the sky in some of the narrow streets ... and the box with the escape chute really was a talking point!

There's free Internet in the lobby, and the friendly and charming staff will be very helpful with tour information, etc. They organised a half day city tour for us in an aircon car with a driver, who would drop us off at various places, and be waiting for us when we came out. This service is at a very reasonable cost, and we took this option again in Hanoi later on in the holiday. It is by far the best value way to see a city if you only have a short period of time.

Overall, I was impressed by the ease of booking via the Internet (I had selected the hotel using Trip Advisor), and by the quality of the accommodation, particularly the value for money. The staff were friendly, charming and helpful, and I give it a 10 out of 10!!!

I went to Hochiminh city with my girlfriend and we had a wonderful vacation. We stayed at Thang Long hotel downtown Hochiminh city at the heart of everything. The hotel has the perfect location where u can get to everything from there. The staffs are really nice and friendly who always welcome u and make u feel like home. The room is ancient Vietnamese-style with wooden furniture which is interesting. U can get free breakfast while staying and they have a good menu with traditional Vietnamese noodles as well as western food for those who cant handle new things. I really loved it. I mean, I like to stay in small hotel that is quiet without a lot of people with friendly staffs who remember who u r and r friendly to u. I felt like home. I like it better than big and luxurious hotel like Sheraton which is fancy and expensive and too busy all the time. Anyway, my girlfriend and I had a good time at Thang Long hotel and we really recommend it for everyone, especially those who want to live somewhere that feels like home.

This hotel was booked for my sister and I by my daughter, who lives in Ho Chi Minh City and was impressed by the friendly welcome she received and the authentic Vietnamese style for such a great price. We were impressed too, and had a great stay there. A tall narrow hotel, typical Vietnamese architecture, it is just round the corner from the main street in the city, and we had a great view of the river. Staff could not do enough to help us, and the smiles of the receptionists and security staff will stay with us a long time. We were also pleased with the free internet access. Our luggage was stored free of charge while we spent a few days in Cambodia, and we had no trouble re-booking the room for when we came back. We had the VIP suite with a little room with tea and coffee etc, beautiful furniture embellished with dragons, bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower. All for 50 dollars a night between us! Yes, the beds are a bit hard but it is a fact of life that Vietnamese like hard beds, and we had lots of soft pillows. Everything was very clean, and a good choice for breakfast. Excellent value for money.

Hotel is in the middle of the city, for $24 per night it's a bargain.Has cable TV, air-con, a good shower. Friendly staff. Breakfast was one of the best for cheap accommodation in Vietnam - with a view to the river from the dining room too! Only one hitch beds are really hard and a bit small if you are a 'large' couple...but you get used to that. Very impressed.

I arrived late - 2am - and the metal shopfront door was rolled shut. A few pushes of the buzzer finally brought the door up and from that point on, I enjoyed my stay at the Thang Long. Good location - close to the river and the old town shopping district. Friendly staff. Decent room for the price. I originally tried to book the An An based on Lonely Planet reviews. It was unavailable, and this was offred as an alternative. Very happy with the choice.

The Thang Long is our favourite place to stay in Ho Chi Minh City….it is central – just around the corner from the Sheraton and the Caravelle, a couple of minute’s walk from the river and a few minute’s walk from the Tax Department Store, which has a good supermarket on the 1st floor that also sells alcohol, including a good range of international wines at very reasonable prices. Yes, the rooms, furnishings and and facilities are a bit dated (eg; the TV is one of the old box kind) and the beds are of the more firmer kind, but they are very clean and everything works – aircon, wall fan, cable TV with plenty of channels, mini-bar, safe, coffee/tea-making facilities, bath with overhead shower and plenty of hot water (although pressure can be slow). We always book one of the two so-called “VIP” Suites, which are probably 40 plus square metres, which includes a little sitting room with a coffee table and the kettle, etc. These rooms also have a good view over the street. The staff are very friendly, helpful and efficient and speak reasonable English and the breakfast is pretty good value – a range of Vietnamese dishes or eggs, baguettes and cheese. During our most recent stay, their rooftop restaurant where breakfast is usually served was closed for renovations, but they had arranged with the Dong Do Hotel (directly across the road) to provide the same breakfast for Thang Long guests. We wouldn’t bother looking for anywhere else to stay, as long as we could get the VIP Suite – great value at US$50 per night, including breakfast.
