I just got home from a week in HCMC at the Saigon River Botique Hotel (SGR) and already thinking of when I can return.

SGR is conveniently located in a safe area and there are a number of good restaurants within walking distance. The hotel staff is simply delightful and soon seem like old friends. Not only do they go out of their way to help, but provide a wealth of information on all aspects of Vietnam and HCMC in particular. They are familiar with the surroundings and can provide very good recommendations on what to see and where to eat. If you need to find a particular place, they can always provide accurate directions.

Unlike hotels in Hong Kong, SGR has larger rooms at lower prices. I had a room that was actually quite large and I did not feel squeezed for space at all. The room overlooked the main street (Mac Thi Buoi) so there was some traffic noise in the early evening, but it wasn't a hinderance to getting a great night's sleep. The bed was large and comfortable -- not too soft as is the custom in many hotels.

The room had a nice TV with great cable channels. The A/C worked well. The bathroom was quite large and the shower was fine. Water pressure was a tad bit low and sometimes the water wasn't as hot as I usually like it, but it wasn't uncomfortable and I saw no reason to ask for a room change because of it.

Housekeeping did a very good job keeping the room clean and they adopted to my habit of sleeping late and having my room cleaned after lunch. The hotel has a laundry service that is really good. They can return your clothes the same day even though they don't pick up the dirty clothes until late in the morning.

My room did have a small balcony though I never used it. I did like the fact that when there were downpours you could open the door to the balcony and get a nice fresh breeze.

WiFi was surprising good. Signal and speed sometimes degenerated in the late evening for a few hours, but at all other times it was amazingly fast.

I didn't try the breakfast so cannot comment on that. It would be nice if they had breakfast 24 hours, but I know it's a dream -- never seen a botique hotel that had.

The room had a mini-bar well-stocked with various drinks, though the snacks were really limited. However, one time I needed a late snack and asked where the nearest 7-11 was, and the receptionist quickly offered to go and buy whatever I wanted. People at SGR from owners to staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful.

The hotel provides an airport pick-up and drop-off service that they arrange with a third party. Now, any experienced traveler knows these services are more expensive than hailing a cab yourself. Still, I found it to be worth it. First of all, I didn't have to go out in the rain / heat to look for a taxi and deal with not only language issues, but also worrying about having proper local currency. The service has a car at your doorstep at the appointed time and if things are delayed they will patiently wait. The cars they use are bigger and cleaner than a normal taxi and the drivers speak ok English. So, yeah, it does cost about $7 more than a regular taxi, but if $14 (round trip) is going to break your travel budget and drive you into poverty, shouldn't you just be staying home and watching cartoons on TV instead anyhow?

I'm looking forward to my return to HCMC and staying at Saigon River Botique Hotel.

Your review was very generous, so many thanks for that. We do aim high and always care for our guests, but sometimes things just don't run true, which is a reflection of life we could do without I guess. Was interested that you mentioned that the room size was good, especially as I have just been watching a cable TV program on boutique hotels, many of which are enviably cool and designer orientated, but was amazed at how small many of the rooms were. Is this one less thing to worry about? And yes it is nice to open the balcony doors when there is a tropical downpour and if you were still with us, this would have been a frequent afternoon event, best enjoyed inside and definitely not on a motor bike, the most common form of transport in. SG. I swear the hotel is a living beast which needs to be tweeted nurtured and loved and our handy man plays an important role making sure everything is ok. Sorry for the lack of water pressure in your room, as well as for the water not being really hot. I believe at that time we had a pump failure on our roof top and a replacement part had to be tracked down. As with the quirkiness of the building, not all rooms were affected. I remember you were a late eater and really we could have managed that, if you had requested a later sitting. Maybe not a 24hr service, but I am sure we could have found a mutually agreeable time. Will guarantee that, if you let us know on your return. Many thanks!

The best! This sweet little hotel has the perfect location — easy walking distance to shops, spas, museums, historical sites, the Saigon River, and restaurants — and the staff here are . . . the best! Every person on staff is fabulously welcoming, friendly, cheery, and competent. Sam, the manager, is a marvel! He is the practical heart and kindly soul that keeps everything going so beautifully. (Plus he has the most terrific wife and most adorable baby in the country!) And others, like Nhu at the front desk, are amazing! From the housekeeping crew (Hoa and Thuy) to the night security guys (Thanh and Tu) to the folks (Co Muoi and Anh) cooking and serving tasty breakfast on the lovely, leafy rooftop terrace, everyone at this hotel is terrific. Rooms are clean and bright. The hotel feels like home, and a guest feels like family. This year was the second time I’ve stayed there, and I’ll be back. Wonderful hotel!

The Hotel is very central to the main centre and the Saigon River. The staff are welcoming and friendly. Thanks Natalie and Jason. Generally feels a safe place to walk at night. locals are friendly when you make the contact. Overall a nice Hotel to stay if your staying a few days. Only issues was the limited Wifi internet, so I was unable to use my laptop.

Thank you for your kind and positive review and for the encouragement to our staff. It is a good and safe area to stay in, noting the increase in petty crime in the back packer area, despite numerous arrests. Sorry that you had problems with the Wifi and can only presume that you mentioned this to our staff. Sam the hotel manager has an IT back ground and is often complimented on his ability to sort problems. The Internet can be generally tricky and the power supply can affect this service too, but have to say that the Internet in Vietnam runs rings around the service provided in neighboring countries, having just been traveling there myself. Still I am am sorry for your inconvenience, but also a little surprised that you had as much loss of service as you expressed. Usually this is only short term, but fully understand how annoying this can be. Many thanks for coming to stay.

I have lived in Vietnam for ten years in seven different houses. Several of these houses had plumbing that was not properly installed and thus caused bathrooms or entire houses to stink at times for seemingly no reason. Further research cased me to learn about P-Traps, exhaust vents, and other basic plumbing design. This hotel unfortunately was built without proper plumbing. The first room I was in stunk to high heaven, even the staff was repulsed by it. The second room had incense burning and smelt better, but in the morning, I noticed that I could hear the floor drain when I used the sink and suddenly, there was a smell of excrement coming into the bathroom without me having used the toilet. Further inspection showed that the fans in the bathroom were either disabled or turned off, a sign of a cover-up or hasty attempt to solve a problem they didn't understand. (Fans can suck in even more sewer smells into the room)

Bottom line, there are serious health issues with this hotel. SARS was spread in-part due to improper plumbing. I ran out as quickly as I could, as I take my health serious and am very sensitive to these issues. The owner and management denied everything and acted like there was no problem. However, the staff knows about this. They commented that some rooms smell worse than others. The Australian-Vietnamese owner likely is in denial, hasn't fully investigated the root cause of the smells, or is actively trying to cover them up. This is probably very expensive to fix, so they are going to avoid that drastic measure as long as they can.

Other than the dangerous health concerns, the hotel is in a good location, has had some nice attention to detail not commonly seen in lower-end hotels, and shows pride of ownership. It is just a shame that whoever installed the plumbing was not properly overseen. I hope that they can fix it.

Bottom line, if you value your health, don't stay here. Find another cheap hotel, there are plenty downtown.

One can buffeted around by the fast an furious pace of huge 24hr happening city and SG is no acceptation, so one should never feel assured or complacent about what every you do. In the week this disturbing review was written we were also reviewed in the UK paper The Guardian, where we were listed in the top ten best places to stay in Saigon. I contemplated not responding to this purely nasty review, particularly bearing in mind that the reviewer stayed two nights with us, ate two breakfasts and then physically assaulted our staff as he left without paying for any aspect of his bill. The review expressed that the Australian/Vietnamese owner accepted no responsibility for the issues being addressed, but what I witnessed was that he was at somewhat of a loss as to what was happening, bearing in mind you aggressively snacked the phone from the receptionist, without my partner gleaning any prior information about the circumstances and then you proceeded to berate him about your concerns without allowing him being able to console you, or to make right in any way the problem at hand. I am much more volatile than my partner, so your fortunate that your now not having ear surgery, as to be honest you deserved no care. Now I am not for one minute denying there was a problem, but also need to stay that the staff you spoke with were trainee staff and really still lack full knowledge of all aspects of the hotel and how to handle such issues, especially under pressured circumstances. One can read a great number of positive reviews about the hotel and none has ever brought their own personal knowledge of sewers into their review as much as you or if ever in fact. I am sure you will agree with me that the rainy season challenges all drainage systems to the extreme in all tropical countries. We have never had an issue such as you have raised, to this point and we have aromatherapy products in all rooms not to cover up smells, as basically that never works, but simply to be there for our guests well being, which you never allowed yourself time to either observe or understand. The extreme weather we experienced during your stay which nearly matched your rage, dropping massive amounts of rain and apparently caused a blockage somewhere between the building and the hotel itself. I agree with you (again) that many building standards in Vietnam are still emerging from Third World standards and are far from perfect unfortunately. I know as I have been involved with other projects and other investments and why I am not totally grey or mental I am not sure, after battling to raise these standards. I hate guests leaving, as we have so many charming ones and I hate it more when guest leave feeling unhappy, so I am really sorry about the whole situation. I am sure there is no risk that you will return so we can bring joy to your life, but really think it best that you choose elsewhere just the same. In what ever way you felt circumstances were not good for you simply does not justify your behavior towards my staff who are delightful young people finding their way in their careers and without doubt really questing to please at all times, given the chance. We can fix our plumbing, but know you will battle with your personal demons for much longer, until you learn that care comes in many ways and is always best a two way thing.

Stayed October 2015. Was upgraded to room with two double beds on the first floor. Lovely room with all the amenities anyone could ask for. Free wifi which was fast but did need a couple of 'router' resets during my stay but once requested the staff immediately sorted it out. Satellite tv with plenty of channels. Huge bathroom and toilet with a fantastic shower. Air conditioning was a little noisy but the roof fan was adequate at night so could dispense with the ac. The lack of double glazing meant there was considerable street noise during the day. The staff were very friendly and extremely efficient. All of the requests I made were actioned quickly. Just a pity that the rooftop cafe and bar was not open in the evening as advertised on other websites because it would have been an ideal place for an evening meal and drinks. I would certainly recommend this hotel for single or couples visiting HCMC.

Thank you for your positive review, by suspect your a warm and generous traveler who makes the most of situations and trigger good responses from everyone, as your a carer too. Your right in noting it is a room with all the facilities one could wish for. It was once two rooms and we splurged and joined them together and as well moved the whole front wall of windows forward too and maybe we should have splurged more and double glazed the windows, but suspect the splurge bucket was getting a bit low in funds at the time. A/C's are almost essential for life in the tropics and I love to step into a cool room with low humidity, but they do let you down from time to time, despite being well maintained. Sometimes simply the fan starts to slightly come out of alignment and sets up annoying noise, so suspect that is what happened during the stay. It have not had any more issues since it was serviced, so trust it will not betray us again and my apologies for any inconvenience it caused you. I am proud of our staff, but have to say I am proud if our guests too, who almost without exception are good travelers who are warm and happy to engage with our team, who generally have had few privileges of travel themselves, but do have an eagerness to learn and a nature to care. I miss our night service in our roof top terrace cafe, as it was so nice up there in the evening with the retractable roof open to the skies and wish we could still offer that service, but to be honest many guests choose to go out in the evening to explore the huge variety of eating options nearby, so there were only the few occasions when guests would choose to eat in. However we recently catered for a party of thirty for a regular guest which was wonderful, as he included staff and management as guests, making it a fun night and a night where staff could also develop professionally. Hope we can welcome you back in the near future.

Simply loved this hotel! Service is great. It is clean. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Location - safe, secure and easily, accessible ( public transport...shopping area...mosques). The rooms are cosy, and comfortable. Wifi - excellent. Views from rooftop restaurant - simply spectacular. You should give it a try.
I chose this hotel because it is conveniently close to central mosque and halaal restaurants.

I was sorry that I did not have the opportunity to meet you whilst you were a guest at Saigon River Hotel. I have always been very proud of our staff and with time they have very much taken a stance of ownership in their individual roles. I was very pleased to hear that without hesitation they we are able provide for your dietary needs etc, at a significant time of your spiritual calendar. You really raised and awareness for us, not only in regards to your dietary needs etc, but also that we have, in the past focused on the hotel being well located to many historical buildings, museums and the ultimate in establishments for retail therapy. I feel very remiss that we had never addressed spiritual needs and places of worship. You are correct in that there is a mosque one street away and also several Halal restaurants and Notre dame Cathedral is just also walking distance. Hindu and Buddhist Temples are also conveniently located and should you just want a tranquil park to relax in, or hug a tree, early planners did well in providing a significant number of green spaces to service your needs. Traveling is such a special privilege and provides special opportunities to meet and experience cultural differences. It was a pleasure having you stay at our hotel and thank you for sharing your culture with us, importantly adding a depth to the services we provide. Hen gap lai - See you again!

I stayed here 4 years ago and was very happy, hence our stay again this year. This is still the best value in District 1. Our flight arried in Saigon at 10AM and when we arrived at the hotel at 11AM our rooms were ready! After 24 hours of traveling it was so nice to have a hot shower as soon as we arrived. The service here is attentive and breakfast is fresh and tasty. The addition of the travel service in the lobby is fantastic and they helped solve a little "bump" we had in ongoing accomodations.

I stayed in this hotel room 602 for 3 nights from 12-15 Nov’18. The location is good, staff are very friendly, breakfast is not a buffet but a selection from a menu. Room size was good and bed linen was clean and fresh.

I stayed in room 602. This room really needs renovation. The bathroom had no window, ventilation or even an exhaust fan. The only way the heat and stench from the bathroom can escape is through the room!! This room should not be rented. They had a liquid bath soup with very strong smell that was strong enough to over power the bathroom stench. The air conditioner wasn’t good. They promised to repair but it was still the same. Anyway I kept the window open all the time even when I went out due to the smell coming out of the bathroom. I waited to leave the hotel to get a real good shower. The wooden floor lining was already decaying with slit holes. I watched a full sized cockroach coming out of the hole. I killed it and left it under the chair for the Housekeeping to see. The next day they left an insect spray in my room which indicated they are aware of the problem.

I chose this hotel due to its 5* TripAdvisor rating. So I assume the other rooms should be ok. Please don’t stay in room 602.

Spent 2 weeks here at this hotel for a base for several trips and tours around the area.
Check in was good and very helpful staff very relaxed and informative with an excellent command of English.
My Room was very clean and comfortable and was kept this way during my stay by 2 excellent Maids water and toiletries topped up daily with fresh towels everyday.
the staff have To be applauded for the dedication the show in dealing with any question you have regrading the hotel and the surrounding area. The hotel can help you organise trips and tours and give you some good tips on where to go on an evening out.

Breakfast was Excellent although a little limited in choice the service and quality of the food was high. but my No1 favourite has to be the Banana Pancakes freshly cooked and drizzled with Honey mmmmm

The location of the hotel is very central for all the major attractions including the opera House and the walking Street .
From day 1 to day 13 this hotel matched and well exceeded my expectations for the price i paid let alone what it would have cost in many other hotels.
100 % No hesitation in recommending this hotel and its excellent team of staff for anyone looking for a relaxed small hotel in Saigon
