My husband and I have just spent 12 days at this hotel while on business in Hanoi. The hotel is situated right in the Old Quarter which does make it noisy, especially as we had a room on the street front(with a tiny balcony to watch the amazing street scenes below). We did ask to be moved from the 2nd to the 4th floor and that did help with the noise factor.
The rooms are large, clean and light and decorated with amazing, traditional Vietnamese furniture.
The staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful and we felt sad to leave on our final day.
The breakfast serves traditional Vietnamese food or a limited range of western food - fresh fruit, toast and eggs, but it is adequate, especially when Hanoi has so many fantastic places to eat.
The other real plus is that the room had internet connection.

We walked in off the street and stayed 3 nights in this hotel. Staff were helpful and professional.
Our room was at the front of the building with our own balcony. Room was quite large with lots of local pots and cabinets as decoration.
Breakfast was average.
$35 a night was well worth it considering the excellent location in the old quarter.

Stayed in a triple room for 4 nights.

As I travelled with two toddlers, I played safe by booking into the 3-star Majestic Salute for my first 3 nights. I checked out this hotel myself when I was in Hanoi and moved into this one for the fifth night (I spent one night on the Dragon Pearl Junk)

Compared to the Majestic Salute, Hong Ngoc's staff are not as fluent in English, has less lavish breakfast buffet (nobody to make ommelets and noodles on the spot), no Gym, Jacuzzi, massage, no tea making facility.

But, Hong Ngoc's rooms are much larger and cheaper, totally quite (I was staying on the 8th floor, away from the street) staff more eager (and more interesting). To make up for the absense of tea making facility, they gave us a kettle of hot tea and hot water (for us to make milk for our toddlers) everyday.

If I ever go back to Hanoi, I will certainly stay in the Hong Ngoc again. Its facilities and the service are good enough even for travellers with toddlers.

We had a great experience here - the rooms were clean and the service was very helpful and friendly. Just make sure you ask for a room away from the main street!

This hotel has really unfriendly staff. I'm travelling with a groep and they constantly asked me where my friend was when I wanted to get into the room. On top of that they told me several times I could not be in that room. At night they didn't bother to open the front door either, even though they saw me and heard me knocking, only opened after my fourth try knocking! BAD SERVICE!

Clean mid priced hotel right in the Old Quarter. Rooms are smallish but quiet despite the noise of the streets outside. Rooms and on-suite very clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Nice restaurant although the best food is to found on the street at a fraction of the price. Yep, no regrets.

I stayed at the Hong Ngoc Hotel 2 in Nov 2006 for a total of 3 nights.
I paid $45 which is not an incredible value in Hanoi but I arrived during the APEC conference with all political leaders in town and I was not unfortunate to find a room in a decent place.
Here are my comments:
•Service: I asked to have a driver to pick me at the aiport ($15), efficient, helpful guy. Same thing for the return. The front desk was usually helpful and everybody spoke English enough to communicate and for me to get the info I requested. However, the last days of my stay, I left my backpack that I would pick up later from my room, someone took my plane tickets (I had put them with my magazines in one of the pockets of my bag. Ok a bit clumsy of my part. When I realized this and kindly ask for the magazines and tickets, I was screamed on by the agent at the desk. I had to insist to go back to the room to see if the items fell from my bag. The guy did not want to ask the staff. I knew that in Asia that losing one’s temper is not helpful but I really insisted and went to ask everybody I saw in the hotel about these tickets. It is after 30 minutes that one of the cleaners came to apologize and gave my magazines with the tickets inside. I guessed this guy wanted to read English papers and did not want to steal my plane tickets. However, the handling of the situation by the front staff was terrible as they treat me of liar even after the cleaner gave my stuff back
•The room: quite big, TV with many international channels, good AC, nice size, comfortable bed – not king -, nice traditional Vietnamese wood décor. Very small and basic bathroom though. All was very clean. The only problem: noise; the window is over one of the busiest streets of the old quarter. It was okay because I always travel with earplugs. Beware of noise if that hotel.
•Food: buffet breakfast included (nice +). Food is okay.
•Location: just perfect in the old quarter: steps away from the lake, all nice little restaurants and all international bars and travel agencies.

Conclusion: could be a good hotel, big rooms are not worth more than $35 if Hanoi, so don’t pay more except if all is booked. Very well located. Don’t expect much from the staff, put all important belongings in the safe at all times.

We stayed here for 4 nights in December and were quite happy with our room. Although the room was small, the bed was big (superior room) shower hot and good water pressure and the location is great. We had a room at the back so it was very quiet. Suggest you don't get room directly above breakfast room or you will be woken at 5am as they set things up. Breakfast was the samw each day but adequate. We paid $31 a night and thought it was great value.
