We have chosen Muong Thanh Grand Ha Long hotel for our family's post-Tet holiday: The first comfort when setting foot in the hotel is the hotel's cleanliness, the attentiveness of the reception staff, and the specialties no matter what . It was a small group of guests, but we were personally welcomed by the hotel director himself with a very friendly smile. During our stay here, we were very satisfied with the amenities, the delicious food, the friendly attitude, the politeness of the leaders and hotel staff.... we will come back in the future. Next steps when arriving in Ha Long. I would like to take this opportunity to wish good luck, happiness and prosperity to all the staff and staff of the hotel.

The whole of Ha Long was just about booked out for the weekend but we managed to get a luxury suite at the Huong Thanh. We had a wonderful view over the bay, two rooms with large television in each, desk, lounge suite, coffee table, wonderful spa bath and one of the best showers we'd encountered on our trip. The plan was to spend one night here, the next two nights on a cruise of the bay then return to the hotel for a night before flying out to Cambodia. Our agent had booked us a cheaper room for our return night. However the hotel upgraded us so that we could keep the same suite on our return at no extra cost. We were also able to leave our bags and have our laundry done while we were away. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful. The breakfast was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We asked room service to bring us tonics to go with our gin and they brought an ice bucket, glasses, salt and limes as well. They organised an expert driver and car to take us to Hanoi airport.

We stayed one night for business while traveling from Moncai to Haiphong. The hotel is your standard 2 star (Western)/3 star (Asian) hotel. Looks like they cater to groups as the hotel had a large number of tour buses outside and was totally full of Koreans.

The room rates are only for twin (two) beds. If you want a double (one) bed, they charge you more money. Staff wasn't very friendly about this.

Breakfast is above average for the area.

The hotel seems to go by different names, either Muong Thanh Ha Long or Muong Thanh Grand.

Pros: Overall good new hotel. We had good bargain on room rate. Convenient location with medium size underground parking. Rooms overlooking the beach and town. Staff are very nice and helpful.

Cons: Unfinished areas (gym, staircase, wall paper in corridor...) see picture

I stayed here for 4 nights and loved the overall experience. Room on the 11th floor where i stayed was spacious and overlooks the city. Food is good and staff are generally friendly and helpful. The front desk ladies helped in finding solution to all my needs except for the internet which didn't work occasionally (I was told later it was a nationwide problem as the sharks snipped the undersea cable again!!)

This hotel was in short, awful. A group of 4 of us stayed here for 1 night as our Halong Bay cruise was cancelled due to poor weather. The exterior and lobby of the hotel look quite beautiful, but do not be deceived.

We booked one of the top tiers of room in this alleged 5 star hotel, and were greeted with a huge overly spacious but empty room with brutally stained carpets, a stench, and joint buds (marijuana) on the floor upon entering. It seems someone had a party in our room before we arrived and the staff didn't care to clean it. We informed the front desk this would not do, and they were quite apologetic. They switched us to another room down the hall. The room was much cleaner and better taken care of, but overall very basic. The wifi was basically broken it was so slow, which is odd as every few rooms seems to have it;s own router.

We ate dinner there that night, and 3/4 of us could not finish our meals. The dining room is huge and quite flashy, with an army of staff to serve seemingly no one. The food was terrible overall. We ordered pho, spaghetti, salads, and french onion soup. If you value your life avoid the french onion soup, we believe it may have been sentient.

The breakfast buffet was equally poor. The quality and selection of food was not good.

Upon checking out in the morning, there was probably 70 screaming Vietnamese children rampaging around the lobby. The place was an absolute zoo.

We would not recommend this hotel at all.

Located away from the noises of the city and yet closer to all attractions. A beautifully built Hotel with all amenities. The views from the the rooms are excellent; however at places these are abstracted by the new constructions being done along the bay. Small food eateries mostly catering for Vietnamese food are at walking distance; however, main shopping areas are at a distance requiring hired or own transport. The staff is helpful and courteous but lacks fluency in English. Restaurants have great menus and cater for different tastes. However, for Halal food; one has to make some efforts.

I stayed a night in the Hotel. Probably the best in the town. It is newly constructed with all latest facilities. Spacious, clean and well laid out rooms and washrooms. Very efficient and helping staff. It is 6 to 7 kilometers from the main town and you need to cross the bai chai bridge to move into the town. If you have time, a walk or a jog to the main town along the bay would prove to be a life time experience. Great place to stay in.

It's a value for money hotel for short stay, especially its short walk distance from the wharf so you don't need the trouble to call taxi. The bathroom was a bit old fashion but decently clean for most. Breakfast was better than expected for size of the hotel. Room was clean and Wi-Fi is available for free everywhere within the hotel compound. If you are tired, try the massage service on the 3rd floor. It's as good value as the hotel.

We came here because on Expedia we found info that pets are allowed. After writing them an email, calling the Sales office and stating in our booking that we travel in a mini chihuahua and receiving a confirmation of the reservation, we launched on our trip here. We decided to stay for 4 days, since we wanted to explore the area, yet the weather was pretty miserable, so 2 days would have been enough. There are only a couple of decent restaurants in the area and Halong Bay really needs to work on the infrastructure to attract repeater tourists. Unless you are on a cruise ship, there is really nothing to do.

Check-in.
We were greeted by the staff who started shaking when they saw our pet in his travel bag. We showed all the info we had with the confirmation and info from Expedia website, so after a short phone call the Receptionist agreed to check us in. It seems that we were the only Westerners in the hotel as the staff could barely understand us.

The Room.
Our room was well-appointed, with an extremely comfortable bed, everything was new, the bathroom was spotless and there were English channels like HBO that we ended up watching while it was raining outside.

Food & Beverage.
On our first night, when we finally checked in, we realised that we are starving, but it was already 10pm, so the restaurant was closed and we never made it to breakfast, as it is served till 9.30 (why?). Room service was actually fine and we enjoyed our dinner in the suite.

Fitness & pool
Their gym, though has only basic equipment was fine, as long as you switch on the A/C when you enter, as it is usually off. I didn't know that the first time and there is usually no staff, as the guys also work as Safeguards by the pool. We enjoyed the pool, although it was usually pretty busy. A nice pool bar would have been great.

Karaoke.
We attempted once to enter hotel's Karaoke bar, but the staff took one look at us and said that it's full - I guess it is only for the locals.

Check-Out.
The check-out was the strangest experience of all. The night staff at the Reception needs professional training - the man who works there saw us once with Chico, even though he was in my LV bag and started telling us that we are not allowed into the hotel, when we have already been living there for a couple of days. When we told him that we already live there and that he should check our reservation he got extremely angry and wouldn't let us get into the elevator, which we finally did after having to raise our voice and telling to get his information straight.
On the day before our departure we called the Front Desk to ask for Day Use of our room. The lady on the other end said that there would be no problem and that we would have to pay 30% of the Official Rack Rate -which was fine. That same night, at 9.30 pm the circus started - the Night Receptionist, the same guy who seemed to have a problem with us started calling us and telling us that we need to pay 50% of the official rate if we want to stay in the room till 6 pm. After I told him that another staff member already informed me that it would be another rate, he got angry and hung up the phone. He called back in 30 minutes and started accusing me that I didn't talk to anyone, then he said that the staff member made a mistake and it's 50%, then he started asking me 3 times to repeat the story which I told him before - who I called, who I talked to, what did I say, what did they answer and the like - like it was an interrogation. He then hung up again, and we thought it was the end of it. It is not that we didn't want to pay, but since they said one amount, that's what we were going to pay - as a principle - and why should we pay for the mistake that the hotel staff did? The guy did not stop there though, he called again at 10.30 pm (!) to continue the interrogation and nearly screaming that we have to come downstairs and pay it right away. After which we were forced to hang up, because it was becoming ridiculous.

The next morning, as we were heading out for breakfast, we decided to clarify the situation and approached the Front Desk. The lady that we talked to looked shocked and after a short trip to the Back Office, she told us that we never spoke to anyone at the Reception the previous afternoon and that we were lying about the 30%. She did not speak English very well, but she kept on repeating that we never spoke to anyone and that there was no one talking to us. When we asked for her to check our call log, which should be in the system, she refused to and said that this information is not available. After that we just left.
Funny thing is though, that when we were checking out, they charged us 30% that we initially talked about. What that whole situation was, we still can't understand, but it was far from pleasant. If the hotel wants to attract International visitors, it better work on it's staff and how they treat the guests - we were paying good money to stay there, and yet it felt as if we were visiting the Staff members for free, and it was a favour from them to us to let us stay.

Really bad experience with the Front Desk just overshadowed the otherwise nice stay that we had there.
