Detailed Reviews
The Shangri-La Chiang Mai Hotel was a beautiful hotel with very kind staff. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. My room was great with a beautiful view of the pool and the hotel property. The hotel is very large, with great amenities. The pool was very large with a waterslide and great hot tub. There were also a lot of chairs to lounge on, which was very relaxing after a long day. The hotel room service and restaurants were very good. The food came fast and was very tasty, and the staff delivering the food was very patient and respectful. They also had an
extremely large spa and a pond. The desk staff was very helpful with check in and made check out extremely easy. They took my bag as I got off the elevator and made the whole process easy. The staff was excellent and was very patient with me, answering all of my questions and being kind. They also had security coming into the hotel, making me feel very safe. This process was very easy and fast. The breakfast was also great. They had many options for different cultures and for people with dietary issues. The hotel was gorgeous and big, and in an excellent
location. There were a lot of stores and nail salons near the hotel, and it was in walking distance of an incredible market, with great, authentic food and a lot of souvenirs. I highly recommend staying at this hotel since it is so accommodating and gorgeous. If you do decide to invoke a stay here, try to book a room that has a view of the pool and ask for a room with a balcony. The balcony was a great addition to the room and had chairs and grass, allowing me to enjoy the relaxing feeling of sitting outside while I was in the comfort of my own room.

This is a lovely place to stay. The hotel is quite beautiful with many facilities. The lounge on the 11th floor is a lovely place to relax. Breakfast is served here in relaxed conditions, with the choice of a buffet style meal or a la carte. The service is excellent and unobtrusive. In the evening Happy Hour is a wonderful time to have a pre-dinner aperitif with a good selection of snacks.
This hotel is in a good location, so it is possible to walk to many of the sites. They are happy to suggest tours and will book them if required.
We really enjoyed our stay here.

The hotel is lovely, if beginning to fray ever so slightly at the edges, with beautiful outdoor space, large swimming pool with lots of fun water activities for kids (and childlike adults) and an excellent and serene spa.
The service provided by the hotel staff was truly world class. I’d highly recommend booking a Horizon Club level room, especially if you might need help making plans while you’re in town.
Bow and George at the Horizon Club concierges desk truly went out of their way to ensure that we had the best possible stay, from first welcoming us at check in to providing advice and suggestions (pro tip: go to Khao Soi Khun Yai AKA Grandma’s Khao Soi for our favorite version of that dish, as recommended by Bow) to helping us book all of our activities for the week. I cannot say enough good things about our experience in the Horizon Club; the complimentary and delicious breakfast and cocktail hour were great, but the staff (including the gracious and friendly waitstaff, like Meen) made our time there really special.
Even the bellmen (especially Tom(?)) and reception staff were incredible, and always knew what plans we had made to help us along the way.
And if you’re ever planning to leave the hotel, a great night market is an easy five minute walk up the street and the Old City is a quick tuk tuk (or slightly longer stroll) away.

Stayed in Shangrali because it's closer to the activities and night market as compared to 137 and Dhara Dhevi which I both like very much. Despite its great location it is definitely dd and dated, which I understand they are currently carrying out renovation. Talking about renovation: when I booed the premium room with the hotel I was not informed that the hotel is currently carrying out renovation. But when I checked in I was told the 'normal' rooms are only available at the 3/F, which is the first level immediately above the hotel lobby. The 4/F to 10/F are alll closed for renovation. If I needed a quiet room on upper floor I have to pay extra for the rooms at the Club level which is the 11/F to 13/F; which in fact 'forcing' guests to upgrade THEMSELVES to their club floors paying 1/3 extra. Do NOT stay at the Shang in Chiang Mai, there are plenty of better, cheaper and more value for $$ hotels all around the city.

Dear HKG_Traveller2010, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. At the outset, I would like to express my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you have experienced upon check-in, and with regards to your unsatisfactory room assignment. We have been indeed conducting annual preventative maintenance on some floors, whose noise is mitigated by so called “buffer” floors which are kept empty. It therefore appears that there must have been a misunderstanding with my colleague at the front desk, who have tried to describe the exclusive benefits our Club floors, in case you would have preferred to stay on higher floors, and please kindly accept, once again, my apologies for the unnecessary confusion. HKG_Traveller2010, we truly value your loyalty and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our urban resort in the near future. Please, feel free to contact me directly, if there is anything I can do to assist you with. Yours sincerely, Gabriele Lombardo General Manager

Nice, spacious rooms with lots of amenities. Efficient travel desk. Huge garden and large swimming pool. Be informed that most of the day there is shade on most of the swimming pool area because of a high rise which is just next to the hotel. (It is very unfortunate that this building is on the South side of the hotel) One night I was woken up by a couple of very loud Chinese guests in the middle of the night. This hotel is very popular with Chinese tourists. Housekeeping is done very late in the afternoon. On 2 occasions my sieste was interrupted by housekeeping, despite the no disturb sign on the door, requesting free the room. This is not done. I don't understand why the rooms are cleaned so late in the afternoon.

Dear Patrick V, Thank you for your review following your recent stay at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai. On the outset, I truly regret to learn that you couldn’t fully enjoy your recent journey with us, due to some noise on the floor created by other guests, along with the shade of the building adjacent to our hotel, which inconvenienced your sunbathing experience. I fully understand your frustration and please kindly allow me to convey my sincerest apologies, for such unfortunate disturbance. Also, I am very concerned to read your comments with regards to the unsatisfactory service provided by our housekeeping team, and please, kindly accept, once again my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused. Excellent Hotel and well trained staff. We found a Birthday cake on one day and Gluten free cake and flowers on our anniversary after a trip to the Botanical Gardens.
Due to Covid the hotel was flexible with provision of F&B and as occupancy increased the a la carte breakfast was moved to the main dining to cope with the guest numbers, all the time the staff coped admirably with the impositions of social distancing. Sanitation stations were on every lobby, inside the elevators and security at the entrances to the hotel was very welcome.
Ian Cotting, the ADFB, made a point of visiting all guests over breakfast and around the pool. This is a very customer / guest focused hotel.
Large grounds, an excellent pool with a water slide and children activities (plus the usual painted Elephant Parade statues dotted around) make this a hotel suitable for guests with or without children.

Checked in Thursday evening (13 February 2020). At 0900 the following day, loud and persistent hammering noise started. I tolerated this for six hours and eventually complained to reception. I was offered an alternative room. Before accepting, involving repacking and re-unpacking suitcases, I asked when the work would be complete. I was told 5pm (1700) and specifically asked if this would happen the following day. I was assured there would be no further work or noise after 5pm. I chose to stay in the room. 0900 the next day the hammering started again and continued through to 5pm, this was repeated on my third day. I sent an e-mail to the General Manager (Gabriele Lombardo) who has not had the decency to respond nor the courtesy to even acknowledge my e-mail. I then left this hotel. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone, particularly business people who may wish to work in their room. I also call upon the owners of the hotel to dismiss Gabriele Lombardo so a new General Manager can bring about the improvements necessary to justify the price.

Dear david_kerr_wl, On the outset, I am extremely disappointed to read this review as, as already clarified with you in my separate email sent to you yesterday, I never received your previous email, hence the reason why it has not been acknowledged. It was only after we received your second follow-up email, yesterday, that I have immediately responded to your comments. I am extremely sorry to find out that your recent stay with us has been disturbed by the noise generated by maintenance works we have been conducting and, please, kindly accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused. We stayed at the Shangri-La after staying in Bangkok as part of our honeymoon to Thailand.
This hotel was amazing, clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and attentive, the maid even folded my tee-shirt I sleep in when she turned down the beds. The food served was delicious, from the buffet breakfast to the Al a carte menu in the Kad Kafe.
When we got to the room, we had flowers, sparkling wine and chocolate waiting for us and rose petal bath too.
After bustling and busy Bangkok, we found this hotel the perfect place to relax and being close to Chiang Mai center, we found it easy to explore the old town.
This hotel knows how to deliver comfort and style, providing a level of service which was very warm, welcoming and attentive.
Thank you for making our stay and this part of our honeymoon perfect.

We booked this 5 star hotel in Chiang Mai based on our previous positive experience in other Shanthi -La hotels elsewhere. The property and room furniture are very old and the furniture were all falling a part. We arrived in the morning and the hotel offered our room around 9:30 AM; Great. We were asked to wait till the room was ready but when it was ready no one advised us. So we had to go and asked the reception. Although we were so pleased that the room was offered early, the customer service could have been better. Good central location. Walking distance from one the big night markets. It is a 5 star facility, like many other 5 star hotels in Thailand, Shangri-La also charge 10% service charge on food and drinks. Seems unfair for a 5star hotel to ask you to pay extra.

I think this was our fifth visit to Chiang Mai Shangri La and but for Covid, it would probably have been more. Make no mistake, this is a seriously good hotel which provides a wonderful experience with the friendly, efficient and very professional staff being responsible for this. From the minute we were met at the Airport to delivery back to the airport, everyone we encountered all contributed to our memorable stay.
First of all, the Covid precautions within the hotel were first class. No doubt this means additional tasks for the staff but we certainly felt very confident regarding the precautionary measures whilst in the hotel. Sadly some guests didn’t see the need to wear masks, use the gloves in the restaurant or follow the guidelines for the use of the lifts.
Check in was quick and easy as was checking out. Our room was well maintained on a daily basis by housekeeping ( who are rarely seen!) and the removal of certain items didn’t affect our stay at all.
Eating here is always a great experience! The danger is that the food is so good, it’s very tempting to eat too much! It was good to see the Executive Chef and to be able to have a brief conversation with him. We thoroughly enjoyed the seafood platter on the Friday evening which we considered very good value. We also had another meal with a selection of food from the a la carte menu but be warned, the portions are very generous indeed! I think the staff were surprised at how much we ate! Again very good value and very good service.
We have come to expect the very high standards available at this exceptional hotel and would like to express our thanks to all the staff for their work and dedication in difficult times.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Chiang Mai which will provide you with a great experience then look no further.
We shall return!

Derry, United Kingdom558 contributions237 helpful votesConsidering a stay at Shangri-La with family group. As there will be lots of clothes to wash, was wondering is there a launderette or some place that takes in washing nearby, to avoid high laundry bills at hotel. Anyone experience of these?
There is a great little laundry about 200m along the road. 40TB per kilo. Run by Mrs Moo!
6.30 am. However, there was 1 day where I need to go to Chiang Rai as early as 5am, the hotel was very kind to arrange complete set of breakfast box for us.
Dear Susan, Yes, we provide free WiFi in room and all public areas for our guests.
The room I booked came with transportation. It was super fancy and they were REALLY accommodating. Even brought an infant carseat for me to use.
