Built circa 1880, Club One Seven Chiang Mai, with its peaked roof and wide veranda porches, are a perfect example of an old-fashioned Thai style teak wood house that sits in a lush tropical garden. There's a real friendly ambiance that makes guests content to just spend time relaxing around the place particularly at one of the favored spots - overlooking the serene Ping River. For those just looking to unwind, read a book and use up as little energy as possible, this is certainly a place to consider. Club One Seven is a full service facility not just a guesthouse. Additional to the guesthouse there is a gym, swimming pool with jacuzzi jets, steam room, sauna, massage salon, internet tv room and cafe. Regular monthly party events are held on the 1st, 7th, 17th and 27th of the month as well as special holidays. Club One Seven Chiang Mai, is one of the more unusual places you will find designed for the gay male community.

This is my second visit , three years apart due to covid and I loved the place as much this time as the first.
The location is great, on the river, great place to start your day with a freshly cooked breakfast.
The staff really make this place nothing is too much trouble . They are always on hand to help and assist. The rooms are great and have retained the character of the original building. A refreshing change from modern generic hotels.
The sauna and steam room are open to non residents and means, especially for solo travellers, there are always guys to meet and chat with.
The bar serves freshly cooked food and serves drinks from 3pm onwards, all reasonably priced.
If you're in Chiang Mai, this really is a great place to stay

This place is absolutely worth it. Because they are clean and well maintained, some amenities are actually more beautiful than the price you pay. For example, the breakfast resto has a great view of the river. The accommodation is in a pretty good location. In the middle class community area Along with a delicious restaurant And convenient transportation all around.

Lovely hotel, and staff, my only issue was no hot water, and after a long day in Chiang Mai it’s nice to have a hot shower lol.

The bar is a little over priced and the pool area is a little sleezy.

But overall wasn’t a horrible situation. It’s a beautiful old Lanna property right on the river. The staff were friendly and helpful to say the least! I probably wouldn’t stay again simply based on the hot water situation

River Ping Palace is a place we would definitely stay at again. It is a wonderful experience of a traditional Thai teak house (150 years old). The riverside location is beautiful. It is just across the river and down from the Chiang Mai Sheraton. The view from your breakfast table is of a beautiful river and green trees. Very quiet, tropical location, excellent staff. They even hooked me up with a dentist for a teeth cleaning. The owner of the hotel also gives cooking classes so needless to say the menu at the on site restaurant is fantastic. The only drawback (and we found this at all Thai hotels) are the hard/firm beds and tall pillows. River Ping had better beds than many of the hotels we stayed at. The value was the best. We paid $35 per night for a standard room and that included breakfast. Daily laundry service is included. Esther will also act as a tourist agent and recommend and book excursions for you. Breakfast was great, they would always give us some of the left over desserts from the night before. The mango cheesecake is killer! Everyone should stay here, singles, straights, gays, families, couples, everyone! The place is awesome!

After glimpses of tropical living/accomodation in some other places so far, the River Ping Palace has topped every place we've ever stayed so far.
The friendly and relaxed atomsphere and hospitality to be felt from Esther and her staff was as comforting and amazing as the old mansion.
Charming and passionately maintained and located by the river-UNFORGETTABLE!!!!
Ellie & Peter (from Jan 2005) recommended us this place and we will definitely also recommend you further. Our children ranked here first too.
(although no pool) and it was very nice of them to put up the children inflatable pool especially for us.
Thank you River Ping Palace.

Exhausted from a night on the train, we arrived at the River Ping Palace, intending to stay for 2 nights. We were pampered in such a wonderful manner that even after 5 nights, it is hard to leave. Thank you Esther, our superwoman...the Queen of River Ping Palace for making our stay, excursions, etc, so perfect....and to the friendly and helpful staff and the delicious food.
Without a doubt, we are going back to River Ping Palace again.

River Ping Palace..above all the amazing hospitality and enthusiasm, have exceeded any expectations we had. The food is the best we have had anywhere in Thailand.
We loved every minute of our stay and will remember it forever. Especially Esther, she is The Palace.

I must admit, the River Ping Palace was a little more rustic than we'd expected, even after reading all the reviews online. That said, other facets of the stay more than made up for it.

We arrived mid afternoon on a Thursday, received our lovely cold drink and some nibblies and relaxed on the balcony or in our room for a few hours. We had the least expensive room (Deluxe) for the first few nights, and were upgraded to the most expensive (Suite) for our final two nights for free. The Deluxe room really is very small. But we weren't in Chiang Mai to spend it in our hotel room. We slept just fine with the mosquito zapper on and the netting down over our huge bed. (Yes, the hotel is by the RIVER. What do people expect with regard to mosquitos?)

The rooms are all teak wood. The bathrooms are probably not what most Westerners are used to. Electricly heated showers. The Deluxe room had a hand held spray-head, which you had to hold yourself to shower. Toilets are all fully western though. The shower in the suite was fixed, but still electrically heated. Sinks are cold water only. The suite is probably more than twice as big as the Deluxe room, and next time I'm in Chiang Mai, I will pay for the suite.

Take note, there are NO televisions. We didn't notice one bit. Right, now that the people travelling in pure luxury have stopped reading, onto the good stuff.

Everything you read about the food at the River Ping Palace. It's stunningly good. And the mango cheesecake really is as good as it's made out to be. We had it every night I think. Out of the 4 nights we stayed in Chiang Mai, we ate at the Palace 3 times for dinner, and every breakfast. The banana pancakes were also the best we had in Thailand.

Now, our host, Esther. On our first day (Sunday), she raced back from wherever she was to ensure that after dinner we headed into the city for the Street Walking markets, held only on Sunday nights. Every time we went into the city by ourselves, Esther or the staff organised a tuk-tuk for us and set the price for us. This is sort of significant, as we never managed to bargain the same price home as going into the city!

Esther speaks great english, is extremely friendly, funny, helpful, and always available for questions. We organised our one trekking day through Esther's contacts, and a day at a spa in the city also. Another thing to mention is that Esther provides free broadband internet at the Palace, very convenient.

The epitome of service for me was me mentioning that I was keen to find a gym to do a workout. Esther rang the gym where she went, and we both headed into the lovely D2 hotel gym. If I was ever after a more luxury, less real Thailand hotel in Chiang Mai, I think I'd go there! (sorry Esther!).

The river really is as lovely as the pictures show. A few other things, the River Ping Palace isn't in the middle of town, it's a good 50-100 THB tuk tuk ride in there. The daily laundry service isn't free, but about 10% of the price you pay in the top hotels. Esther also sent mail for us.

In summary, it's as close to a real experience of Thailand as most first time travellers probably want to get, while at the same time providing great service and unbelievably good food.

River Ping Palace is the kind of place I dream about on winter days at home in Tahoe. It is one of my favorite places to stay in all of Thailand. I love the antique charm of the old teak wood house with it's well maintained gardens and water features. The decor throughout is beautifully executed, a mix of antique charm with contemporary touches. From the time I arrived with my fiance, mother and aunt we were treated like royalty in the "palace" The staff was very welcoming carrying our luggage to our rooms and offering us a welcome fruit shake and local guide magazines as well as friendly answers to our many questions about the area. The rooms are beautiful, some looking out on the river and others onto the lush tropical garden. I have to mention the antique four poster beds, as well as being absolutely gorgeous they are the most comfortable I've found in my travels. Waking up to the "included" breakfast every morning was a real treat! Sitting on the peaceful river, enjoying my book while being served seasonal fruits, smoothies, omelettes, and a varying array of other daily goodies. My coffee cup was always full thanks to the attentive staff, it was definately a great way to start the day. The dinner experience was superb as well and seems to be a popular place among chiang mai locals. I was very impressed by the attention to detail from the table settings to the fruit carving. The ambiance at night is lovely with the red lanterns glowing over the river, always the perfect music mixing with the sound of the waterfalls. I loved the Tom Yum seafood soup and the Lab Gai, and no meal is complete without the mango Cheesecake!!! It's to die for! River Ping Palace is a place I will look forward to returning to every time I make it to Chiang Mai. I didn't want to leave! Many thanks to Ester and her staff for all her wonderful hospitality. Places like this are rarely found in life. It's a real treasure I will hold dear in my memories of Thailand.

Just call them, you have about 12 hours difference. Or try "Bali au Naturel", sunshine and nudity guaranteed

Is the pool area clothing optional? And does the pool area get lots of sun for tanning?
Answer from nick4nude

Officially no places clothing-optional, but many people around the pool and some on the balcony/restaurant by the river just go naked, no problem. It's also a sauna after all. Hardly any sun around the pool

There are nude theme party nights on the 1st, 7th, 17th and 27th of every month. As for the guesthouse area, you are welcome to be nude anywhere around the facilities however most people do wear some form of clothing, i.e. swim trunks. Nude sunbathing by the pool or out on the riverside deck is no problem at all. Make yourself at home!
