This sign was welcoming us at Tonnam Homestay on our way to our room. Yul's and Cecile's excellent homestay definitely fully deserves the word HOME which you will regret having to leave at some point. At Tonnam you will find a perfect mix of French elegance with Thai hospitality, of professionalism and relaxedness & flexibility. The homestay is spacious, with a swimming pool, spacious rooms, airco & fans, mosquito nets and a warm shower -we had the opportunity to try out 2 rooms even, both at the top floor with a cool open relaxation area. Foremost Yul and Cecile are two amazing hosts who are clearly living their passion and during our 5-night stay with them we enjoyed the warm embrace of this perfect homestay to the fullest. Love can be found in every detail at Tonnam Homestay: excellent fresh food adjusted to personal preferences, nice chats and big smiles of and laughs with the multilingual Yul and Cecile, our preferred strong coffee served while taking an afternoon break in our almost private hammock .... All this made us looking forward to going 'home' each day after our day trips. We definitely plan to return and recommend Tonnam Homestay warmheartedly.

Cecile and Yul, are wonderfull owners and operators, attention to detail, very classy rooms and clean bathrooms. We had two rooms from the 7th to 9th of September and it was the best decision we made. We arrived by train and Cecile was there to pick us up at the station, and had organized a very tasty lunch for us. Its very good value and the dinner we had the night before we left was the best meal we had in thailand.

This is the first time I have been to Chiangmai. I stayed in the city so it is different experience to stay in outskirts of city. Beautiful wooden tek house by the river, therefore there are many mozzies. They have awesome insect repellent for sale so it does just fine for me. Awesome hospitality I would say. It feels like home. Is better to rent a motor if you like to move around. Is more convenient that way. Cecile and Yui are really helpful and so as Pom. They are flexible too. I dont really enjoy western breakfast and they changed to thai-style for me without extra charges. Even prepare a small celebration for my birthday and gave me a bouquet of roses :)

Overall I enjoyed my 5d4n stay at Tonnam and will like to recommend anybody whom read this review.

Thanks Cecile, Yui, Pom and the other staffs :)

I thought long and hard before posting this review, but as Yul had said he wanted to have critique as well as compliments, here we go! Having read the rave reviews from previous guests and having lots of good contact with Cecile we were really looking forward to our 2 weeks at Tonnam.

The rooms are situated around a tiled pool, set in lovely gardens and there is a sauna and a steam room. There is a large jacuzzi on the pool terrace which takes about half an hour to heat up, so no spontaneity there, then. Our room had a jacuzzi bath on its terrace. Personally I'd have preferred a decent shower in the room and perhaps somewhere to sit on the private terrace, but that's just my opinion.

Breakfast is served on a large wooden deck overlooking the river and is good and copious. We had a delicious meal prepared by the staff one evening and another time our friend helped prepare the evening meal aided by Yul.

Yul kindly lets anyone use the internet on his computer.

The location on the Ping River looks wonderful (and it is) and the fact that it is 15 minutes from the centre of Chiang Mai suited us, however, we did think there might be a local bus service (there isn't) so the only way to get anywhere is with a motorbike or taxi.

What we weren't prepared for was the noise from the road, living as we do in a very quiet place, it was impossible to sleep, even with earplugs. Now I know that if you are used to a bit of traffic noise you will probably take it in your stride, but we just couldn't and it goes on all night. There is a hotel on the opposite bank of the river which also produced a bit of noise.

Not being in the first flush of youth, we found our room to be tad impractical for us with one step down from the bed platform ( very comfy bed) and then 2 large steps in somewhat shaky wood construction down to the bathroom whose floor was covered in large pebbles and duckboards, begging the question, how do they clean the bathroom floors? You can't sweep pebbles or wash the floors.

There was very little storage space for clothes, no drawers and half height hangers, no prob if you are living out of a backpack but we don't travel light!

Yul advised us to keep the curtains closed to keep the mozzies out but they only needed to walk in through the cracks in the wall instead, especially in the bathroom.

Yul was effusively friendly when we arrived but as soon as we said we were leaving (and why) he changed and we hardly saw him again. He did take us on a tour one day, which we enjoyed but we had a bit of a contratemps with him over a gross error he made in pricing and booking a trip to the Patara elephant farm. We offered to pay half the difference/shortfall but he still wasn't happy.

I am sure Tonnam suits a lot of people (and by the reviews it obviously does) but I am afraid it didn't do it for us. We used to be in the hospitality trade so have an idea what we are talking about - Yul you need to be present a bit more - you said you built Tonnam yourself - don't let it fall apart from lack of maintenance. Cecile, I know you read these reviews- you've got a lot on your plate right now what with a full-time job and little Julie, so we hope you can continue to move in the right direction for you, your family and Tonnam. Unfortunately we can't recommend Tonnam to our friends - OK for younger people or those who travel light - not for us though.

We loved our time at Tonnam. Yul and his staff were great, accommodations clean, spacious and quaint, it just feels like it needs a refresher. The outdoor spaces were worn and the "extras" kayaking, workout facilities were very outdated.

Tonnam Homestay is the way to go if you plan on visiting Chiang Mai.

In Thailand, you definitely want the scoop from a local--Yul (our host) will give you insight on what Chiang Mai is all about! From activities such as elephant riding, kayaking, transportation, markets, etc.

Tonnam Homestay is set up like a hotel--laundry service, housekeepers, breakfast/lunch/dinner, pool, etc. My friend and I stayed in the room with a jacuzzi overlooking the river. Very clean with organic decor--felt right at home. Not to mention, he has a lovely staff who are all friendly and very helpful.

Location is also excellent, we ended up using their bikes to ride to Chiang Mai Bazaar and Night Market.

Thank you Yul and your incredible staff for making my experience to Chiang Mai an unforgettable one:)

PS. Food at Tonnam Stay is so DELICIOUS! But don't forget to also try to venture out into the town and try some of the street food!

That is the best homestay I've ever lived. Lanna style house with long history. There is pool. Every room is special with nice view or either river or garden.

We spent 3 nights in it。 Cecile and Yul and all the staff are very nice. The breakfast were great.

That was wonderful experience staying in Tonnam Homestay.

We are a family of 4, stayed 5 nights at Tonnam Homestay and loved every minute of it !!! The franco-Thaï ownners (Yul & Cécile) were very welcoming and made us feel at home right away.
The breakfast was amazing, so were the meals (a bit pricey compared to local prices but well worth it !). Pom, the cook, is lovely, enthusiastic, always ready to give cooking lessons and share her recipes.
This lovely collection of teak cottages is located just outside Chiang Mai and overlooks the river. It is very relaxing to come back to after a day of trekking. Nice pool. Quick drive to the centre. Clean and spacious rooms with airco.
Yul & Cécile did everything to satisfy our requests and recommended several outings which were great: Doi Suthep (the mountain temple), a day with elephants (elephants are well treated and cared for), one-day trekking in the jungle (through paddy fields and Karen villages - wonderful but tiring - 7-hour walk).
We would definitely recommend Tonnam Homestay if you are looking for a quality family hotel with a genuine local atmosphere.

The good; friendly staff / rooms are nice / food is good / a/c works / nice view / internet works

The not so good;
- location is outside Chiang Mai, so transportation is limited (taxi is 240bhat into town)
- cobwebs from light fixtures in rooms
- communications with each of the two owners were not consistent causing stress and dissatisfaction
- very low water pressure, sometimes no hot water
- advertise that airport connections are included. Not the case. We booked a total of 16 room nights, with a 2 day trip in the middle to a small village further north. Thus 2 pick-ups and 2 drop-offs. I had to pay for 3 of the 4.
- 500bhat for cooking class, which was great..but you are not told you are charged another 350baht to eat the food you cooked !!

We have stayed at 3 other guest houses in Chaing Mai previously. I scored all of them 4 or 5 stars.
