A more accurate description of Tonnam Homestay By Yul is that it is a shabby, run-down affair managed by an unethical owner. The entire hotel is in disrepair and full of junk. The towels and blankets are old and worn. The room amenities are well-used and dusty. When my wife spoke to the owner on the phone he said that everything is in good working order and that I [he] can swim in the pool if he likes. However, the pool is a disgusting pond of blue-green algae ostensibly because of a broken pump. The hot tub, pool, and other amenities also appear to be broken (or just turned off and full of leaves and grime). The buildings are falling apart. There are old canoes, a pile of bicycles that need to be sold as scrap, mold growing on piles of books, and the entire place looks like a pile of junk, dirt, and grime. The room air conditioner is old and smells like mildew/mold when turned-on. Everything is just run-down, falling apart, and not well-maintained. This wouldn’t be as bad of a problem if the owner Mr. Yoon (or Yul) just admitted the real condition instead lying to people on the phone. ("It is just like the pictures and reviews..." The truth is closer to 180 degrees opposite.) By the way, the hotel was completely empty and I was the only. person staying there...despite the owner telling my wife that the hotel was busy and full of guests. Worst of all, the owner told me that breakfast was included, I could drink coffee all day, and that I can swim if I like. The housekeeper (who doesn’t start until 8:45) only prepared breakfast on the second day and that was it. On the fourth morning, when I asked the owner about not providing breakfast, he got angry and complained that I drink too much coffee! (“My coffee is expensive. You are not to drink it beyond noon.”). When I questioned the owner about the pool and why he told me that everything looked "just like online", he got very angry, told me to leave, and that he would not refund the other 11 nights that I had booked. I felt very uncomfortable dealing with an angry and irate man in a foreign country and because I otherwise felt unsafe staying there with my belongings, I packed everything up and asked the owner to refund my advance payment, which he (of course--duh!) refused to do while telling me to leave anyway. To top everything off, the owner drinks a lot of high-end whiskey, eats dinner, and smokes with his cronies every night—probably laughing at the stupid tourists and foreign suckers that he rips off. The owner sleeps-in until about 9 a.m. and the housekeeper (who is supposed to cook breakfast) doesn't show up until about 8:45 a.m. The place is disgusting and although I can “deal with it” for a short time, having an owner get angry and tell me to leave when he isn't performing his end of the bargain is distressing. This owner conforms to the stereotype of shady operators who scam guests and visitors. When I tried to politely complain, the owner got angry, made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unsafe, and told me to leave—while refusing to refund what I paid for my remaining stay. I didn’t raise my voice, yell, or use profanity yet he just kicked me out and kept my money. Disgusting.

We loved our time at Tonnam. Yul and his staff were great, accommodations clean, spacious and quaint, it just feels like it needs a refresher. The outdoor spaces were worn and the "extras" kayaking, workout facilities were very outdated.

The strength of Tonnam Homestay is location at the Ping river with nice views and a very relaxing atmosphere. The city of Chiang Mai was located around 15 to 20 minutes by taxi that are very affordable. The accommodation is not the last up to date one but the nice surroundings and the excellent spirit of the staff were more than compensating this. We traveled with 2 kids and took the premium room. The overall experience was really great and a particular note to be made for the hospitality of Yul and the team. Yul is a real host and he gave us great recommendations to discover this great place and city. Our kids enjoyed the cooking classes and the nice half day trip with the bike. The breakfast and lunches were delicious and home cooked. The closed restaurant has also great food. Great accommodation for an escape in the nature of Chiang Mai.

Beautiful & comfortable place for a family. We took 3 bungalows and were very pleased. We like the home feeling rather than a hotel comfort and looks. Kids enjoyed the pool and local stay look and feel. Highly recommend this place. Yul and the staff is amazing and very accommodating.

We booked this place based on the overall great reviews here. Communication with Cecile was good beforehand and the airport pick up by Pom was smooth. Dinner on the first night was very tasty, although with 500 Baht per Person crazy overpriced. You get great quality food at the next restaurant 3 mins down the street and at many other places in town for way less money and it’s still great. I don’t understand why this has to be this expensive. I get you’re cooking for a small crowd, but still. We would be happy to pay 250 per person, but not 500. The same with “breakfast”, 2 pieces of toast and a fruit plate with either a croissant or a pancake (this alternates from day to day).Might be good for some people, but we really found this to be the worst breakfast on our whole trip. Only one kind of jam and when we asked for other items, the staff didn’t understand us and just said “no”. On our last day it would have been pancake day due to the alternating system, but we didn’t get any. This is just an example of how no one here makes an effort of going above for the guests. Just add one more item like eggs to the breakfast and it would be much better! A second cup of coffee or tea would also be nice. The bungalow we had was fine, it was decently clean and comfortable enough. Bathroom was ok too, shower pressure though was awful and water only gets luke warm. The pool area is nice, we really enjoyed the views on the river! The view was really our highlight here. We only met one of the owners, Yul and not Cecile, and I don’t know what happened here but he didn’t speak to us after the first night. Maybe because we’re gay? He was super friendly to all the french guests (older couples) staying here and that went on trips with him, but he didn’t speak a word with us. I am really astonished at how rude someone can be whose guests you are. Maybe because we didn’t book any excursions with him? They also are way overpriced and we booked everything ourselves. We had been hoping to make a connection with the owner and that’s why we booked a Homestay so we could hear more about the country and the culture... I guess this is a good place for anyone who is not independent and wants their accommodation to book everything for them and totally doesn’t care about the prices. We enjoyed the views and the tranquil atmosphere but didn’t feel the sense of personal welcome you would expect with a homestay.

Tonnam Homestay is the perfect home for family travelers. We stayed in a cottage with a loft. It was ideal for 2 adults and 2 kids. Yul was the perfect host. Pom was amazing in the kitchen and as a culinary teacher too. Our time in Chiangmai was magical because of our gracious hosts. We got to see so much and do so much in so little time. Yul accompanied us to some of our day trips which include the Poopoo Paper Factory, the multi-cultural village and a mountain tribe community passed the Doi Suthep Temple. Woody’s Elephant Home was also a recommendation! Tonnam Homestay itself is a welcome respite to the hustle and bustle of Asia’s street scenes. The saltwater pool is perfect for an afternoon dip. The meals at Tonnam make you not want to have anything else in Chiangmai. The Homestay cats were my kids’ favourites too. Being in a Homestay, we had the privilege of making new friends as well, sharing a meal or two with other travelers. We do wish it’s easy enough to pack our bags and turn up at Tonnam’s front door again soon.

Lots of activities to explore the surroundings, nice and quiet homestay (on the banks of the Ping), family room, great food (Yul had prepared a Thai Fondue for us. A must to have!). 2nd time at Yul&Cecile homestay and certainly not the last one. We highly recommend Tonnam Homestay!

If you want to relax and chill out Tonnam is the perfect place. Delightful location on the river with lovely rooms, fantastic pool and really good food. We felt very relaxed and very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Staff were great and all requests met graciously and promptly. Yes it is about 10 minutes out of the city but thats what we like about it. Nice to come back to peace and tranquility after the hustle and bustle of the city. I am sure we will be back.

Very welcoming, friendly and helpful, they make sure that you have an enjoyable stay. Nice rooms, relaxing place to stay away from hussle and bustle and tourist touts. Meals are excellent and great value. Away from centre of town but they organised taxis for us at cheap prices. (Same as I was paying for a short tuk tuk ride in town.) Highly recommend Tonnam homestay

Lovely place, with nice wide rooms in front of the pool, with a great dining place and a charming view over the river. Although if it is far from the city, this place is worthy for families. If you are looking for adventures don't even try it.
