Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fantastic quiet hostel that I would stay at again. The private room was clean, had a good sized bathroom and a comfortable bed. All staff were incredibly friendly and helped us discover the best of the area. As we weren’t up in time for breakfast we went to a cafe next door Fern Forest which is also lovely and offered a range of tasty and affordable breakfast and lunch options.

Loved staying there. Convenient location, spacious common area, fast wifi. The beds are super comfy and there‘s a lot of space in the dorms to put your stuff. Only down side the Thai dish for breakfast was with meat. No veggie option except toast.

Good stay in this place and located at old city area! about 10 minutes walking distance to the night market. The staff is friendly and the place is clean and comfortable and its quiet to stay. But the weird thing is the bunkbed curtain is not entirely blackout ( it has a part where light can go through it), which is a bit annoying to someone who likes to sleep in total darkness like me. Other than that its great. Cheap self service laundry too.

Very comfy beds and super friendly staff! The breakfast which is included is very tasty! Free water and refills too which is good. Location is handy, shops close by. Wifi is good and it’s a social hostel. Hot showers AND hair dryers - win win! I would stay here again if I came back to Chiang Mai. Worth the money!

The Common Hostel is amazing. The building is modern and well maintained, with a welcoming lobby and front patio. The private rooms are very spacious and include everything you need for a comfortable stay. The hostel is located next to a nice cafe/restaurant, and there are numerous options well within walking distance. The staff at this hostel are some of the kindest and most helpful people I have ever met in my life. On my second day, I was involved in a motorcycle accident that resulted in serious injuries. Paul, Tina, and the evening receptionist (I didn’t catch her name) all went above and beyond to help me work through the process with the parties involved. Paul helped me make numerous calls over the two days, and I’m not sure what I would have done without his help. Paul and Tina both provided invaluable advice and helped put my mind at ease about how to handle the situation that I was currently facing. The evening receptionist went out of her way to help me get much-needed bandages from the local pharmacy and provided me with a number to call if I needed anything. I will forever be grateful for the staff at The Common Hostel. If you are ever in Chiang Mai, I hope you consider staying here. There is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy your stay. If I could give this property 10 stars, I would. To the staff, thank you again for all of your help!

Lovely hostel, you get freebies; free coffee, free water with refills. We got a private room which was very spacious and clean. The bed was comfy and the amenities in the room were good. Staff very helpful and friendly, did free print outs for us and gave us some change for the washing machine as we only had a note. Told us about a great bar to go to where we had the best night out and drew main streets on the free map for us. Only downside to this hostel is there is a cafe next door which plays music starting around 8am and some days we wanted a lie-in which didn’t happen due to the music. I did try ear plugs but they didn’t work as the music was too loud and close but if you’re an early riser it’s fine and may have only been this room that experienced such noise. Otherwise, Very pleasant and would stay here again!

Of all the places I stayed during my month in Thailand this was by far my best hostel stay! The dorms are exceptionally clean and also kept very cool by air conditioning units, whilst the communal bathrooms are cleaned daily with excellent facilities. The beds in the dorm rooms are huge and I loved the storage lockers next to the beds. The extra touches offered by the hostel such as the water fountains and the range of food at breakfast made our stay even more enjoyable. Laundry machines and kitchen area in the hostel also very convenient and accessible. During our stay the hostel were also offering cooking classes to guests! Great location also - the old town of Chang Mai and an array of temples are within walking distance, alongside lots of really lovely restaurants. Couldn't recommend this hostel enough!

If you do hostels, this is a good one. We were a week in Chiang Mai while I did the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School and had read some good reviews of The Commons. Qualification: we were interested only in a double room, en suite, etc., which we got. It was spartan, but clean, relatively new, and had the basics. As with any hostel, most of the clientele is on the younger/backapacka set, but at The Commons there were also quite a few older travelers, including us, in our 70s. The location is good, in the old town, walking distance to practically anything you'd want to see in Chiang Mai. Breakfast was included and the usual mix of eastern and western offerings. Friendly, helpful staff, and generally quiet, except on weekends, until midnight.

I very much enjoyed my stay at The Common Hostel! Staff was always friendly and helpful. Location was good, the old town had a lot of restaurants and great tempels to visit, all within walking distance. With certain members of staff I experienced a language barrier when communicating in English which resulted in misinformation a few times. Although, with that said, all members of staff were always very polite, smiling and kind. The rooms were nice, beds comfortable, bathrooms and showers along with other areas were very clean. They also offer free waterbottles and refills. Breakfast is basic but a cheap way to start the day. I do plan on going back to Chiang Mai and will probably be staying at The Common when I do.
