I stayed here with four other Irish friends in July 2013. It was one of the most memorable accomodation experiences of our Thailand travels that year. Fantastic service from Mr. Kem, his wife and Happy the dog! The rooms were suitable for the standard of Thailand living and comfortable. The common room was a great place to relax, use the internet and make new friends! We went on a day trip with a driver recommended by Mr. Kem and had a fantastic time. Well worth the stay Thank you Mr.Kem.

We can't say enough good things about our stay at Vanilla Place. Though the rooms and facilities are somewhat basic, it's the customer service that really puts this place over the top. Bea was incredibly helpful whenever we asked for advice - both before and during our trip. She's very responsive via email, and even when we would show up to the front desk and find out she wasn't on duty, she would somehow inevitably always pop up from the back room to help. When asked about booking massages next door, she'd call and book our appointments and even greet us and walk us over and introduce us when it was time for the massages. SO incredibly helpful and friendly.

One thing we particularly have to rave about was how she and her team helped us when we ran into a predicament on our trip. The morning we checked out, we were en route to the bus station to head to Chang Rai when I realized I had forgotten to pack my favorite (and only) Merrell hiking shoes. Frantic, we called Bea on her cell phone from the bus station and asked if she might be able to package and mail them for us to our friend's apartment in Bangkok where we'd be later that week (of course, willing to offer to pay her for the postage and for her time.) She said she'd look for them and would help us ship there in time, and we agreed to coordinate the address and payment details via email later that day.

Fast forward to 20 minutes later, our bus had arrived and we were about to board...when all of a sudden, her male coworker whom we had worked with over the past few days walked up to us pushing his bike, breathing heavily, and holding out a bag WITH MY SHOES. We thanked him profusely, gave him a generous tip (which he didn't want to accept), hugged, and he headed off. I almost cried, it was so surprising and selfless. He must've rushed out the door the second I had hung up the phone with Bea.

So, needless to say, this place is awesome because the staff there REALLY, really care. Highly recommend!

Absolutely great stay, perfectly situated just outside the old quarter, but great for the night market, breakfast for me is just enough, but if you are expecting the big English, this is not for you, rooms are clean and well kept but no kettle, but I am sure if you want one they would supply one. Bee Gee is a great asset as she speaks good English and is very knowledgeable of the area and tours a real pleasure. thank you Bee.

I agree the hotel owner is great and makes the stay comfortable and pleasant, however this review is about the actual room. The room I had gotten was a standard basic, no windows in the room and a queen bed. The room is basic, the tv is not flat screen and not all the channels even work on the tv. The telephone in the room cannot dial out and need to go down to reception to dial out. The bathroom is horrible!! Absolutely disgusting. Mold everywhere, the rack where they place the shampoo bottles was rusted. Only 2 bath towels are given and even those look very worn out and old and aren't even white. Wear your flip-flops in the shower if going to stay here. Considering the hotel is only 5 years old, it's been worn down a lot. Either that or the cleaning staff need to do a better job and start using bleach.

Breakfast is included along with free wi-fi. Breakfast is basic. Toast, cookies, fruits and coffee.
They do have a dog downstairs, but are kind enough to take him away if you're afraid/allergic to it.

Kem was helpful with booking attractions and tours and a ride back to the airport, however when I wanted to goto Doi Suthep and Khantoke dinner he mentioned to me that getting a taxi back would be hard and I wouldn't find it. Relying on that information I booked via him and went to Doi Suthep for 500 bahts, when in reality I could've just taken a taxi back for 60 bahts/person from there. For the Khantoke dinner there are plenty of taxis around that area to come back to.

The location is great and in walking distance to Old Chiang Mai and the night markets, however I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone if you're looking to relax and stay in a clean, comfortable hotel. I'd spend a few more dollars and go somewhere else.

This was my fourth stay at Vanilla Place but this time my friend who had never been to Thailand before accompanied me. It was during the festival weekend and holy hoo those fireworks were like bombs!!! The noise however did not put a downer on yet another amazing time in Chiang Mai.

What can I say about Vanilla Place that has not already been said before? Absolutely nadda. The hospitality you get from this place just amazes me. I was deeply saddened to hear about Mr. Kem. A true gentleman who will be missed by many. I have no doubt that Mrs, Kat and her daughter will continue to do what he did and I wish them all the very best.

We had front facing rooms, with a small balcony. Yes it was noisy but during the festival you pretty much won't get much sleep with all the fireworks going off any how. Rooms were spacious, kept clean and importantly had great AC.

Hopefully see you again next year.

Because of the many good reviews of Vanilla Place on TA, we booked a standard room for a couple of nights. Immediately after arrival, instead of showing us the room (after a long trip from bkk with backpack we were pretty tired), they tried to sell us different tours etc. for a HALF AN HOUR!!! With the 17% tax via agoda.com room rate was about 30€/night. Pretty much for a guesthouse in Chiang Mai.
For this price you could expect something special. Unfortunately the room had a broken AC. So we moved to anotherone. The new room had no windows (and no fridge), so we asked, if we could get a room with a window since we didn't wanna feel like in prison. Finally, we got a normal room with street view. Nothing special and during day and night we couldn't sleep because of the traffic. On our 2nd day, we've been told that since we're in a room with a window now, we switched to a superior room and we would have to pay additionally 200 bht/night. I couldn't believe my ears. Even so, this would have been a valuable information BEFORE we changed the room. This is very unprofessional and leaves the customer with a ripoff feeling. In the end we paid because we didn't want any trouble. Our verdict: AVOID!

This guesthouse was the best hotel we stayed in during our journey through Thailand and Malaysia. It beats the six other hotels we stayed in by far because of a couple of reasons. The owner is a very nice man named Mr. Kem, he runs the place together with his wife Mrs. Kat. We arrived in Chiang Mai by train, we payed 200 THB for a mini van this was way too much. You should take a red cab that is cheaper. Mr. Kem told us this later as well. Anyway, we arrived at the guesthouse and Mr. Kem explained us how the guesthouse worked, how to get around in Chiang Mai and what trips he offered, also asked where we wanted to go/ what we wanted to do. We were hungry so he drove us with his car to the centre, because he was going there anyway. Dropped us at a very good local Thai restaurant and recommended some others as well. We tried them all and found that all the recommendations were excellent. (Try a curry at Lemongrass, close to the guesthouse!!). He arranged some trips for us for a very good price. We went to the tiger kingdom, elephant riding, the zoo (pandas!), a hill temple, the golden triangle, the white temple (chiang rai) and sight seeing around Chiang Mai. Also went to the sunday market, really something you should see when in Chiang Mai.
As for the guesthouse its self; the rooms were nice and clean, ours had a balcony, a tv, warm water and a fridge. The whole place smelled very nice (Thai) because of the essence candles that were everywhere. The breakfast was simple, toast with jam, but also nice. There was free wifi everywhere and a free computer in the common room. You could clearly see that mr. Kem was very proud of his guesthouse, he is an honest and nice man. The location is also good, not that close to the centre, but close to the night market. And there are enough red cars to take you to the centre for cheap (20 THB per person). I recommend anyone to stay in this guesthouse, we had an amazing time. It was like our home away from home.

We booked this place as we wanted to be close to Nawarat Bridge and Iron Bridge for Yi Peng and the floating lanterns launch points. The location couldn't have been better for this. The owners and hosts were very kind.

We didn't really care for the room. It didn't have a window (which we knew upon booking and is fine) but it made the room seem and smell verrrrry stuffy. The room had an old mildewey smell to it and wasn't a comfortable place to spend much time in beyond for sleeping. The shower also didn't get very hot and the wifi was spotty in the room.

I recommend getting a room with a window if you stay here!

This is my first solo trip to thailand and after an uneasy 2 days in bangkok i headed to chang mai and stumbled across vanilla place on the internet, with an email sent i recieved a very quick response and that was that away i went.

On arriving at vanilla place i was greeted with a smile from host Bee, almost imediately the stress of Bangkok had vanished, as i was told about the local area wheres good to eat etc...

After taking my things to my room, of which is not the flashiest but by no means the worst place you will stay in thailand.. with a clean room a comfy bed A/C water supplied daily what more do you need??

I had been in my room no more than 2 minutes and i hear a knock at my door.. i answer to ghe wonderfull lady that is Bee offering me plate oc fresh pineapple chunks as warm welcome.

So vanilla place is ideally located its not a far drivr from airport its a 5 minute walk to the night bazar and 10 minute walk to tae pae gate.. perfect!

Any day trips you want to do again look no further than your host bee.... an absolute ease booking anything! Bee would sort anything out and all you have to do is sit pay and wait for your transport to pick you up! Even on my last day i mentioned i would need a taxi around a certain time.. i walked downstairs with my things to find a driver had sat been waiting for me!

So to summarise look no further than Vanilla place when coming to chang mai a good value, clean, comfortable hotel with EXCELLENT service from the hosts! Breakfast is also included but after a few heavy nights out i didnt really surface for it! I was sad to wave goodbye to this place but i will return for sure!

I read a lot of reviews on Trip Advisor before deciding on a place to stay in Chiang Mai. I settled on Vanilla Place because of all the rave reviews about the service. Being a "flashpacker", staying in half hostels and half in hotels, I didn't mind simplicity. What I really wanted was a local viewpoint and somewhere I could relax, talk to someone who has lived in Thailand all their life, and get a sense of the culture.

Logistically, we loved the place. Five minutes to the night market, 15 from the center, and quiet so we were able to get a good night's rest every night. Yes, as stated...this isn't going to be a luxury resort with maid service every day and room service. What it will have however, is a clean bed, with AC, and free continental breakfast (often with some sort of fruit of the season, which exposed me to new fruits I'm dying to get in the U.S.), and the loveliest women you'll have the pleasure of meeting.

Bee and Thoungtron are the nicest hosts that definitely made our stay in Thailand. She arranged everything for us, without pushing or peddling anything, suggested some great restaurants, and even gave us rides to and from one of our tours and to the airport!! My friends and I left the place overwhelmed with her generosity and whenever we're in the area, we'll stay at Vanilla Place for sure.

If you're a tourist and need those bells and whistles, which are nice from time to time don't get me wrong, then stay somewhere else that's larger and less personal. If you're a traveler who wants to get to know the host and have a wonderful home away from home experience, then stay at this gem in Chiang Mai.

I think you should ask them by email, they are very available and I think they would arrange something. Consider there are stairs and no elevator to get to the rooms, the one I was in was a double one, a big bed but no space for extra beds. In March there was work in progress for another floor. To be honest I don't remember how much we paid, anyway very affordable in my opinion

You can purchase and book the local attraction at the front desk. But there're only some trips need to be pre-book. What type of activities do you interest? You can contact us directly via email.
