I have read somewhere that you can actually do a DIY day fishing trip in Bungsamran Lake Resort. Being new to Thailand and not wanting to spoil the highlight of my partner’s trip, I decided to book this trip with a fishing organizer. Very happy that I did.

We were picked up at our hotel in Bangkok 5 minutes earlier than scheduled and arrived at the Resort about 30 minutes later. We were led to our own fishing cottage/platform just a few meters away from a very clean washroom. The fishing guide was already busy preparing the bait which seemed to be a ready mix of chicken feed then hand pressed into a ball.

My partner did the fishing while I took videos and pictures. It is true. You can catch a Mekong giant Catfish in BLR at a rate of 2 for every hour with each fish weighing no less than 30 lbs. My partner did. In fact, everyone who fished whether booked or DIY had a heyday.

Bungsamran Lake Resort has a restaurant, souvenir shop, fishing gear and equipment rental. I’m not sure about the costs because ours came in a package that included lunch and lots of iced cold water.

For anyone, family, friends, couples or singles…it is a truly wonderful experience. I did not actually fish but even a non fishing person can actually be entertained by simply being there and watching everybody have fun.

If your into fishing & have a spare day in Bangkok & don't want to spend a bomb then this is the place.
Was a little difficult to find, however staff at the hotel were great in giving instructions to taxi driver. A map can be found on their website.
Trip took about 1 hour from Asok BTS station. Didn't book & lucky to arrive & not have too many other fishers. Fished the central pier with a guide for the day.
Price was very reasonable (<$AUD100) for the whole day & what a day. Got to the stage whereby i was happy to have used all the bait. These things just don't give up. They fight long & hard & really test your endurance. All up caught about 7 fish around the 40 pound size.
Checked out the bungalows before I left & these looked great if you had a larger group or wanted to stay overnight.
There is no need to hire a guide however would strongly recommend for anyone new to this style of fishing & the guide mixs the bait, baits the hook & casts the line. All you have to do is fight the fish.
Would highly recommend Bungsamaran to anyone keen on fishing (and giving your arms a real workout)

Maybe it's a bit unnatural to fishing professionals among us, but truthfully where else are you guaranteed to land such monsters one after other?
We enjoyed it immensely, although it becomes hard on you after few hours. In my view it's more then enough to rent one rod for two people, it will leave just enough time for rest between catches. Guide is a must, don't save on that. Do not prearrange anything, just find out if they are open, take taxi and come to enjoy. Don't expect much out of conversation, English is close to non existent, but you don't really have time for it anyway. Basic level of comfort provided, i.e. shade is there and they will bring your food or drinks order. In terms of double tier pricing and all the whining about it; it's common in many countries, overall cost of about $100 per person in the setup described sounds about ok.
Pictures are well worth it :)

Continuation from previous review at my son's insistence.
(Below review was Written by my 11 year old son)
We were greeted by our guide upon arrival. We were led to our very own private bungalow to start our fishing journey. We were given two rods. Our friendly guide sent the rods and bait for us. We grab some of the bait and sniffed it a bit to know the tackle's origin .As soon as i sniffed it i realised it was a different scent from my local bait in malaysia.A few minutes after we cast the first bait we were into a fish. At the end of the day we got about 20 fishes. It was a great experience and the best birthday for me ever .

I fished at Bungsamran lake for one day with Siam Fishing Tours on my trip to Bangkok and lived every minute. From the moment I arrived I was shown straight to my private fishing villa where I stayed for the whole day. Food and drink was brought to me and my girlfriend had someone come and give her a massage while I fished. I have always wanted to catch a mOnster fish and although my biggest wasn't a world beater (it was 66lb) I was happy that I managed to catch 11 Mekong catfish. All in all this was one amazing day and I would recommend it to anybody.

I was always looking for something new to do during my numerous visits to Bangkok on business. Bored with the usual facilties offered by regular hotels, I went in search of something that would afford me time to truly relax and escape the madness of Bangkok, at least whilst I returned to my room anyway!

Bungsamran Fishing Resort was just the ticket, it is first and foremost a world reknowned fishing venue, but has recently upgraded all it's facilities to include A/C Bungalows, with double and single beds, along with its bar's, cafe, restuarants, shops and other facilities it's now possible to stay on Bungsamran whilst in Bangkok on business, and unwind by side of a world class fishery!

This is something completely different to do in Bangkok and has renewed my ability to look forward to my stay in Thailand's capital!

In my 5 days in Bangkok i wanted 2 days of fishing, I had read the reviews of all possible places in Bangkok to fish and planned to go first to Bungsamran, then on 15-2-2015 Sunday I when there by a meter taxi did not made any reservation, its not needed the place is bigg enough, started fishing at 9.15 , I rented all the gear, house number 19 and a fish guide, the house number 19 is to my point of view one of the best to stay because the bigg fish are more close to it, around 11.00 the place did become very busy lots of people on the Sunday, the fish was a bit hard to catch that day, I landed 7 fish most of them around 20kg, lost one hook and broke 2 times the rented line, the fishguide is a must he takes care of all and mine did know how to fish very well he tryed all that day, so this first day was nice but I liked to give it one more try to get bigger fish, so I did go the next day on Monday again and ask for the same house and fishguide ( his name is Nu is the oldes from the fishguides I think) on Monday about 3 houses were with fishermen so nice kalm day, and the fish were amazing catch 22 Mekong fish biggest one 35kg 4 of 30kg and the rest all between 20 and 28kg, I used my own winding system Shimano 8000 with a braided line 50kg/110lb no line was broken and no hooks were lost this time, but I used my own rod of 3.6mtr by the 3e fish is broke into 3 pieces, the fish was only 20kg but so powerfull, I was ready for the lunch so I could have a rest for 30 minuts then whent on again, I had a great 2 days of fishing and hope to be back some day great place, yes a bit expensive but if you have only little time for the fishing then this place is worth every penny.

A bit far from Bangkok, but this resort has a nice ambience, they provide bungalows for family or small group of anglers. But the most importance they provide giant Mekong Catfish and you have guarantee to catch them

This place is a little hard too find, it is much easier to call and ask the receptionist to explain to a taxi driver how to get there. This worked for us.
When you arrive the prices are listed above the counter, so you can check what you should be paying. Try to organise the fishing without a tour as this can save you a few baht. Also, if you have a work permit or evidence you live in Thailand (legally) this can save you a lot of money.
We rented all our equipment and just fished from the pier. Our guide was nice enough, told us a little bit about what he was doing, but kept the chit chat to a minimum, which was a shame really. Towards the end as well he seemed determined to get through our bait as quickly as possible.
Another guide came and helped out while our original guide had lunch and he was great, taught us how to reel in much quicker and was much friendlier.
The facilities cover everything you need, and it was nice to fish in the hot sun with a cold beer. It is definitely a great morning or afternoon activity and a surprisingly tough work out as the fish are huge and plentiful.
