This is a really interesting place, a real time warp with modest but good rooms. It is a visual feast with eccentricities everywhere, signs barring sex tourists (reassuring) and complaints (not so much). With a strong dedication to the king R.I.P. there are numerous photographs and his favourite music playing which always seems just right. The service is casual but...

When we booked the Atlanta Hotel, we thought it would be old but well-kept, since it was a wee bit snooty on their website. When we got there, we were greeted with a weird stink that you only get from old and uncleaned surroundings. They did say they were a budget hotel, but honestly, it's not worth your money at...

First of all, I already agree with most of the positive compliments other reviewers have helpfully included, eg: charming decor, clean & comfy bed, not bad location, decent prices, quirky website (if somewhat sanctimonious-sounding in tone). In the interest of providing a fair review, I'd like to share my own experience, travelling as a single, Asian (non-Thai-speaking) man, staying for...

We visited the Atlanta on a recommendation from a friend. It's completely hidden at the end of a dead end street, but as soon as you get inside you are transported to another era. Warning signs aside (there are many - the website is hilarious) the place is actually very relaxed. The owners obviously care a lot for the place...

My fourth visit at the Atlanta . I believe all I had to say has been written already before but I will stress the fact that what I do like a lot is the fact that the rooms in this place are very clean and the bed very confortable, as well as the pillows. I always have excellent sleeps in...

Walking into the Atlanta Hotel was like stepping back through a time warp. This was the same hotel my dad brought us to in 1967 when we first arrived in Thailand. A very unique aspect of the Atlanta is that they are very focused on trying to keep the hotel very much like it was back then. And I can...

Glad to be staying at the Atlanta again! We were welcomed back like old friends. Same staff, same everything including the same cheap prices. Soi 2 off Sukhumvit Rd is perfectly located for public transport and getting round Bangkok. The Atlanta is like turning the clock back to the Art Deco era and is right in the middle of crazy...

If love the Atlanta and stay there every time I am in Bangkok. Hotels like this a disappearing fast as the world becomes more homogenised. If you like luxury hotels please stay away and go elsewhere, maybe the Marriott but then again if that is what you want then my advise is stay home. I'm sure they will have a...

It's something different. The lougne, restaurant and picky regulations are all memorable. It's hard not to smile your first time entering the lougne and getting welcomed by the kind staff. You can eat your breakfast in the restaurant, still in it's style from the 50's. Or visit the turtles and cats. Or spend the day in the garden. I wouldn't...

This hotel was amazing- full of character and history, I felt like I had gone back in time! I imagine this hotel must have been very grand and full of life back in its time. It is more of a budget hotel, and has a very artistic charm. The value for money was great, just what I was looking for....

Staying in Sukhumvit

Neighbourhood Profile
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok is, literally, untouched by modern pop culture. Walking into The Atlanta is like walking into another world, a long lost world. Most of what a guest sees and hears is old and classic - and authentic. ***The Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok, founded in 1952, features many superlatives, notably, the most photographed and oldest unaltered hotel lobby in Thailand, the first hotel swimming (diving) pool in Thailand, the largest selection of Thai vegetarian dishes in the world, a unique jungle-like garden right in the middle of Bangkok. The western menu features dishes made in the 1950s style - dishes that were on the original menu of The Atlanta, and prepared in the same way. ***The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok has strict policies: sex-tourists, drug users, trouble-makers, and undomesticated people are not welcome. Any of these found on the premises are dealt with summarily. Because of these strict policies, The Atlanta Hotel has many detractors or even enemies. The Atlanta Hotel upholds its principles and policies without compromise. As of 1st September 2013, smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on the premises. ***The Atlanta Hotel is also home to destitute cats and terrapins. Injured and abandoned cats seem to find their way to The Atlanta. Many are rescued from elsewhere. There are at the time of writing 36 cats. Some live in an enclosure on one side of the garden; others live in the staff section of the hotel. The terrapins are all rescued and saved from loss of habitat. There are at the time of writing 27 terrapins. They live well in and around the pond of the jungle-like garden of The Atlanta. Two staff are employed full-time to look after the animals, and visiting vets often volunteer their services, which The Atlanta welcomes. There is a celebrated drawing by a regular guest of The Atlanta of the lobby featuring cats lying on the round sofa. The caption reads (in Italian), "Cats, the real guests of The Atlanta." Guests of The Atlanta are typically animal lovers. *** The Atlanta, being at the bottom of a lane, has no passing trade. All our guests are either regulars or friends of regulars. The Atlanta has many returning guests who have been coming to The Atlanta since the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and, of course, much later. ... more   less
