Merlin Lodge is neither the typical Airbnb, nor a typical small guest house, but something in between. Located 20 minutes SW of the main shopping and tourist areas, it is immediately next to a BTS (skytrain) station and has bus stops both ways, just outside the door. The manager, Ken, and his daughter are currently renovating the whole place, so several rooms and the cafe were closed during my stay, however I was offered tea and coffee whenever I wished. Perhaps the best thing was the extremely comfortable king size bed, while the biggest negative was the staircase, which was steep and lacked a handrail, making it difficult to negotiate large luggage without Ken's help. The renovation plans call for a new staircase, although it's unclear when this might be installed. The Merlin is located on a major road (4 lanes, crossed by a footbridge) and there a several restaurants and other convenience shops within a couple of blocks and despite the busy traffic, noise was not a problem. Thanks to the skytrain, the main city attractions are readily accessible and a short bus ride will get you to the Erawan Museum, noted for it's gigantic statue of a 3 headed elephant , as well as numerous art treasures and a peaceful garden featuring scenes from mythical events. Poet, Philosopher, Perfect Host... Ken is all of these and more; proficient in several languages, Ken made my stay thoroughly enjoyable. While not for those expecting western style hotel level accommodation, the Merlin was ideally suited to my needs.

We stayed here for 6 nights , the owner picked us up from the airport and that was the best part it all goes downhill after that ....the place does not have an elevator so you carry your bags up 3-4 floors depending on which room is assigned, there is no minimart as shown in the pictures, no breakfast included, reception is a huge mess, our sink was clogged so had to use the bathroom of the next room (which was empty thankfully!) because apparently no one was available to fix it , there was an extra television kept on the floor of our room it was not even taken away, rooms were not cleaned in the entire time that we were there even after requesting that they do it multiple times, no fresh towels were given even trash cans were not cleared.. all this and we were the ONLY guests in the lodge! the lodge is located just outside punnawithi BTS so that is good however make arrangements to pick up or eat dinner while you are out as the neighborhood is empty after 7:30 pm and you will struggle to find food nearby.

First of all, I would like to say that the owner, Ken, was an excellent host. He was very helpful by asking all of our questions, giving us hints and tips about Bangkok, and generally being a nice person to chat to. The location of the place is also great, right outside Punnawithi BTS Station, making access to downtown Bangkok a breeze. Unfortunately, our experience regarding our room was poor. On arrival, our room was a complete mess, and had not been cleaned at all from the previous person who stayed there. The bed was stained, the garbage was overflowing, and there was no running water in the bathroom. Once we mentioned this, it took hours for the staff to fix the problems mentioned above. I know for the money we paid we should not expect a luxurious experience, but basics like this are to be expected. In addition, they offered to do our laundry, and promised it back within a day, but it turned out that it took two days, and the clothes were still damp when we got them back!

The first thing to mention is about the owner of the hotel Mr.Ken Khurana. Ken picked us from airport and gave us an intro about Bangkok on the way to his hotel.A nice experience to remember.Merlin lodge is a small but comfortable hotel at a good location. It is a ideal place for those who want to use the metro train..Its so near by On Nut station.Ken gave us guidance about metro trains and bus routes. Ken runs a cafe inside but those who want to try Thai food varieties have to go out. There are lots of 'amazing' street food outlets at a walkable distance from the hotel. Those who expect luxury its not the place and for those who want worry less comfortable stay its a nice place..

I stayed in this hotel in May 2013 for 5 days. I was little worried as in the begining, because I was landing bangkok in the early morning 3.00a.m. But hotel owner Ken was waiting for me in the airport. He promptly took me in that odd time to the hotel. My stay was very relaxed without any worries. It is most trusted place in Bangkok for me. The room was very comfortable, I am happy with this hotel, I have no hesitation to recommend this hotel to fellow travellers. It is very near to metro rail station punnawithi. Ken is very interesting person with all the information you want to know about Bangkok. He is very helpful and kind always ready to help and give the right directions to the inmates of the hotel. I am looking forward to come to this hotel once again in next year.
