In the midst of the Kathmandu chaos, the Shangri-La Hotel offers a wonderful, quiet place to relax in a convenient part of the city. The gardens and coffee bar are a perfect location to retreat to after a long day of touristing.

We stayed here for two nights before travelling up to one of the hill stations. The staff are all very good and the bar and gardens at the back are very restful, the food though in the evening was s little unimaginative from the buffet, beef stroganoff for example, surely there must be some more local dishes, The breakfast though...

The Shangri La is a perfectly acceptable old-style ‘colonial’ hotel, and nothing to do with the luxury hotel chain of the same name. It’s maybe a bit tired, but it provided a comfortable stopover for us on a number of single-night returns to Kathmandu over several weeks. It seems to be used by many of the big trekking package companies....

The hotel was great, with attentive staff. The grounds are well kept and the rooms clean and modern. They provide you with two large 1L bottles as the water is not potable. The hotel has a professional staff and provides concierge services to connect you tot he rest of Nepal. The only thing I found lacking was the food. The...

I stayed here 2 weeks ago. The room was spacious and reasonably well appointed, and the breakfast was comprehensive. Hotel staff were very helpful. The restaurant had a very pleasant outlook to the garden. I thought the location was a little out of the way but less hectic compared with the Thamel area. I think there should have been free...
