This hotel is an old palace that has evolved into various types of hotels over the years and each section has its own style and level of amenities. Some rooms are very inexpensive for the backpackers and trackers who flock to Kathmandu. Others are very comfortable but basic rooms for travelers looking for an oasis amidst the crazy street life of Kathmandu. Newer sections offer upscale and luxury accommodations that match anything in Kathmandu. If you appreciate the mix of guests, experiences and expectations - this is a great choice. If you just want a luxury enclave, there are better options.
I personally love the mix of travelers vs. tourists.
Rooms are comfortable, wifi is fine, tv OK with news channels.
Bathrooms chilly on winter nights - no heaters in our bathrooms in Garden view room, but that was fine. It warmed up just fine in the day.
Breakfast and restaurant are outdoors. I'm here in January, so chilly when the sun isn't out. But they have patio heaters and a fire pit... just bring a jacket for night and you'll be fine. Not an issue in summer.
Food prices were reasonable for a hotel of this level.
Service was great at all levels.
Best part is the central garden which is a wonderful escape from the hectic streets outside.
This is my third time in Kathmandu and I've stayed in resort hotels outside of the main area and another time right on a main street. KGH is a great compromise for peace and quiet right in the center of everything. I'll be back!

Everything of KGH that I experienced during my stay in early July this year deserves a 5 star rating. I had one of the the best on call reservation service and the best ever early check-in experiences. The hotel staff were kind and caring enough to accommodate my early check in request, almost 7 hours before the standard check-in time and that too with no extra charge (I had an early morning flight arrival). The hotel provides a free airport pick up in a big, nice airconditioned van for all international arrivals.

I stayed in KGH for 2 nights and was given a fantastic room with a balcony overlooking the lovely garden sitting area. The room facilities - as you would expect of a 3/4 star hotel was with a good bed, mini fridge, locker, amenities etc. There is a money exchange facility in the hotel and also a mini business center where you can use the computer, printers etc if needed.

Breakfast buffet was quite nice and food was freshly prepared and I enjoyed it.

The location is as central as it can get, right in the middle of Thamel and everything exiting that's happening.

The room rates are high compared to other hotels in that area but you don't get such gated, secured and huge area hotel in heart of Thamel with 24X7 security guard. If I am not on budget, I would always choose this hotel to stay for all my next visits to Kathmandu.

Our flight arrived in Kathmandu around 8am and so we were at the hotel by 10am. Despite the early arrival our room 24103 was ready. The room had a KSB, good aircon, TV, safe, minibar and tea and coffee facilities, each day we were provided with two bottles of complimentary water. There was also a hairdryer and complimentary toiletries provided. The only downside was we didn’t have a balcony which other rooms around us did. We had read that there was building work going on in an adjacent building, but this did stop by 5pm and so didn’t affect us. Breakfast was average with cereal, fruit (which was hard), and eggs of your choice with toast and pastries. We ate in the hotel courtyard garden for our first night and although the options are limited, a few Nepalese, Indian and also Chinese dishes, the quality of the food was very good. The hotel doesn’t advertise their rooftop bar and restaurant on the top of the new wing, which is a shame as we only found out about it on our last evening and popped up to get some great views across Kathmandu.

Words are inadequate to describe quite how wonderful KGH is.
I first stayed in the 1990s, KGH was quite a budget place and I was young and loved it.
I stayed in February 2020 and discovered that I still do.
Since the earthquake in 2015 they have carefully, beautifully rebuilt it, brick by brick. The rooms, the courtyard garden, the restaurant, all of it is lovely and the staff are kind and courteous to an unusual degree. They do their jobs because they clearly want to welcome you and make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The rooms and bathrooms have been furnished with style but more importantly, thought for the design.
If life allows I shall return many times, hopefully with my family.
I can’t recommend it highly enough.

An oasis of calm in the madness of the city. Great location surrounded by trekking shops, great pizza places, and tonnes of colour and life. But inside the hotel is quiet. The hotel stands on four sides, surrounding a green garden where you can relax, eat or drink. Staff are super helpful. There’s a baggage room to leave things if you’re trekking. There’s even a beauty salon where you can have a pedicure after a long trek. Lots of trekkers and westerners here. Avoid the separate area above the breakfast room at weekends - there’s a disco opposite that plays into the night! So lovely to come back here after the trek.

By far the nicest hotel in Thamel - a really nice large private courtyard and covered outdoor eating. We have stayed at several KGH hotels (Maya Manor, one in Pokhera and on in Chitwan) and they are all fantastic. This original in Thamel is no exception - Great staff, really nice rooms and a fantastic atmosphere. Guarded and fenced facility with a great buffet breakfast and on site shops and services. Western and Nepali food is served and all staff speak english. I highly recommend you pay the additional few dollars per night for this experience in Kathmandu. SUPER CLEAN !!

Had a very pleasant stay at KGH, the relaxed and dare I say, Arty vibe are immediately apparent and the central garden is excellent, a welcome peaceful space in the middle of the chaos that is Kathmandu. We stayed in the new wing, which we thought was well appointed and offered good value for money.
Some minor gripes/feedback, breakfast was a bit of a let down, luckily we paid the room only rate, and found an excellent cafe just outside the west gate, which was both cheaper and with superb food and coffee.
Secondly, the WiFi, although good quality, had an annoying habit of throwing you out multiple times a day, I'm sure a tweak by an IT person could sort this.
Finally, our room, 5-5102, was directly opposite the Purple Haze disco, and the Dumph Dumph Dumph, although faint, continues to 4am every morning, didn't worry us, but light sleepers may want to request an alternate location in the hotel.

All in all, a great stay.

The Kathmandu Guest House is one of the oldest in the Thamel area, with several additions having been added to the first original building. I first stayed at the KGH quite a few years ago, before it was upgraded, with new buildings, a lovely large garden area, a museum, and several shops including an art house; significantly higher prices reflected the upgrade. It is now part of the KGH Group of hotels.
It is centrally located in Thamel and offers the usual desk services, such as tour booking. Free airport pickup on arrival is available for international flights, with 48 hr pre-notification.
There are 4 basic room prices (in addition to suites and a family room), for the different annexes - Standard, Garden Facing, Deluxe and Superior, with and without breakfast option. The very good breakfast is $15 if ordered separately, and about half that if included in the room price. On this trip, I stayed at different times in the Standard and the Garden Facing rooms. My friend had stayed in the Deluxe room. The beds and pillows are very comfortable in all the rooms. A hot water pot, with coffee/tea, is in each room.
The best value is the Garden Facing room. The Deluxe is almost double the price, and from what I saw, primarily has a bigger garden window and a glass enclosure for the shower. The Superior room, located in the newest annex, is even more costly. My Garden Facing room had a good view, but the toilet/shower had a tub with no shower door or even a curtain, so water splashed from the tub over the floor when showering. It really should be upgraded with a shower enclosure or curtain. The Standard room that I stayed in for one night was almost the same price as the Garden Facing room; however, it is unattractive, with no view from the window, no closet, with a desk but not even a small suitcase table, and with the smallest bathroom of any guesthouse I have stayed in; the shower head is above the sink and toilet (see photo), which floods the floor. It was a mistake to book it. Be careful about the booking, since the Standard room is not always distinguished from the Garden Facing room.
Also, since our return flight was later in the evening, we asked about late checkout. The only option was paying 50% of the room charge additional, to stay from 12 to 6 PM. And if your breakfast was included in the original booking, the 50% was applied also to that, even though no more food was offered! Somewhat of a unfriendly ripoff.
I enjoyed my stay very much, but my lower rating was primarily because of the high price for the mediocre quality of the Standard room, as well as the excessive late checkout fee.

Wonderful experience! The hotel ia comfortable and has all necessary amenities and more. The staff is super friendly and the breakfast was delicious! I honestly thought KGH would be above my price range but it was surprisingly affordable. If you feel like you need a little pampering after a difficult trek I highly recommend staying at KGH!

Hi Jane A, I think the question is answered. Yes they have an elevator in the new wing and I think in the old wing they have 3-4 floors. You can ask them directly their communication is good and prompt. There will be a porter anyway. But make sure you don't choose the ground floor in the old wing cos there was storm water coming and the floors were flooded. And the rooms are average and the bathrooms are very basic.
