Being in Bhutan, gives you this feeling that you have really gone back in time....far from the maddening pace of things in everyday life. Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is tiny town situated on the bank of a river called the Thimphu-Chu. On one side of the river is the town of Thimphu and on the other side is the hotel - Riverview. As far as my knowledge goes, it is the only hotel on the other bank of the river. So it has a very serene atmosphere within the already quaint and serene surroundings of Thimphu. All the rooms come with a balcony facing the river, and the mountains beyond the river. So, at night you go to bed with the lapping sounds of the river water, and the silvery rays of the rising sun on the mountains, the sound of chirping birds and again the gentle sound of water flowing past wakes you up in the morning.

The hotel is the best in Thimphu and quite good in all respects, with all the necessary amenities. The hotel staff are very pleasant, simple and friendly. There is a restaurant with the hotel which serves food at all times during the day, the quality is good. Even the most discerning guest wouldn't find too much to complain about in Riverview Hotel

Our tour guide arranged for us to stay in the Hotel Riverside. It was that or the Druk but we chose the Riverside because there is alot of construction going on in town and the Druk in next to the construction and we are away from it. It is a very nice hotel. The views of Thimphu are terrific from the hotel. The food is good, and the people are genuine. All the hotels we stayed at had cable tv so there i was at 6am watching the opening pitch of the Boston/Yankee playoff game live. All the hotels and meals are arranged by your tour company. We used Bhutan Scenic Tours and were extremely happy with them. See my write up about them when you search "Paro". The whole visit to Bhutan is one you will never forget.

Bhutan Scenic Tours (which I highly recommend) booked us into the Riverview. While other hotels were rated higher by Trip Advisor, BST was right since the noise of barking dogs was very muted, as opposed to loud at in-town locations. The Riverview was quite comfortable, with none of the problems raised in other reviews. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the room clean, with comfortable beds and working plumbing. The food was okay, but not as good as in restaurants, which is true everywhere.

After writing some reviews for a recent trip it occurred to me that I never reviewed this hotel after our almost stay there last October. We were shown to our room which appeared not to have been cleaned since the place was built. It was one of those rooms where you couldn't imagine taking a shower or even taking off your shoes. The hotel had the general ambiance of a railway station.
We called the Jumolhari and got a room for one night. Went back to Paro rather than stay a night at the Riverview. I know you can't expect the best facilities in Bhutan, but you can expect clean and not decayed.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Riverview and found the following:
-reception was courteous and staff were friendly
-accomodation is equivalent to a 2 or 3 star hotel in the US. For us, it was more of a 2 star equivalent.
-the room provided one disposable pouch of shampoo per day that works as hair coloring as well (not a problem for me as I have black colored hair but might be a problem for light colored hair guests)
-the toilet paper was the roughest of all the hotels we stayed in Bhutan (Uma Paro, Zhiwa Ling, Meri Puensum, Dewachen Hotel). See my review of Uma Paro/Zhiwa Ling at Yahoo.
Bottom-line:
I would go back to Hotel Riverview if nothing else but for the relatively less noise afforded by the location of the hotel from the constant barking of dogs at night in Thimpu. The first night for us was a symphony concert but the second night was a rock n' roll concert. I can just imagine how guests staying in town can sleep at night without any ear plugs.
For those interested, I booked our private tour directly with Sakten Tours and I would recommend them to independent travelers like ourselves.

The hotel Riverview is based on the on the other side of the river to Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan. This means it is pretty quiet but if you want to wander around the town in the evenings it's less convenient. The rooms have a little terrace overlooking the town and satellite tv with quite a few English language channels. But the carpets are pretty dirty and the beds are very hard. The hot water taps need to run for between 20-55 minutes in order to produce hot water which is very frustrating. The food is good and there are two computer terminals offering slow internet connections. If you stay there in the winter the corridors are very cold and gloomy.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Riverview. The river-facing suites were spacious, clean and the decor suitably Bhutanese. But what was amazing was the view our balcony commanded. The hotel, being perched higher up, faces the city, and it was great to face the beautiful city go by its work, a football match in progress(at the stadium on the other side of the river) and dusk settle on Thimpu. The staff, just like all other hotels in Bhutan were very warm and courteous.Food served was also decent, and we were surprised to find all Indian staples available at the restaurant (as we had little children, so it helped with having home-cooked-style Indian food). The only downside was that there was no elevator, so it was sad to see the concierge lugging our enormous suitcases up four floor !

The hotel was nice, looked excellent on the outside however very dated inside.

The rooms were large however bare.

They had hot water and heater which was good

The food (dinner / breakfast) was good. The people working in the bar / dining area were very good, better than the reception area.

Great view of the city however a little out of town, probably about a 15 min walk.

Our tour, Bhutan Scenic Tours suggested this hotel over the Julmohari because of the barking dogs in Thimphu. The room was nice and large and had a view of the river. Room was clean, hardwood floors. Bathroom was clean and simple. The hotel was undergoing renovations. The restaurant was good (not buffet). We could hear the faint noise of barking dogs across the river and were glad we stayed at Riverview afterall. Staff was fine. We would stay here again if we were in Thimphu but there really is no need to stay in Thimphu overnight.
