When we arrived at the hotel it had only just reopened after its refurbishment and for the one night of our stay, we were the only guests. Our room had a KSB, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and the hotel provided two bottles of filtered water. There was a hairdryer and toiletries provided. Our room had no aircon or safe. There was a swimming pool which we did not have time to use. We ate in the hotel as there were no nearby restaurants. The food was very good with a soup starter and then a large variety of vegetable dishes with a chicken and beef dish, final a fresh fruit desert. In the morning we had cereal, fresh fruit, with eggs however you would like. The staff we met were all very friendly, pleasant and helpful. Our bill which was only for a few local beers had to be paid in cash.

Lovely refurbished hotel in Thimpu. The interior is absolutely beautiful with decorated carved wood structures, silk cloth decorations and charming staff. The hotel also has a big indoor swimming pool, conference space and wedding reception space ! We swam in the pool which had separate changing facilities with showers too.
There’s an outside bar but we didn’t use it.
Good location with lovely views.

It is a very beautiful , full of character hotel. Rooms are huge and very comfortable. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Located close to town. Food is good enough to eat. We came here to see the country so food doesn't bother me at all. Just a short stay so didn't have a chance to check the pool.

Pros: Room and food rates are reasonable compared to Taj Tashi and Druk Hotel. Service is also good. Internet/Wi-fi is strong inside the rooms and complimentary 24/7.

Cons: There's no air conditioning or electric fans in the room or even upon request, but it was not an issue during my visit as it was beginning to get cold. Shower takes a bit of time though to warm up (five minutes at least). There's no daily complimentary water. There's a few meters of walking distance is you want to get a taxi ride, and the road is not fully paved. Stray dogs barking at night and sometimes running after passersby can be a concern if not controlled.

Overall, despite the cons, which can be non issues, the hotel is still a good alternative to the more pricey ones at the main street in Thimpu.

Good Location (within walking distance to town centre). Lovely (Bhutanese) décor.
There was no shampoo & only 1 dental kit in the bathroom when we checked in. We had to ask for the toiletries. The room was very spacious but had only a small heater besides the bed & a bigger one in the sitting area. We tried to switch the heaters but the plugs couldn't fit. The plug for the hairdryer didn't fit very well & we had problem using it.
Though the WiFi works quite well, the tv reception wasn't very good.
The mattress was firm & very comfortable. We slept very well.
The food was generally very bland & not warm enough.
The staff was very friendly & helpful.
We visited the hotel spa & would have enjoyed the 'hot oil' massage much better if the spa room had better heating.
Even though the hotel claim to accept credit card payments, we couldn't pay via credit card.

The temperature was wonderful at Thimphu - a good getaway from the crazy temperature that we came from during this time of the year.
The location is great - a few minutes walk from the main town. This was our first stop for our trip to Bhutan with Druk Asia. Stayed in a room with a king-sized bed. The room is extremely spacious that comes along with its own powder/dressing room and living room. A glass lift is available for use if you are staying at a higher level.
There is a standalone shower and a bathtub but the shower had some drainage issues. There is a lack of hooks to hang your clothes in the toilet.
Wifi connection is quite poor and the food was avaerage. You might need a pair of ear plugs if you are a light sleeper as you would be able to hear the dogs barking through the night.

Hotel looks very impressive when you enter in it. Facade and Reception is very impressive giving heritage look and so are the rooms. Rooms are not very big still they are nicely done. Problem starts with washrooms first. No warm water was available in my room in the month of Nov. / Dec. I had to take early morning shower with freezing cold water. Flush, Wash Basin's water clearance is another issue. Moreover there was issues with restaurant service. Staff hardly bothered to provide average service. Market place is at walking distance, almost 1 km from the hotel. Hotel is located in the town itself.

My husband and I spent 10 days in Bhutan, with 2 nights at the Namgay at the beginning and one more night there near the end of our stay. The first impression is wonderful since the architecture is impressive, and the interior is beautifully decorated with hand painted wood carvings. The check in went smoothly and we had high hopes. The hotel is set back a bit from the main road and the downtown square but it is an easy walk there, and is quieter than the other hotels on the main strip. But alas, the 'devil was in the details'. Both nights there was a mini-fiasco at dinner...there are two restaurants but both nights one was completely booked by a tour and we were turned away at the door and sent to the other across the hall. Then we were turned away from the second one and sent back to the first one, and then when the staff sorted out their miscommunication, we were reluctantly allowed to order off the menu to sit in the second one or in our room. This was actually a blessing in disguise because the food a la carte was pretty good compared to others we had in Bhutan, and the buffet food was less than appealing. The morning breakfast buffet got picked over fast by crowds of tourists that swarm like locusts...we were not with a tour group and we couldn't help feeling left out.

Another mixed blessing is the spa. I was thrilled to see a range of massage services available for a great price (500-1000 Nu), but the experience was undermined by what sounded like a crowd of people yelling right outside the door. There was no music to mask the noise, so I commented to the masseuse that it was surprisingly noisy. She must have agreed because she asked me 'do you want me to ask them to stop yelling?" and when she did so, the cacaphony only dissipated for a minute or two. She later explained that it was tea time and the staff room was next door. All in all, this massage tested my abilities of meditation, but it was a pretty good massage so I went back for another the next day-- avoiding tea time!

All in all, the few things that went wrong at the Namgay would have initially led us to give it 3 stars, but after 'calibrating' our experiences at other hotels in Bhutan (almost all of which lack in customer service), we give this one 4 stars. If I were to return to Thimphu I would choose the Druk Hotel, hands down, but the Namgay is second best in the city unless money is no object and you splurge for the Taj.

The hotel has its ups and downs. ON the upside: the hotel has an engaging & interesting decor, large rooms, free (but weak) wifi in rooms, a good restaurant with tasty food, a nice spa/massage and a small bar. Downside: Two days of no (or not enough) hot water to take a shower, a so-so location, where, at night, you will hear scores of barking dogs until 4am, no free bottled water in rooms,. After looking around there are better choices.

This was the first hotel I stayed in Bhutan. It was very quaint and has character but the heating is poor. So the room and the hotel itself is very cold in winter. Food for dinner and breakfast were ok.
