Situated in the very center of Bissau, next to the main street and close to either Praca Imperio or harbour.

The rooms are spacious and clean, a huge roof garden allows hanging around. But unfortunately there is no restaurant or bar that would make the stay on that terrace even more pleasant. But no worries: Just on the opposite of the road is a very good restaurant...or even two (I just tried one ot them)!

I think that Coimbra is really an affordable hotel in the center of the capital; it might not compare to high standard hotels around the world, but you even do not pay for a high standard hotel. The staff is polite and helpful.

I think this might be the best hotel option....even though it is not a typical hotel, but a residence. The suites are the way to go and the rooms are some of the best I stayed in during my West Africa trip. Rooms were clean, good amenities (toiletries, mini bar, wifi, tv, nice towels) and very roomy. There are nice outdoor patio areas on the second floor.
The staff speaks Portuguese only and is often not at the front desk or available. Don't expect much from them. They are not service oriented.
Laundry - DON"T SUBMIT IT !!! First of all, it is enormously expensive and they RUINED my clothes by washing them with something that dyed everything a dark grey. They ruined one piece of clothing entirely and lost another item. Compensation was difficult and not nearly enough. I should have challenged my bill based on my clothing debacle!
Having said that.......do negotiate on your room price. I got a suite for the regular room price.

The restaurant buffet is good.....nice selection of food. Good value.

Bissau is not a town you would visit as a tourist. You're there for development work, to trade cashew nuts or drugs. This is the kind of clientele of this smaller hotel. There are two parts of it: the suites (nicer!) and rooms (not recommended!). Therefore reserve a room early and preferably directly with the hotel to ensure you have a decent stay. The rooms are basic and there's generally nothing wrong with them (a spider or bugs come as part of the 'normal'). There's wifi in the hotel but sometimes it works only in the reception area. The hotel has its own power generator, which is important in Bissau. It's located centrally, walking distance from most institutions and restaurants, which is not to say the area is particularly pretty. Hotel's buffet dinner is a good value and a great choice. Possibly the best food in town. Breakfast (included in the price) is also reasonable - not a huge choice, but sufficient. Given a lack of alternatives - this is probably the best Bissau has to offer to its travelers.

The building was promising for its infrastructure, taking into account that it is in Guinea-Bissau. Unfortunately, it was nothing more than that and it was a disappointment due to what is the main thing in accommodation - cleanliness.

Practically non-existent cleaning or done simply to ship. When I arrived there was an open bottle of water on the bedside table and a dead cockroach on the floor. From then on, there was a whole appearance of animal life - cockroaches, centipedes and geckos. Please note that although we are in Africa, this hotel is in the city.

All you had to do was look behind the bedside table or move the bed to see dirt and rubbish that must have been months old, being nice.

The only positive points of the accommodation were the freshness of the room and air conditioning and the breakfast, which was the most complete of my stay.

I have been around Africa, staying in crappy hotels paying 3 Euros per night (in the most remote areas, without electricity or water). Well, this hotel is consider the best of Bissau. The single rooms are old, dirty, the smell of the restaurant´s chammine enters in the suites rooms upstairs, the staff is not correct with you (90%), breakfast low standard.. and is very expensive. The building itself is wonderful and it could be a high stander hotel. The problem is that they not invest in the hotel. I will not enter in details about my experience but I will never sleep here. The only positive point is the kindness of 2 staff.

Travelling on business to countries like GB - one can't be sure that everything will run smoothly, But at Coimbra Hotel and Spa it all went so smoothly and well. First of all - the building is awesome! An architects dream. Check their restaurant's windows in P Mondrian style - very stylish. The building with the rooms are also very cosy and quiet. Free airport transport is an extra plus since many 4 star GB hotels charges 5 000 CFX/single! Coimbra is labeled as a 3 star but service is really 5 star. And don't worry about the language, even if not all of them speak English - they will fetch one of their colleagues who can. Food is more than decent, and please stay and use their buffet style lunches and dinners with 3 different options every day and lovely deserts. Food is very fresh and good. However, there's one thing that the management could change - and that is the music played in the restaurant. Since I was there for 2 x lunch and dinner - I heard the same CD played all over and over again, and I'm not a fan of Celine Dion to start with:) Be proud and play local music from GB instead and/or change CD daily like a rota. And also, a relief for the staff there who really have to listen to this CD all the time. If you're looking for hotels - and I've stayed at many - not in GB but in other African countries - you can't get any better in Bissau.

I just spent one week in Bissau and had booked this hotel for 6 nights. after the first night, I left as
- the place smells badly
- there s no spot with air condition except within your room
- the rooms are old, the beds unconfortable
- the food, particularly breakfast is not good - no fruits, no vegetables
- the aircon and fridge are very old and make therefore a lot of noise.
- you CANNOT pay with cards
- the WIFI doe snot work (comes and goes - not possible to even charge a website)
- above all, what was most irritating was the service.

Despite my fluent portuguese, the people at the reception could not care less about my stay. So, certainly not recommendable.

If I knew about this hotel before I came to Bissau (first trip, had to rely on other people's feedback), I would have gone there from day one. It's the best value in town (I visited all the decent hotels there were, so believe you me when I say this). Well kept, very clean, right in the centre of the town but very calm at the same time. I paid 10,000 FCFA less for a superior room there than in the Azalai hotel (which apparently is 5 star, don't buy it). The room was great. Super clean, modern, well equiped. Everything was functioning, very clean sheets and towlels. I just loved it. It may sound a bit too enthusiastic, but having tried several other hotels, when I came there I just felt happy. Excellent breakfast, beautiful salon and rooms, terrace with green plants and comfortable chairs and tables, and the restaurant is just next door (6000 CFA, about 10 EUR you get full buffet drinks included, can't beat that). It's right in the center, there's Ecobank next door, a couple of shops where you can buy anything you need (water, shampoo, food, etc) and there's a lovely bookshop downstairs. All in all, great experience, next time I go there, no hesitation from my side - Coimbra Hotel. oh yes, the WiFi was great even in the rooms and staff was nice (although sometimes you had too look for them but they were not far away, I am speaking about the reception person). No cards accepted (just like everywhere else in Bissau).

Clean, spacious rooms with AC; regular breakfast. However a inefficient, indifferent, helpless, almost hostile receptionist(s) where, by contract with the travel agente, they had to organize our transfer(s) in Bissau. They where more interested on the tv program then in the customers needs. The home driver was the helpful one.
The same panorama returning to the hotel from the islands. And because it was the 1st January every body was out except the guard in the front door and the helpless receptionist. Customers had to go out for food and drinks and return to the hotel. As a doctor I spent many Christmas and New Eve working dreaming to be outside with family and friends. But I never missed my duties with the patients. "Serviços mínimos" does it mean something to you? Definitely this historic hotel deserves a better management.

One of the top hotels in Bissau. With quasi 24 hr electricity, internet. Nice breakfast and dining facilities. Gym and sauna are a plus. Being a top choice of travelers, it also represents a meeting hub of professionals who visit Guinea Bissau.
