Very nice sanctuary in Bissau. Pretty grounds, well maintained. I had a lovely suite; some travel mates in older buildings weren't as satisfied. Internet decent. Lovely pool, well attended to, clean, though oddly open only 10 to 7, making morning swim impossible. We didn't eat here. The bar is thin with no seating: Cristal beer just cfa 2k, but a cocktail (I mixed myself) cost a hefty cfa 5k. Nespresso machine at breakfast broke; no filtered coffee. Staff are super kind and try though. I'd have given five stars, but readers should know this is not in the heart of town, nor in the Che G area. You can walk out and up and down the main drag, but there ain't much to see. Mosquito net; AC; TV with BBC World and multiple sport channels, but only a small LG; in-room hot water heater for sink and shower, love that

The hotel itself is good, even though it is located a bit outside of city. I would say, the hotel is 2-2,5 km from the city center. It is a big hotel with a few buildings. We had an AC and a fridge. The only disturbing thing is that the staff does not give glasses and plates for your room. You can solve this issue, if you can buy disposable tableware or you eat at the restaurant in the hotel.

I stayed in the hotel for a week while I was in Bissau for work. The hotel is enclosed and secure in a cul de sac a little way out from the city centre. There were large wooded grounds and a big swimming pool which made the whole atmosphere very relaxing. The bedrooms are large 3 roomed bungalows with air conditioning, wifi and a drinks bar. Water pressure in the shower was low but this was unavoidable. Cleaning of the rooms was done well.
There was plenty of comfortable seating in the long lounge. Unlike one other reviewer I thought the restaurant was fine with a varied menu. The range of food available for breakfast was not as varied as you would expect to find in a western hotel but it was perfectly reasonable. My only criticism is that the service at the bar was incredibly slow.

The Azalai is not a conventional hotel. But then again, Bissau is not exactly a conventional town. In a location that is very challenging, the Azalai is a reasonable hotel at a more than reasonable price. It is not a standard single building but rather a collection of town house style villas spread out across a very well kept and very beautiful ground. The security is fine. The reception area and restaurant aesthetically pleasing, and the room adequate. It was small but there was hot water and air condition and working wifi. The lights stayed on and the location is great. That is way more than I could have asked for. However the restaurant is the pits. I mean how can you consistently mess up french fries or grilled fish. The food is awful, expensive, and even the breakfast reflects the poverty of the location and not the price of the hotel. It is so bad they would do better to eliminate it altogether and let the guests fend for themselves. The pool and hang out areas seem fine. Bissau is a nice town that hopefully will modernize soon. The Azalai is good enough to get a return visit only by default and because the price is not out of control at $110 per night. In another location, I would be a lot harsher, but for business or vacation, this is more than adequate comfort. Forget about TV. Limited at best. Staff is friendly; you can get by with French or English if you do not speak Portuguese. Overall, don't be afraid of it. Just keep your expectations reasonable. If you are going to Bissau, you will have to be prepared to do that anyway.

There are not many hotels in Bissau - this is a converted army camp. The rooms are small and basic. There is free wifi which works quite well. The food choice is very limited and service is slow. Surprisingly few mosquitos. We arrived late at night after a long flight (free transfer from the airport) with a prior booking - the staff on duty demanded full payment in cash for our whole stay in arrival - They were quite rude. I then said I would pay by credit card, but the phone lines did not work so we paid cash for one night and they allowed us into the room to be sorted out the next day. The next day we went round some other hotels and found them to be much worse and very much more expensive!!! At any rate, we spoke to the management and they told us that the staff on at night were students and did not know the proper procedure. No safe in the room, and if you pay by cash be very careful -the hotel gives an exchange rate of 400CFA to the USD - when we were there the real exchange rate was 503CFA to the USD! Go to the local bank and change your money into CFA - or make sure your credit card charge is put through in CFA and not USD or Euro. The vehicle to bring us back to the airport broke down twice on the way there and we nearly missed our flight. OF importance - we did not know that the Royal Air Maroc flight check-in desk CLOSES at midnight for a 3am flight and you have to go and book in your luggage and get boarding passes during the evening and then return to the hotel and rest for a while before going back to the airport - nobody tells you this sort of thing at the hotel - but it was easy to negotiate late checkout at no extra cost.

Beautifull resort with the best pool in the country. large and confortable rooms, minibar. the staff is always smiling. the service is slow so dont be in a hurry. Big contrast with the rest of the city a Palace in the desert. If you want to enjoy Bissau spend the night in this confortable and safe hotel.

Bissau is very poor and rundown. I visited the Hotel Azalai in the dry season when the distances from the rooms to the main building did not pose a problem. I had a comfortable and peaceful suite which was more than adequate for my requirements. There is good security. The main includes reception, bar and the restaurant. The swimming pool is about 80 metres from the main building. The menu was limited but the food was adequate. Staff on reception were helpful but it is advisable to pay the credit card before nightfall ( a lot of flights out of Bissau are at night resulting in late checkouts). The ATM machine on site was not working properly.

Bissau has very limited choices in hotels, and even more limited choices where people actually reply to e-mail... Online booking apparently did not go through, so I reserved directly via e-mail.
Airport-pickup was no problem. The hotel is located 1-2 kms outside Bissau center, but you can easily walk there (or take cabs or public transport). Plenty of shops in the area, but to have dinner I would recommend to go elsewhere in Bissau (the onsite restaurant is quite basic and overpriced).
The hotel is located in a big, nice garden, and the rooms are absolutely fine, with A/C, if a bit spartan. Do not expect 5* luxury - basic, but clean and functional. Safety box is available. There is a big wall with security around the hotel, so safety is not of an issue. A good choice.

I stayed here for a few nights on business recently interspersed with 2 nights in the interior. This was my first time in Guinea-Bissau. On arrival at 10pm I found the reception staff to be quite efficient but somewhat officious. English is not generally understood. The room was small and the shower room uninspiring. Breakfast was not great. Dinner was much better with well prepared food. Free wifi (but slow)There is a well kept pool (although I didn't swim). So what makes this four stars? Simply having to stay somewhere else inland for two nights and then returning. It is infinitely better than the general standard of the country. If I return to Bissau I shall stay here again.

Hello Sir, thank you for your question. I am pleased to inform you that the Hotel Azalaï of Bissau has already accepted for several years the payments by Visa card and also Mastercard. In addition, several automatic bank machines are operating in the city. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future, and please receive the greetings from the entire team of Azalaï Hôtel 24 de Setembro of Bissau. The Direction

"All the rooms in the gardens are individual small lodges with their own sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. The aircon worked well for us;. There are no places of interest near to hand without using transport. This is a very poor part of the world - one of the poorest. The hotel is adequate but not of European 4 star standards. However, coming out of the heat it's an oasis. The breakfast was good and staff attentive. But I stress this is based on local standards not top European ones. The people are friendly and helpful."
