A Canasta is a destination with true sustainability at its heart. Built using recycled and local natural materials its unique location is hard to beat. Nestling in the lush tropical rainforest of the Pico Bonito National Park it is reached using a cable car - 'La Canasta' ('The Basket). It is a perfect place to experience the true beauty of Honduras - hiking in the forest, splashing in the waterfalls or spotting the diverse and colorful wildlife.

This place is incredible!! We spent three nights here in paradise. The rooms are very comfortable and the lodge is gorgeous. The surrounding area is beautiful! What really made it special for us was how kind and friendly the family was. The family has been living in this area for generations so they told us so much about the history of the area. We learned about the plants and animals. They brought us on hikes and showed us the most beautiful places! The food they cooked was delicious! It was so tasty and the portions were massive. Overall the place was amazing value, comfortable and homely.

I found this place in "Honduras Tips" at 11am, sent a reservation request and then set off without waiting for a reply. I have been travelling for just over a year and this is without doubt one of the best places I have stayed. We arrived to the most effusive welcome I have received- the family who own and run it should receive an award for friendliest family in Honduras. The lodge is on the other side of the river and you reach it by yelling across the river and some one comes to get you in La Cañasta (the basket) which is a sort of hanging bench on a steel cable across the river. The moment you cross the river you leave the rest of the world behind. (there is no wifi but you can check your emails)
The building was designed to the highest environmental standards and is constructed of blocks made out of rice sacks filled with clay, sand and lime, plastered over and then painted white. They hope to put solar panels in for hot water in the future (only cold water at present- not a problem and good forceful shower). The two rooms at the front have doors opening onto a balcony with a view over the river and mountains. We had a large, airy room with a very comfortable bed with white cotton bedlinen. The place is decorated with textiles made by the women's cooperative who work at the back of the lodge (fairly traded goods available to buy). (see pictures!)
The price was around $27 a night which included breakfast. Meals were served for 100 lempira a person for lunch and dinner- changed my view about typical honduran food.
The family went out of their way to make sure we were looked after and had everything we needed.
You can explore the river and waterfalls pretty much independently (a little bit like canyoning/bouldering). The lodge can also organise other activities like kayaking and hiking.
After three nights this is probably as close to going on retreat as I will ever get. I feel relaxed, rejuvenated and thoroughly well looked after. And all in a lush jungle setting (there are toucans at around 6am if you get up that early). There is also a swimming pool.
Although turning up virtually unannounced was absolutely fine I would recommend contacting them via the website in advance, particularly if you want to do any specific activities. At least one of the resident family members speaks english. There are really clear directions on how to get there on the website- by public bus- take bus from La Ceiba terminal going to Yaruca, tell person on the bus that you are going to La Cañasta and they will drop you off at the right place.
I wholeheartedly recommend this place.
