Well worth its price. Visiting from Toronto Canada
I was a guest at the Palma Real Resort in La Ceiba, Honduras from Jan3 to Jan10 2005.
My impressions were taken by comparing it with other all-inclusive resorts of same price in Mexico, Cuba and Bahamas.

F.Y.I.
Honduras is only 4 1/2 hours by plane.
The trip from the airport to the hotel was a 45 minutes uneventful safe ride.

Hotel - All rooms facing the ocean, adequately equipped in working order.
Well-groomed gardens beautifully decorated with local motif.
Computers available, modest fee
Small gym with modern equipment.(1 treadmill, 1 elliptical and 2 bicycles)
Caveat - When the hotel is filled to capacity a second location near by is used to accommodate the overflow. The second location is not 4 star resort therefore not as nice as the main resort. Avoid it.

Staff – Helpful and knowledgeable about all aspects of the resort.
Caveat – Only the front desk staff could really speak English.

Beach
With hammocks between the palm trees the calm seas make this beach a very relaxing experience.
Caveat - If you are looking for a white sand type of beach this is “not” it.
Small strip of sand and rocky bottom – water gets murky every time it rains.

Food was adequate.
A variety of salads main courses and deserts were available to please almost everyone. Even vegetarians and protein diet minded people.
If I may add the restaurant gives you the overall impression that it is safe to eat there.
A la carte-dinner.
Unfortunately although they have claimed to be able to serve guests a la carte they simply made up a menu of what was been served at the buffet and served you at a different location. What is the point of it?

Drinks
The drinks were limited to their local variety although if you put on a request they will try their best to accommodate you. Modest variety. (Rum cocktails, vodka drinks, tequila and local beers)

Town
For US$5 per person the hotel van will take you to downtown La Ceiba.
A local Mall gives you a safe environment to shop.

Shopping – Expensive, no variety and very poor service.
People expect when they are traveling to bring home cigars, T- shirts or maybe a bag of local coffee. Again poor to none existent English skills from the attendants and a general lack of interest in selling you anything. I truly think you would be better off buying your souvenirs at the resort’s local shop.
Prices at the Mall were more expensive than Toronto and in US dollars.

Tours available.
Pico Bonito
3 hours hike at “Pico Bonito” National park. Visit a butterfly farm.
Great for people with an appreciation for eco-tourism.

Tree Canopy’s Tour
Horse back ridding to the top.
Using safety gear slide through steel cables among tree’s canopy. (great view)
Stop at hot water spring for a relaxing dip. Horse back ridding down from the top.

Ruins at Copan
4 - 6 hours form La Ceiba. Travel during the day spend the night at local hotel and visit the Mayan ruins and a museum in the city of Copan.
Drive back the same day. Awesome cultural entertainment I have been told.

Cayos Cochinos
A boat will take you island hoping through white-sand beaches and coral atolls. Perfect for snorkeling (equipment supplied)

There were more Tours than there were days in a week.
Also available; Water rafting; Butterfly farm; canoeing through natural lakes and more. Ask the front desk.

The contrast of Touring through the ecological areas and relaxing at the resort make this trip very entertaining.
I would recommended without hesitation.

My boyfriend & I went to the Palma Real Beach Resort in Honduras on an all-inclusive last minute sell off. It being my first time traveling outside of North America, I was not sure what to expect. Contrary to what I thought I had a wonderful time.

Honduras proved to be a very poor place to visit with many beautiful spots to visit. Cayos Cachinos, keys off of the Caribbean sea with coral reefs. Excellent for those who love to snorkel. There also we got to visit the native people on a very small island with limited space & huts. They welcomed us to their island. Selling small stuff, offering cervesas for a fee. It was amazing to see how these people lived with no electricity, & no running water in the middle of no where.

The Palma Beach Resort --Rated as a 4 star resort. Although I would have probably rated it as a 3 star. The halls ways were sheltered with Palm leaves, openings & windows through out. The walls painted in different colours, yellow, orange, throughout. You could tell that this area was still being worked on and that there was still room for improvement.

The staff very courteous, & polite. Most spoke some english or tried really hard to understand. Tipping was appreciated throughout the resort.
We also met some very nice people, also from Canada while we were away on our trip.

The food. Buffet style dining. Pretty much offered the same types of food for each course. Breakfast: eggs, beans, breads & pastrys, fresh fruits, hash browns Lunch: calamari, fish, chicken, beef, salads, vegetables, rice, pasta Supper: pretty much the same as lunch but served differently. A La Carte is an option. And they have 3 theme nights for dinner. Carribean, Italian, & Mexicain. Did I mention the unlimited drinks also!!! Drinks were served only at the swim up bar in the pool or at the main bar in the middle of the resort.

To anyone considering Honduras as a place to visit. I think that eventually this could be the next hot spot to visit. In a few more years, it will probably cost a fortune to visit this quaint spot off of the coast of the Carribean Sea. Experience it now before it gets over crowded.

WE loved this resort. I saw all the negative comments and was somewhat leary when we booked it. This is a resort where you get more than you pay for considering the reasonable price and location.
The staff was absolutley wonderful. But I have learned to always tip generously as the people make very little money and work long hours. I always acknowledge their hard work and long hours. Believe me I had people bending over backwards for me. A five dollar tip got me a room at the pool which I really appreciated. I had two or three different people deliver ice to my room twice a day. I had a bartender bring me drinks poolside. (i always tip a dollar a drink or $5 a day for bar service. There are two shifts so I make sure everyone gets a little appreciation. The massage lady Annie dropped by my patio every morning to see when I would like to have a massage (its $10 and I tip $ 3 to $ 5 ). Oh a lady came and did my laundry for a nominal amount (the hotel did not charge you just ask at the desk or the maid--Annie does laundry for the guests and it will be ready the same day or the next day. I think I gave her $5 for 4 or 5 items and she probably did not expect that much)

The pool was beautiful. The water park was absolutely great. (However remember to get an id bracelet for the park as I did not know you had to have a separate one and if I had not been persuasive and polite we would have had to take the little trolly back to the resort or pay. Also remember you are in central america. The largest slide is not well maintained (there are some rough spots and we stayed off it when we learned someone got hurt (minor) one it that day.

Food is adequate and sometimes very good. But we dont care much about the food when we are having so much fun. Sometimes it was not so great but generally they had a variety of meat choices for dinner (Sunday is leftovers from lunch because that is the big meal of the day) and lots of COOKED vegetables. I emphasize cooked because we generally avoided the salad bar choices that we always avoid in Mexico to avoid any food poisoning. The ala carte restaurant was set up overlooking the ocean and the food was good and freshly grilled. Oh desert at this resort were generally better than what you see in comparable resorts in Mexico and Cuba.
If you want to go out to eat there is an absolutely fabulous seafood restaurant in Samboa creek where you get more lobster than you can eat for around $10 US. Its in the black community nearby and everyone loves it.
The trips to the rainforest were wonderful and the other ecological tours. We were scheduled to go snorkeling but it rained. ( this is supposed to be one of the best trips.) The Canopy tours were something everyone loved. (You can book trips in town cheaper but a safe cab is at least $15 one way so take a group (safe means a late model air conditioned vehicle with a driver who speaks English--I highly recommend Hector (resort knows him) but you have to negotiate the fare with him. He really took such good care of us that we were amazed. it was like having a personal tour guide. So we tipped him generousy. The mall in town is cheap and as nice as any in North America. We went on a rainy day and ate at Appleby's because the kids love it and couldnt believe there was an Applebys in Honduras! It was a great rainy day trip when you have teenagers who are mall rats.
My 15 year old who is well traveled to many resorts said it was the best vaction he ever had. He was disappointed because no pool table as in pictures. And you had to hike to the other hotel to play basketball. (but we did not know there was a trolley til late in the week. It take you to the entertainment at night, the waterpark and all around the grounds and leaves every 15 minutesfrom the front. This is not a large resort but the trolley was a nice touch (it was open train type cars hitched to a big tractor)
My advice is as follows: Take lots of bug spray. We sprayed the doors with raid every night and had no problems with mosquitos except the one night I forget. Make sure and get the one that zaps everything and just spray around and outside of the doors. The patio doors did not seem to locked at first but the handyman fixed it immediately after I called (and I tipped him so the entire vacation he was asking if I needed anything else without being a pest about it). Remember to work on your spanish because english is not the language of the day. Also remember to appreciate these people and be patient and they will do anything for you. Oh do your trips on weekends as the local families invade the resort on weekends and believe me I mean big loud but wonderfully happy families. The setting is beautiful: rainforest, ocean and beautiful weather and beautiful people.

Oh my son played golf at the local club in town. It was only $12 but the cab with Hector was $20 I also arranged for a guide and a golf cart which ran another $30. But for 18 holes it was fun. The club is old but a great experience and has pool for the parent that wants to wait and not play. It is always cooler in the afternoon. He played in the morning And I sent a guy on a bike to take him something to drink. He was a little concerned because the guy at the locked from gate had a gun. But he was the security guard.
I had some problems in ocean because I am partially handicapped (bad knees) getting in and out because of the slope of the sand. But someone always helped me because I have learn to ask for help. Found the currents a little strong so I stayed closer to the pool since my room was so handy and the pool and it waterfall grotto was beautiful and had an oceanview.

Have a good time and relax! We really loved it. And we are going back to see some of the things we missed. Oh I had a brief meeting with one of the owners of the franchise who dropped by on the
weekend he was extremely kind and receptive to any suggestions that would improve their attracting Canadians. He not only welcomed my suggestions, he seemed genuinely grateful for.

Listen to complains!
Ot cannot be to read many complains about safety, AC, Comfort but obviously they always make the same mistakes!
In the old building there is no WiFi, the AC is not working, Rooftop Fan not working, electrical sockets hanging out of the wall whocg can cause to death, especially kids dont knkw the risk!!!!!
There are maybe good points here in the resort, but this os because of above mentioned issues not important at all!
Also there is no possibility to reach the Lobby to complain, except you start walking for 15-30 minutes in the darkness to reach the Lobby!
I wish i can give 0 Stars!

We spent a Friday and Saturday in October there . The stress of Covid has affected everyone and it was nice to get away. The hotel has a fun decor and both the children ( aged 1 to 16) and the adults had a great time. The pools, the little golf course, the pool table, the entertainment was amazing and the food was so good with lots of choices at the COVID protected buffet! Lots of seafood every night and the morning omelet station became a fast favorite. If you are looking for a retreat for your family or your business this is the best place in Honduras: out of the way, quiet and yet fun!

Worst resort ever. Don't stay here. Want money for everything. Valet is pushed. Can't use a cart to move luggage or groceries. Must tip to have bellboy use cart. Pay $70 for non security watched parking. Pool attendent is harrasing and rude. Can't wait to leave tomorrow. Good riddance.

We (couple in our twenties) stayed at Palma Real for a week as part of a Conquest package bought from Redtag. We got the deluxe room for an extra couple of hundred bucks, and greatly enjoyed the balcony and ocean view, so that was well worth it. We can confirm that, at least during busy times, the basic room is definitely a step down (no balcony or view), so we were glad to have spent the money--we enjoyed a few games of cards in the warm breeze on the balcony, and found that it was a bit windy for cards anywhere else: you get the idea, balconies are nice. In general, the room was of a similar quality to a nice Days Inn or Best Western one might find in a small Canadian/US city. Very clean, great daily maid service, a bit musty smelling (hey--it's 30º and humid--that's a fact of life!) no bugs (though your door opens to the outside, so I sprayed the doorframe with Raid a couple of times just in case--they do, indeed, fog the entire resort from time to time, but how can you complain when Honduras is a malarial country?). We hardly used the AC, as it cooled off pretty nicely at night, and the room always felt comfortable, but we apppreciated the ceiling fan for circulation. The legendary remote control was, actually, not functioning, but who needs TV in a tropical paradise? (And the English TV selection was pretty limited anyway). Finally, the safe worked and it was comforting to have my laptop and money and so on locked up daily--on that note, it seems that we lost a skirt, but this may have been under the bed or something--at any rate, this could happen at any apartment building laundry room, so whatever. As to the location of the room and the noise, we were very happy, though light sleepers may be annoyed by the grounds crew, maids, disco, etc--a villa might be the best option for them, as these are handy yet sort of isolated. For us, it was nice to walk twelve paces for a refill on the delicious pina coladas!

Moving on to the food! Absolutely no complaints. There was suffcient variety at the buffet, and it was open most of the day (until 10 for breakfast, again for 3 hours at lunch, and then another 3-4 at dinner). The snack bar was fine if you can handle chicken wings and 7-11 style nachos, but really, for the price, this food was far above our expectations. There was also wine, beer, coffee, and fountain drinks at the buffet, and the water is all purified, so no worries about ice, etc. One bummer was the milk for the coffee , which they keep in a Bunn-O-Matic coffee carafe (can you say "icky milk skin"?), but we got around this by asking the waiters for "leche fria" from the back. The coffee was excellent otherwise. A word about the waiters and the a la carte dinner: amazing. The dinners were cute above all else. We had both a generic chicken meal and a decent filet mignon on separate nights (no reservation, but a smile for Edguardo and we were taken care of). As with many other aspects of the hotel, one wished one could be manager for a month to help them do simple things like dim the lights and use candles, but they are trying SO HARD, and everything from the busser girls to the two-man-band is just irrestible! As to health concerns, this is a poor country, and different from home. There were scattered stories of stomach issues (too much rum? sun?), but nothing seemed to set anyone back more than a day. I had a 24h fevery sick spell from an Edmonton McDonald's recently, so I wouldn't let this concern any prospective travellers (though some pepto in the suitcase is never a bad idea).

The pools were lovely, and open very late, which we enjoyed. It may be worth trying the pool by the a la carte restaurant if you want some quiet during the day, as the poolside bar does tend to crank the tunes a bit on the loud side. A special attraction to the mail pool was the "Blind Date" cave: you'll get it if you see it. A hot tub might have been nice at night, but you can't have everything! The beach was reasonably maintained (very clean yet not manicured) and the water, while sandy, was warm and fun. Stuff like the beach chairs could use a sprucing-up, but we never had a problem finding one, and the hammocks on the beach were appreciated. The grounds are well-kept. Don't imagine a 5 star in Vegas, but there is not a shred of garbage or a stray dog to be found.

There is a lot of fun to be had at this hotel. Our only regret was that we should have stayed another week so we might have 10 seconds of boredom! By day, we walked to the nearby town of Sambo Creek (about 1 h to the "left" along the beach). We wished we could have done this more than once, as the walk was gorgeous, the town fascinating (both gritty and friendly, with a nice restaurant, a store selling local run for $5/bottle, and many English-speaking locals who were very welcoming if you wanted to chat). We enjoyed the fish/coconut soup at the beachfront restaurant and ran into Fabio, a bellhop at the hotel who showed us his home and had us in for beer and a demo of his stereo! More Fabio later... We also rented a 4x4 in La Ceiba and took on the gruelling drive to the incredible Mayan ruins at Copan (400km each way). This is not something we would recommend for the faint of heart, as driving in Honduras is at least as scary as it sounds, but fun if you have the bottle for it! If you want to try, get a large, tough vehicle (potholes the size of porcupines come out of nowhere and boulders fil entire lanes of traffic) and TAKE YOUR TIME! Believe me! 60-70kph is plenty, and 30 in town is maybe too fast! The La Ceiba mall isn't much, but good for some nice, pricey souvenirs and a trip to Applebees. We bought some thermal mugs, something which the pro resort-goers showed was very useful at the hotel (take a 500mL daquiri to the beach and it stays cold!). Perhaps the highlight of our stay was the trip to the Cayos Cochinos with Wilfrid, the German diving school guy (located near the a la carte). He leaves every morning around 8--just show up if the breeze is light, and prepare for an amazing day! $55 gets you a ride to the islands and snorkelling gear-though be sure to ask for this in advance. The water was perfect, one boat had dolphins follow them, and if you are a snorkeller/diver, the reef is simply perfect. The lobster/fish lunch (~$10 + beer) was the best food of the trip, and worth the whole day just for that experience. The island people also sell come cute little shell necklaces and bracelets for very little money ($10 for two sets or so) and are a much better value than the mall shops. We also got a beachfront massage from Annie, who is a great gossip and really gets "in there" with the baby oil. A nice relaxer for $10. The water jungle was more of a laugh than anything, but definitely made an enjoyable morning--bring a few bucks (as with everywhere you go) to buy a beer and ice cream while watching fat bourgeois Honduran children attempting to mount inner tubes! I'm entering my footage for Honduras' Funniest Home Videos... The evenings were ok, but we had plenty of fun on our own. The disco was pretty lame after the second night, though the space was nice--just boring music and thin attendance. The theatre was hilarious and recommended. As with everything, they tried their hardest, and we were never a moment without a laugh or at least a big smile.

The staff at this resort couldn't have a nicer staff. Highlights for us included the aforementioned Fabio (25 year old Garifuna black guy with maple leaves head-to-toe), Annie the masseuse, all the receptionists and maids, Edguardo and Simon the waiters. There wasn't a frown to be found, and we received everything, from a toilet plunge to towels to matches, as soon as we asked. Tipping goes a long way to help these folks. They make $5/day. Literally. So if you can hit the bartender for $1 every morning, or kick Fabio or your maid even$5 at the end of your trip, just think of the difference this makes in their lives (Annie, for example, has a young son, and even high school in Honduras is not free!). We probably spent $100-150 on tips, and would have loved to have given more. I recommend buying some Honduran currency beforehand (order it at any CDN bank) as a Honduran 5 is worth 25c US--a good amount to have handy.

This is a very interesting place. The people are terrific, and the experience was generally perfect. If you are expecting a throbbing party or Sheraton-type luxury, stay home, or try Cancun. If you want a bit of adventure mixeed with your relaxation, you have that option at the Palma Real. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone that has the right attitude!

TDSB March break 2005.

Paid CDN$1580 for 2 including all taxes for my wife and I (30 and 31 years old)

Hotel direct phone number ------ (WARNIG $0.50 to $1.00 per min.)

Hotel web site: ------

Rated a 4 star, more like a 3 star. But very acceptable. Met great people had an awesome time! Well worth the cost.

While there you MUST take the Canopy Tour (or zip line tour) US$35! other countries charge over US$100!

Also, ask the front desk for Hector the cab driver. His local # is 440-0100 or cell 994-1760. For the same price as the bus, he will take you into town, show you around, translate, and help find whatever you are looking for.

We will post more later, including pictures!

My sister & I just returned from a wonderful week in Honduras March 27 to April 3rd. As one past review said, if you want a Cancun like trip, then go to Cancun; this is a much quieter paced resort/place. The resort was nice but what really made the trip was the country and the people. You can do the lying in the sun on the beach thing, but to make the most of your trip you need to go off the resort and experience the beautiful countryside and meet some of the people. It helps if you speak a little spanish, but if you are friendly then generally people are friendly back to you. Warning - do not book the day tours through Touraser, the tour company at the hotel; many people who did complained about overcrowding & being rushed. The snorkelling trip sent them out without fins, and delayed the boat coming back making for a dangerous trip in very rough waters. From past TripAdvisor reviews I had learned to talk to Wilfred at the dive house (located in between the 2 resorts by the theatre, www.dive-in-caribik.com); he offers the snorkelling at a cheaper rate and has all the equipment. I tried SCUBA diving for the first time and although I was nervous, it was a great experience. Wilfred also referred us to a different tour company for the day trips; www.hondurastouristoptions.com - ask for Frances or Oscar. We went on the white water rafting, canopy/hot springs & Pico Bonito tour through them for less than Touraser and would have done more but we ran out of time! They will pick you up from the resort and we had an excellent time with them (sometimes it was a private tour, just the 2 of us plus the guide, ask for Reinaldo on the Pico Bonito hike). We highly reccomend them as a great alternative to Touraser, which was presented by Conquest as the only choice.

As for the resort, it was nice (Honduran 4star/North American 3star). We paid the extra for the deluxe room to have a balcony, not realizing that some of the standard rooms in the Caribe section also had balconies. The picture of the resort in the Conquest book & on line is misleading; the Caribe section is not the villas shown at the back of the property, but actually another smaller resort a 2 minute walk down the beach with it's own pool & bar and is much quieter than the main hotel. Our room was fine although a mini-fridge would have been a nice addition. Some people in the Caribe section complained of no hot water, while we had scalding hot water and little cold in the deluxe room. We were the last group of Canadians to go for this season, so the ratio of staff to guest was high and the service was pretty good. The resort explodes on the weekend with the wealthier Hondurans who rent the villas in the back & have use of the resort.
Honduras is a 3rd world country, so try to remember that with tips to the maids/servers/guides (a little to us means a lot to them).
Overall we had a great time & will go back again in the future!

I had good coverage in the room, cafeteria and recreation areas. My cell phone also has data plan with good signal but wi-fi was good so I used that.

Hello Carrie, I would suggest you talk to them ASAP and request a thermostat be installed in your room’s AC unit, that alone should better your hospitality experience. February is a good month to visit, it’s not a holiday season here and you shouldn’t have to deal with precarious service due to a full property. Cheers!

The bus is perfectly safe, I take it in to town every week, you might have to stand a little way but it's only L20-25 (bring exact change in Lempiras) and it's perfectly safe for you and your kids (there are police checkpoints along the way, nothing bad will happen to you). Take the little bus with La Ceiba on the front (the big buses won't stop, they run direct from other cities). You can call a Moto-Taxi to take you from Palma Real to the main road (security has a few numbers or you can call Jose any time before 2pm @ +504-886-4549 or after 2pm call Orlando @ +504 9740-1311 (L40-50). I would say they try to run every 30 mins on the hour and half hour (try the Lychee's and buy some Almonds along the way but mostly relax and enjoy the experience).

It's about 18 Km (or 11 miles). This might take 20-30 minutes. Depends on your transportation, driver, traffic, delays, etc.

Did not stay in suite but booked rooms, had problem with hot water and ended up changing room. Christmas is not really celebrated but New Year is the celebration time. We used US $ for the outings and tips. Did the Pico Bonito tour and the tour of La Ceiba, history was very informative.
