Detailed Reviews
We just returned from staying in the camp casitas at Chaa Creek and had a wonderful time. At Macal River Camp you have full access to the beautiful resort, but a more authentic experience with howler monkey wake up calls and traditional Belizean breakfasts and dinners prepared and served in a group setting by a wonderful local family. The casitas have no electricity, but beautiful kerosene lamps are lit for you every evening and flush toilets and a shower house are on site. WiFi is available at the main resort and a communal power bank for charging phones is available in the open air dining area in camp. There are many activities at the resort run by knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides. We stayed four nights and could easily have stayed longer with all that Chaa Creek and the surrounding area had to offer. We have three kids age 9, 15, and 17 and they absolutely loved it.

It’s not only Cheers where everyone knows your name.
The staff at Chaa Creek pride themselves on knowing your name.
When you head to the bar, (where all of the drinks are made with the freshest of ingredients) you’ll be greeted by the most friendly staff...(Umberto, Louis, Hilberto, France, & Armaine)
Just to mention a few.
Your world class dining is served by Alice, Epi, Tishi, and many other wonderfully, friendly and accommodating staff.
Everything made here is very fresh and is extremely well balanced from a flavor perspective.
The grounds are meticulously manicured by a staff led by Jiggy. Even the River trail which leads you to the canoes is painstakingly maintained.
There are many on-site tours and activities such as horseback riding, swimming in the luxurious pool, hiking, Medicine trail guided tour, Safari, spa, Open hearth cooking experience- Luby was our instructor and was absolutely wonderful! There is a workshop near the horse stables where most of the beautiful, mahogany furniture is made.
If you prefer piece and quiet, this place is also perfect for that.
What I mention here is a scratch on the surface of the wonderful experience to be had at Chaa Creek!
We will absolutely be back!

We had a great experience at this hotel. When choosing a jungle lodge, it’s hard to find somewhere that both gives you a luxury experience with the jungle feel. This lodge does a great job of providing just that. Keeping that in mind, be aware there will be bugs and geckos in your room. You are in the jungle. There are mosquitos too obviously, so I’d recommend bug spray.
We were in room 1. It had a pretty nice view of the jungle canopy. We could hear howler monkeys nearly each morning. On site we saw toucans, parrots, iguanas, and other cool wildlife.
We ate breakfast here every day and it was a varying selection each morning, our favorite was the breakfast burrito. The coffee is excellent.
We did not book our tours with the hotel, but we did the ATM tour and Tikal with Hawiil tours which were excellent.
We ate at the lodge for dinner two nights (the other night at Guava Limb). Both meals were delicious, albeit a bit pricey (the meal at the Guava Limb was similar but much cheaper). However, you pay for the ambiance of the restaurant which is lovely.
Every staff member we encountered was nothing short of fantastic, from the wait staff to the bartenders to the security guards. We would like to highlight in particular the security guard George who, when we were on our way to dinner, pointed out our flat tire and immediately helped us change it to the spare. He refused a tip when we tried to give him one but his help was way above and beyond and we would have been sunk without him. He then coordinated with the concierge, Benjamin to patch the tire, then eventually source a replacement.Thank you George!!!! And thank you to Benjamin at the concierge who took care of that process for us.
That being said, Chaa Creek is located 4 miles from the main road down a bumpy, rocky dirt road. There’s a good chance this is where we popped our tire. In the future, I would not have rented a car and just took the hotel shuttle (there is also construction on the main highway right now).

There lots to absolutely love about this place. The 400 acres and natural beauty. The wide range of well-maintained trails through the rain forest. The excellent cuisine that is fresh, local and mostly organic. The staff is very friendly and kind. The cottages are very nice. We were lucky to get a very private one. Some are in the open; others are nestled in the trees.
So the downside? Our room was musty, and the mattress had a strong mildew smell. When we complained the next day, they offered to change our room but that room had the same issue. Instead, we had them strip the bed and mattress cover, disinfect and put on all new linens. This did not solve the issue. No amount of fresh sheets is going to hide the smell of a mildew mattress. When we reported in the next morning, the response was dismissive. ‘Oh I guess we’ll need a new mattress’. We were originally going to extend our stay but left because of this.
The other downside were the on-site tours. The birdwatching with Alex was great. The horse ride which was billed as a 2-21/2 hour informative tour in the rain forest was a 90 minute ride (walk) with no information unless we asked and it was just the two of us. Guide was very nice but told us very little
Concierge services were very good.
This place is very expensive and we expected more. The staff should have been more tuned in to the mildew issue.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is in the jungle along the Macaul River in western Belize about a two hour drive from Belize City. The setting is stunning and lush. Animal life is abundant. The service is personal and 5 star meals are equal to many places I have stayed at much higher prices. There were a variety of choices to accommodate any taste. Activities include visits to Mayan ruins, ziplining, cave tubing, traveling on an enormous pontoon through a beautiful lake with waterfalls, visiting an on-site butterfly farm, horseback riding—more activities than our group could do in 5 days. We were there in the cool season December through February. Most rooms are not air conditioned and I was surprised how comfortable I was. Our group included college students and older adults, however we saw many young children and they could safely have the freedom to roam everywhere. I want to return with my young grandchildren. I felt safer from COVID there than in the US—Very stringent cleaning and health requirements including negative COVID tests prior to arrival. It is described as an eco lodge but much more luxurious than the eco lodges I have seen. If you want air conditioning, choose the modern Ix Chel villas. I was very comfortable in a Macaul River Suite. A secluded, ‘get away from it all” vacation for any age group!

I was looking for somewhere new to visit and suprise my mother for her birthday and decided to give Chaa Creek a try. They were offering a special rate for Belizeans which included activities as well. I will say that I wish the offer included the food as well but the prices were very reasonable and the food was delicious, especially the breakfast. Upon arriving we were greeted by the parking lot where they have a full washing station. We were then taken on a tour of the property while being told about all their protocols to keep with social distancing, and received our welcome drinks. I really liked our cottage, which included an indoor and outdoor shower. After settling in we decided to go by the pool which is absolutely beautiful and has an amazing view. I was given a WhatsApp number that I was able to use to message them to stay in contact. While we were by the pool I messaged them to make dinner reservations for that evening and also requested an iron for our room. They responded very quickly and after arriving back at our room someone arrived with the iron. The setting at dinner was beautiful with all the candles on the tables and the food arrived quickly and was delicious. The next morning we went back for breakfast and again the food was very good. We decided to go check out the butterfly farm and the natural history centre and really enjoyed both. Overall, it was a great experience at a beautiful place with a very friendly staff. I can't wait to make another trip.

Although we did not have one of the most expensive rooms at Chaa Creek the accommodation was certainly the best that we stayed in during our tour of Belize. The room was spacious , fabulous decoration and art work and comfy. Lovely outdoor shower and a fantastic bathroom and products. Views from the balcony over lush jungle and woken by howler monkeys and toucans.
Loved the pool area - I had the pool to myself. Food was excellent. Staff were kind, helpful, knew our names. I lost my reading glasses when I first arrived in Belize and mentioned this to the front desk.
A new pair (cost $2.50) were procured within hours.
There are so many activities and a wonderful spa. It was my husband's 70th birthday and we were treated to a special meal by the pool with candlelight. Very much appreciated.
The best part of our trip to Belize was a trip over the border to Tikal with Miss Yumi. We had lovely weather and the best day ever. The whole experience of crossing the border to the visit to Tikal and posing for Star Wars selfies was memorable.
The owners live on site and are hands on - and this shows in a really well-run friendly resort. Hearing the history of the project is amazing. Loved our time here.

I have just returned from a lovely stay at Chaa Creek where every element of the stay felt safe, private and truly enjoyable.
From the warm welcome from Benjamin who walked us to our rooms while guiding us through all the new enhances health and safety measures in place, to the extra signage and hygiene station put in place around the property everything has been thought of.
Also, staying at Chaa Creek in the heart of the jungle the property and location naturally lends itself to a socially distanced vacation.
From spacious and private cabanas, al fresco dining and countless outdoor activities – being distanced from others comes naturally.
I would highly recommend Chaa Creek to those looking for a safe and worry-free vacation.

This lodge is an outstanding destination and has world class service in a relatively remote location. Most of the staff has worked on the property for a decade or more.
We chose a villa with air conditioning (the jungle is humid and temperatures are in the 80s in March) and were delighted with our room, nestled in verdant tropical landscaping on the edge of the jungle. A surprise was our private "butler" who brought breakfast, ice, scheduled tours and answered all our questions with unfailing good humor.
David, a guide and naturalist, drove us on a wonderful RTV tour of the jungle trails and another day l tour on the jungle trail and another day gave a private tour of the incredible Mayan ruins very close to the Lodge. It was a wonderful way to learn about the history of the Cayo region, which abuts Guatemala..
The couple who established this lodge in the 1970s before before a road was built accessed the property by the river which is still a feature of the property--quite a story which we learned about when we met their daughter.
I would mark off a bit for the food, which was unremarkable. However we were told that they are reviewing the menu and planning revisions. This was not a major drawback as the environmnent is incredible and the staff superb. And somehow, no bugs to contend with, although there is an on premise butterfly farm.
Belize has easy to navigate entry requirements (vaccination certificate or PCR test) and is welcoming visitors while maintaining safe COVID protocols.

I travelled solo and felt like I was visiting family members far away from home because the atmosphere and staff were very friendly, caring, attentive and warm natured.
If your budget allows - treat yourself and book the Ix Chel Villa which are newly built villas situated in the heart of the jungle, come with a private jacuzzi and outdoor shower, floor to ceiling windows facing the jungle scenery, lots of privacy and a personal butler. I was fortunate enough to have been upgraded from a standard room to the Ix Chel Villa number 28 and couldn't have felt more comfortable and well looked after.
The food is prepared with attention to detail, freshest locally sourced ingredients and the service in the restaurant in bar is very quick and professional.
I especially appreciated and enjoyed a horseback riding lesson with Teddy, who is a genuine and really lovely person and taking care of his beautiful 25 horses is his life's passion.
The staff at the reception were also very helpful with organising a day tour for me and the other two guests to Guatemala, which is just a 20 minute drive from the Lodge to visit the Tikal Ruins and experience local Guatemalan culture.
Am most definitely planning to return to The Lodge with my family and stay longer to explore the butterfly farm and the medicinal walk, as I could only stay for three days this time.

Current prices are not posted on the website but last I knew it was about $40 US for dinner which included an appetizer, soup, main course, and dessert.
We stayed there in May for several nights. It’s quite a nice accommodation, except that there is only air conditioning in the bedrooms and not in the living area. The other downside to it is it’s more like a 10 minute walk downhill to the front desk than five minutes. However, they will give you a ride to the dining/pool area on request and back. It’s walking distance to the spa. Because I am a senior citizen with some mobility issues, I wouldn’t stay there again, but it would be fine, indeed, quite enjoyable, for most more mobile people.
The market is a mix of wonderful produce, some nice handcrafts, and a huge garage sale. It's a good way to experience the local culture and I have purchased some beautiful items. I felt that 1 - 2 hours was plenty of time there. I did not do the canoe ride, just requested a van ride there and back. I think it was about $60 for the round trip.
Leave the heels at home! You'll probably be walking on uneven surfaces around the resort so wear something comfortable. The resort, as pretty much all of Belize, is very casual. Just dress comfortable, shorts and casual shirts, sundresses, etc.
