The Howard Johnson by Wyndham Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground comes highly recommended for its cleanliness and the friendly service provided by its staff. While some guests find great value in its affordability and proximity to Disneyland, others point out extra fees and room quality as drawbacks.
The water park and updated rooms are a hit among families, although there's some feedback about noise from the freeway. Despite mixed reviews on room space and amenities, the unique Disney-themed atmosphere and convenient location near dining options make it a popular choice for many visitors.

On the whole we enjoyed our stay as it was comfortable and when windows were closed the traffic was well buffered. Really appreciated the black out blinds that helped us to sleep. Seeing the fireworks from our balcony was also a treat. We were sorry to see the tall trees removed in front of building 1 however we did understand the reasoning as some rooms on that side would have the firework view blocked for them. The 10 minute walk to Disneyland was also not too much at the end of the day. We appreciated the late checkout option until 1 PM however only to be told on day of departure that restricted us the ability to use all the extension since we could not modify our shuttle pickup within 24 hours. Check out hotel website for shuttle services to get small discount. Maybe changing standard checkout time to noon would be a better overall service to guests. We did not get to enjoy the pool /waterpark as much as we had hoped as several times we were back too late at or after 10PM when the hot tub would have been beneficial to our sore feet. The lobby store was a bit pricey for some items and it's worth your time to walk to the stores past Disneyland for more selection and better prices. There is no breakfast included but we found that McDonalds or the IHOP were good options as they were on the way. Yet, with housekeeping only every other day it was a bit of a trial to get replacement towels at one point we were told we had surpassed our limit - well with 4 people in the room showering morning & night - it was hard to keep track who's towel was who's. More garbage bags left in the room would be helpful along with extra cups for drinking. Once used it is impossible to reuse these items. With only 4 washer/dryer machines for over 6 buildings then only to have them in just one building was restrictive. As we know people are not diligent about coming back on time to remove their articles so others can use the machines. We were appreciative of the lobby bathroom since it came in handy several times - after all with 4 people it's hard to judge if timing will be good or not. Check out /in were seamless plus all office staff were extremely helpful with any questions or requests even the sewing kit I needed was available.

Pros: Clean room, light and bright decor, stayed in 1710, nice grounds for such a small foot print, 5 min walk down Harbor Blvd to the light to cross to Disneyland Resort, 10 min to be in the central hub between DCA and DL. Lots of restaurants close by the HoJo such as Mimi's Cafe, McDonalds, IHOP, Denny’s, and a few more. Staff very friendly and helpful. Getting extra towels was very fast. Gift shop is very nice.
Con’s: if you stay in the tower bldg don’t stay on the freeway side, like we did on 1710. Road noise can be very loud at times and you can hear it all night. No shower wand, water fluctuates between hot and cold, and water pressure is up and down. Could use some more accessible outlets. Tv issues, not sure if it was the tv or the remote control. Again not sure what the real issue is but the tv does not turn on when you try to power it up, it takes about one full minute and constantly hitting the power button before it will turn on, we reported the issues and sent a text that it was fixed, no it wasn’t. I have owned many tv’s and even the cheapest tv I own does not take this long to power on. Additionally, it is painful to control the volume from the remote, it’s either blasting loud or on whisper mode. The phone in the room did not work at first, you could not tell what f you were getting through to the front desk as you could not hear anything. Yes, all the cables were connected. They did fix the phone.
We did not use the pool area as it was too cold, but if you have little ones it looked like they would have lots of fun.
Bottomline, lessons learned, I would definitely stay here again but choose the pool or theme park view.

We stayed at the hotel 8 next. The rooms in building 2 are very nicely decorated. Clean and had views of the pool. With among an ideal hotel to visit the Disney parks. Just 8 minutes walk to the entrance. Parking directly at the building however 25 dollars a night. Gastronomy around The hotel is abundant so you can reach everything on foot quite well. Great starting point for further excursions. By car you are in about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic in and around LA.
The water playground/hotel pool to which only hotel guests have access is great for the children. Supervisors and fresh towels were always on site

We just finished up a 5 night stay here with multiple other families. First, the reception staff are amazing! They are so kind and accommodating. Our room was in Building 1 so the remodel was nice. The room was spacious and comfortable. My complaint is that they were working on replacing wallpaper right outside our room so while we were trying to take an afternoon rest, there was sanding and work being done right outside our door. The pools were nice and the kids enjoyed them. The pool staff were ridiculous! It was like trying to enter a prison to get into the pool. You have to listen to their rules EACH TIME you enter and the required wristbands for 5 days are annoying. How you expect young kids to want to wear that for multiple days is beyond me. When you FINALLY get into the pool you get reminded to the point of insanity to not move the pool furniture. It's way too much! One of the main reasons we choose this hotel was for the pool and splash pad but the pool staff made it more trouble than it was worth. I doubt I would stay here again.

Thank you for writing a review of your recent stay with us. We are thrilled that you found our reception staff amazing and that you enjoyed a remodeled room in Building 1. However, we sincerely apologize for the renovation noise while you were trying to take a nap. We try to schedule any loud maintenance work outside our quiet hours of 10 pm to 7 am. Additionally, while we are happy that you enjoyed our pool areas, we appreciate your honest feedback regarding our pool staff and their enforcement of rules. We strive to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all guests and understand your frustration with the repeated reminders and wristband policy. We will review our procedures to ensure a better balance between safety measures and guest comfort in the future. We hope that you consider staying with us again to allow us to opportunity to serve you better in the future.

General phone support was awful. I tried to book a stay and the price changed WHILE I was checking out. Even though I could still see the price on my browser, it wouldn’t let me book. I called support and the best they could do was offer me a price that was hundred of dollars more. Awful bait and switch and the main reason for the negative review.
Luckily, I was able to book the same original, lower price through Agoda. Reluctantly, I booked the trip.
When arriving, the desk staff were AWESOME. So kind and helpful. Checking in was a great experience and anytime I needed something, they were happy to help.
A lot of reviews said the highway noise was problematic. This was NOT my experience. We were in a Kid/Family suite in building 1 (the one with the bunk bed and pull out sofa in one room and king bed in the other) and the highway was barely audible and definitely not an issue.
The room wasn’t perfect though. Insanely, the kids room is the one with the door to the hallway, so kids could just leave in the night without their parents knowing. Inversely, parents can’t leave the room after kids are asleep without risking waking them. Seems like a huge oversight to design it this way.
Some other oddities: there is no lock in the parent’s bedroom, there is no door or curtain on the parent’s shower, the shower head is low (about 6 feet high from the floor), the AC is as much colder in the parents room than the kids’ room when set to the same temp, the AC is loud, the TV remote is awful and unresponsive making it virtually unusable.
Now, this all sounds very negative but overall it was a fine experience. We don’t hear any noise from other hotel guests. Though the remote was awful and the TV lacked streaming apps other than Netflix (Disney+, hel-looo!), it was a great size and one in each room. The kids bed configuration was perfect for our 3 young kids and it was nice that there was a bathroom in each room. The location wasn’t the closest, but it WAS quite walkable to the park. Bummer parking wasn’t included but the lot seemed safe (key access required) and sized well enough. The waterpark and pool were kind of underwhelming but hey, better than nothing! The little shop in the building was convenient but you’re paying a huge premium for it which didn’t feel great. The luggage carts weren’t very useful because they lacked hooks on the top bar, but, as with the pool, better than nothing.
Overall, we’ll probably try someplace else next year, but are open to trying again sometime if other places on the strip end up being worse.

We came to Disneyland California for our honeymoon from the UK.
Our stay at Howard Johnson was brilliant from start to finish. We were welcomed with a lovely honeymoon hamper and the staff were so lovely. It is located so close to Disneyland and a quick walk home after a long day in the parks. We also came back during the day for a rest and pool breaks and the location meant we didn't miss out on any time, we could just relax and enjoy our stay.
The beds are so comfortable and the bathrooms are so good with two sinks which makes it so easy to get ready in the morning. There is a fridge, microwave and coffee machine in the room. The fridge in the room was also so handy and there is enough storage in the room to unpack and store clothes. We stayed in the refurbished building one and it could not have been in a better location. The shop on site is also super handy.
The pool area was lovely too, we were checked in really quickly to the pool, given towels and could choose where we wanted, tables or loungers. It felt nice and secure and staff were all super friendly. We used the pool area almost every day of our stay and enjoyed it every time. We didn't go to the water playground as we don't have children, but the area looked fun when we were walking by.
There are many locations to eat nearby and we didn't need a car as we could walk almost everywhere we needed in the area. We got uber for locations that were a little bit further away.
There are laundry facilities (small fee) on site which was really handy for us during our stay, it is right near the pool so we did a few washes and used the dryer while we were relaxing by the pool, it has a timer on the display so you know when to return to collect your clothes.
We will definitely be returning to Howard Johnson the next time we visit Disneyland, we would not want to stay anywhere else as our experience there was so good! Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a lovely, friendly, clean place to stay near Disneyland .

Hotel had lowest price available compared to other hotels on Harbour Blvd. All staff encountered were friendly and courteous. Room 5102 is closest to the freeway - I would recommend anyone booking specifically request not being in Building 5. WiFi unreliable but improved when we called tech support. Our room had a musty smell, perhaps replace carpet. Garden pool water temperature could have been warmer. About 10 minute walk to Disney security screening. Young kids would like water park. On site convenience store handy. You can check your bags if arriving before checkin time, or after checkout. Bottom line - I would stay here again if price lower than other nearby properties. It's definitely an older property, over two decades old. Room only cleaned every second day - hotels should be reducing their rates if they are cutting back on service.

The staff is friendly and helpful, but the hotel overall just seems too stressed to handle normal operations and a full house. While most issues that arose were handled well by the staff, there just kept being issues throughout our quick 2-day stay:
• Parking lot is very tight with only one entrance. Upon arrival, we pull up and see the sign requesting a key card, so we keep driving to what looks like a main entrance only to discover it's roped off and before we know it, we're almost on the highway again. Turning around, we pull back into the entrance and finally read in very tiny print that we can call the front desk from there for entry. • At check-in, there is only one person helping guests and he's tied up for ages with an older guest who wants to have an endless conversation. Multiple other employees are coming and going, but not acknowledging us. • They write our room number down incorrectly when giving us our keys, so we have to drag our bags all the way back to the lobby to fix it. To their credit, they gave us a better room on a floor that didn't smell (like the first one did) and comped us the $25 parking fee. • There is a splash pad and then a second real pool, but real pool is closed for the rest of the day due to an incident. Splash pad is okay, but no place to actually dunk and swim which the kids want to do and which we promised them... • They have towel service and walk you to chairs, but there was only a single chair available. Were also told they might restrict entrance to guests if it gets too crowded. • Internet went out the morning we were leaving...
On the plus side, location is good, though not quite as close as other hotels. Gift shop/mini-market is well stocked and open late. And as mentioned, the staff is friendly and tries to rectify situations as best they can.

We took our 7 and 11 year old grandsons to Disneyland and selected the suite of 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which worked well for us. Our bed was comfortable but the bottom bunk for the boys had little head clearance and the 11 year old opted to open the sofa couch and sleep there. The room has only paper cups for drinks and no other utensils or dishes. We took cereal, paper dishes and plastic utensils so we could have breakfast in the room. The bathroom lights have a motion detector and switch on full force at night if one uses the bathroom. There is a way to stop it but it only lasts for a very short while. This was a problem when the kids needed the bathroom at night. The pool area was fun for the kids and the hotel is very well maintained. It is about a 10 minute walk to the gate of Disneyland. I-5 runs along the back of the building but we barely heard any traffic and it did not disturb our sleep due to the construction of the building.

This hotel is ... ok. They bill themselves as a "retro" feel - which is just a way to cover a lot of missing updates. The pool is alright, though the lifeguard literally followed us around in the tiny pool, which was pretty annoying. The waterpark was fun, though they struggled to stay staffed enough to keep the slide open -which wouldn't have been so hard if they hadn't needed to dedicate a staff member to aggressively check wrist bands at the door.
Value wasn't that great - I'm a Platinum Wyndam member, and my one-nite stay here was 30k points - which can get you a much nicer location. On top of that, they charged for a rollaway bed (even though I booked for 5 people in a two queen room), almost charged for late check out (though they ended up comping it) etc. There's no on-site breakfast, either, though there are plenty of local restaurants.
Overall, I wouldn't mind staying here again, but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way, and there are plenty of good-value options close by that I'd probably opt for first.

Hi - in the past I've stayed at Anaheim HoJo and then got an Uber to Universal for the day. Its not too bad, about a 90 min trip. Additionally I've hired a car from Anaheim and done a day trip to Santa Monica - similar travel time (depending on the traffic), it worked but was a big day.
My most recent trip (March/April this year) I stayed at the HoJo for Disney but then shifted hotels to one closer to Universal (the Garland) and it was nice being 10 mins away, a bit more relaxed. Likewise nice for all the other attractions at the end of town
There are more places to choose from in the Anaheim area.
