Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

The JW Marriott Washington, DC enjoys a prime location favored by many travelers for its easy access to attractions like the White House. However, the hotel's service and amenities receive mixed reviews, with some guests enjoying comfortable rooms and others pointing out inefficiencies and missing features such as a pool.
Guests have called out the lack of value, noting high costs for extras and services that don't meet expectations. While the cleanliness of the rooms is often praised, the atmosphere and room conditions are considered outdated by several reviewers.

Detailed Reviews

While the location of this hotel was great - we’ve also stayed at the Willard across the street and had a far better experience. From the start we had to ask for help to unload our bags at the valet, which should have been a sign that this was not the luxury experience we expected at a JW Marriott The rooms are pretty basic, housekeeping left a lot to be desired during our stay - one day not even showing up until nearly 5p while we were changing for dinner.
We also had two rooms and they put us on separate floors, even though we’d pre-requested adjoining rooms or adjacent if that wasn’t possible. We did appreciate the view though.
We ate breakfast at the hotel only one day - it was not very good at all and we chose to eat elsewhere the following days.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay and the hotel and facilities met our expectations. This location is close to the White House and Smithsonian museums, which are within a 20 minute walk. The staff was friendly and provided any extra room supplies we requested. The front desk, concierge and luggage desks were well attended on every day of our stay.
The room was comfortable, updated and meticulously clean. Our room faced the interior courtyard and did not have a view. This was not a problem since I prefer the shadowed rooms which keep the sunlight and Washington heat out on days I sleep later. The bed and pillows were very comfortable with the consistency we have enjoyed across the Marriott brand.
We did not dine in the hotel but did buy food from a limited menu at the convenience store and gift shop in the lobby. Single serve beer and wine were not available to bring back to the room but there is a reasonably priced liquor store adjacent to the hotel.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
Rooms were very clean and in good condition. Basic view of a courtyard. Room was nice but unremarkable for the level of a JW. Staff were all very nice. A definite positive was the room facing the courtyard was very quiet both from outside noise and other guests along the same floor. Was also surprised that given the large size of the hotel, security to the elevator/guest floors was absent. Overall this is a large convention/meeting hotel with really long hallways and nothing disgusting or special about it. I’ve seen other JW’s like Marco Island, Fl and yes this isn’t a resort like Marco, but definitely pushing the envelope here with a JW flag.

The JW Marriott in Washington DC is a nice hotel, but definitely not worthy of the JW brand. The amenities at this hotel are not JW quality. The bar is small and understaffed. Room service was quick but delivered in a paper bag, everything served in disposable containers with plastic ware. The lobby is very loud, especially with in-house events going on. Don't get suckered into paying for a Monument View unless you get a high floor. Very small front entrance usually clogged with cars. The best thing about the hotel is that it's within walking distance of the national mall and most memorials. The rooms were clean.

It would be difficult to find a flaw in our recent stay at the JW Marriott in Washington D.C. We went to the nation's capitol to be tourists and using the Marriott as the hub for our many spokes of sightseeing couldn't have been a better choice.
We were determined to walk, and walk we did...nearly 58,000 steps in three days. The Marriott gave us the central location to start and finish our adventures, just as we had envisioned.
Starting in the hotel lobby upon arrival we could tell immediately this is a 5-Star hotel at 4-star prices. All at once the JW Marriott is clean, friendly and accommodating. Staff is kind, respectful and genuinely gives an aura of caring that you have an enjoyable stay. There is just enough "buzz" in the hotel to create a sense of vibrancy without being over the top. The lobby is comfortable for sitting, waiting or having a drink at the bar. There is a first-class workout room, a decent on-site restaurant and upon asking, we also found a hidden gem of an inner courtyard where you could grab some fresh air and quiet.
Our room was comfortable with a great view (courtesy of our reservation getting a bit messed up and the night manager falling all over himself to correct the situation). It was quiet, had a good size bathroom with high end bath products and a coffee maker.
If you have a car, as our friends did, be prepared to pay $65 a day extra for parking. Next time back in Washington D.C. there is no reason for us to look beyond the JW Marriott. We will stay there again without hesitation.

There is a grand entrance when you walk in and you see how vast it is and open in the center. There are plenty of staff to help if you need it. There are plenty of places to sit and sip your drink or coffee, read, etc. on several floors. The rooms feel open and airy. The bed is quite comfortable. Our view was spectacular with the Washington Monument right outside our window along with a beautiful sunset. There is an electric shade to raise and lower so the sun doesn't get the room hot if you don't want it to shine right in. The restaurant has a full breakfast buffet with an omelet station. Though, there is a menu to order from if you wish. We tried the buffet and also ordered brisket tacos off of the menu. The brisket tacos did not have very much meat so you couldn't really taste the meat. And when you did, not very much flavor. That part was disappointing. The buffet and omelet were very good though! Your stay will include a daily destination fee which is still somewhat of a mystery as to what it is for, since they will offer some attractions for free to take advantage of the destination fee that you are paying regardless of whether you do or not. You also get a discount in the restaurant, though you have to make sure they include that when you check out. The elevators were interesting as you push one button on a panel to go up and then it flashes the elevator (A to F) that will take you up, so you have to watch which one opens (they could be behind you!). The evening restaurant/bar has some tasty appetizers as well. If you do drive to the hotel, there is a valet to park your car elsewhere, so hence, a daily parking fee. All in all a great stately hotel with which is perfectly located to museums, etc. but you have to pay attention to the details on your bill! We, of course, will stay here again.

That was the response from the Duty Manager Derrick when I asked to speak to him about the absurd waste at the hotel.
He was on his phone and visibly sighed when I approached.
My complaint was the copious amounts of extras delivered to the room with each hot drink I ordered. No less than 8 sachets of sugar/sweetener and 2 pots of honey with each order. All delivered in several plastic bags each time and with plastic spoons.
Derrick could not have been less interested in my challenge if he’d tried.
Ultimately, all of Marriott’s customers as well as the environment are paying for this unnecessary waste. Next to the coffee machine in the room is a plentiful supply of sugar etc.
Especially given the rates being charged, the hotel needs to employ managers who are more willing to engage in conversation with its customers about what they want.
Otherwise the hotel was fine. I didn’t see any of the run down issues reported by others.

I was quite disappointed in this JW which was dated and did not feel like a luxury hotel particularly once you got to the room floors and the room itself. Housekeeping didn't even show up the first full day and I was out from 9am until 10pm. On the second I made sure to request extra housekeeping essentials so I could ensure I got some service..The little shop on the ground floor is convenient, but that is about the only good thing I have to say.

The location of this hotel is amazing!! You can easily walk to many DC attractions and there are many great restaurants nearby. The lobby is beautiful and there are many well appointed sitting areas and work stations. The staff is mostly friendly.
I did not give this hotel a five star rating due to the very small rooms and small beds and the extremely expensive parking which is valet only so on top of the $69 per night parking. You are also tipping each time you need to drive your car.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for cleanliness and location and good service.

If you are a Platinum Elite or higher then do not stay here unless you have no other choice. There is no breakfast, the exec lounge is closed, and on top of that, they have decided FOR YOU that you will take the 1,000 points welcome gift and that YOU WILL take 1,000 points per night for having no lounge. In order to get breakfast here expect to pay $$$$ so those point values are actually putting you in the negative. Additionally, rooms are small and be prepared to not recieve an upgrade.
I've been Platinum for over 6 years now, and this is just sad. When a "name brand" business can't fulfill what is required, they should be willing to go above and beyond to make up for it. Not offer less just to save a few dollars. In the end, all your loyal Marriott people will stop coming here, and rooms will be filled with customers that don't care how they leave the room...making every single room more expensive to clean.
Full disclosure, after calling for 2 managers and pulling up the benefits on my phone, I was given $10 a day credit (which I was owed anyways) and $100 credit for the lounge being closed (which was also owed to me based on the rules of Marriott). Now I'm stuck paying ~20$pp per day for breakfast for 4 days.
Courtyard or Residence Inn never sounded as appealing as it does now.

It's the kind with the little pods. Not sure what they are called or the brand but it's the coffee filter with coffee grounds trapped in side type.
Depends on what direction your room/window faces.
I am not sure- we were there for New Year’s Eve and not swimming
