Nestled in the heart of the city, Citizenm Washington DC Capitol garners praise for its chic and modern vibe and its prime location near top attractions. However, guests have called out the compactness of the rooms, suggesting that space is at a premium, despite the rooms' clean and high-tech appeal.
While the hotel's contemporary amenities are a hit, opinions are split on the value it offers, with some citing steep prices and additional fees. The service at Citizenm Washington DC Capitol elicits mixed reactions, ranging from commendations for staff efficiency to critiques of poor customer experiences.

Detailed Reviews

A great option for travelers seeking a central location. Its proximity to attractions and restaurants makes it convenient for exploring the city. While the rooms are on the smaller side, they are clean and well-maintained. The iPad-controlled TV and lights can be a bit challenging to navigate, and the bathroom setup with the sink outside might take some getting used to. Noise from neighboring rooms can be an issue, and amenities like toothpaste and shaving kits are located in the lobby. The small fridge and safe are basic, but sufficient. The efficient check-in and check-out process using the iPads and 24/7 staff is a plus. Overall, CitizenM offers a good value for its location and amenities, but travelers should be aware of the smaller room size and potential noise issues.

When I enter my room, there's a smell reminiscent of a mix between a sewer and the subway, not too strong, but enough to be annoying. I asked the front desk for deodorizer, but no matter how much we spray, the smell comes back within a minute.
Other than that, everything is pretty good. The room is indeed small, but it's sufficient for solo travelers to open their suitcases and there is no risk of rolling off the bed. The cleanliness isn't spotless, but it exceeds the average standard of American hotels. The quiet and very light-blocking room provides me with adequate sleep. The staff at the front desk are also very friendly.
The best part is there are no mysterious additional charges that often appear in hotels of the same price range; the price paid at the time of booking is all that needs to be paid.
By the way, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower/shampoo gel, and conditioner are provided. Bottled water is chargeable, and there is no nearby supermarket.

Overall would stay again. Staff attitudes varied widely, some bing really nice, others were not so much.
Rooms are small but have nice tech features and the bed was pretty comfortable. The bethroom door does not latchnor even close all the way, and there was not a vent fan in the bathroom space, so that was less than ideal for such a small area. You can also hear everything happening in there from the bed area, so only stay here if you are close and comfortable with the other person in your room.
Food we had from the canteen was just ok. Didnt have drinks so cant speak to the bar. You are better off finding a place to eat in the city.
The lighting in the rooms is nice, and storage under the bed can fit a whole open carryon sized suitcase.
Location was also convenient to most of the museums downtown so walking was easy.

If you're looking for a great location, CitizenM has a great location within easy walking distance to the National Mall, Smithsonian Museums and more. But, these rooms are unlike any I've stayed in before, so some thought needs to be given, especially if you're sharing the room with someone else. I was not, which made the accommodations acceptable for me.
First, the room was pretty small. Not a lot of space for your stuff. All the rooms are the same, and the bed is right up against the three walls. So, two people is possible, but you can't get out without waking up the other person. The bathroom / shower also has frosted glass on the outside between it and the rest of your room, so again, this can be awkward if sharing a room with a friend. The room has a very nice blackout shade, which means no light seepage when you're sleeping. The lights, climate, TV, etc. are all controlled by an in room ipad. There is a breakfast on site, which is convenient. It is not included in your room cost, and in my opinion, it's price (about $21 with tax). There were only a few food selections (scrambled eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes, and an assortment of breads), and they remained the same throughout my stay.

This place is truly absurd. If you ever thought “Gee, I would like to stay in one of those IKEA closets that is conveniently in a dead night zone” then this is the place for you!
The room is exactly the length of a bed. No joke! The bathroom is in the room but inadequate unless you want to watch your partner’s outline visible as they use the facilities. Storage? Who needs it? The room is worse than an inside staff room on a budget cruise; however, it’s available at full price.
To trick you into believing this is all acceptable they put cool photos of young folks everywhere. It’s like the youth saying “Hey, we like paying premium prices for a third of a room.
Want to iron in your room? Oh no, there’s an ironing heaven closet for that. You know like sharing a hostel at exclusive pricing. Oh and the equipment they offer is top of the line Kmart. Ya, I said it.
Want to eat at the roof top restaurant? Well you better have a reservation because the 10 people they already have is way too much for a 70 seat restaurant. But hey you can look at the view of the building next door. Skibbidy!
Elevators don’t work with your key card but they can do that for you. And why have a self check in but you need to work with an “ambassador” to input your id and credit card??? Isn’t that just checking in really?
Everything in the room is controlled by an iPad. That’s fun when needing to turn lights on in the middle of the night or change the tv channel, which none of us want to do as we stream are own stuff. Well you can do that, just login to our WiFi and set up an account. Nice! Can I give you a retinal scan too please???
Okay let’s go out for some nightlife…wrong location! But you can pay extra for gourmet popcorn that tastes incredibly like microwave popcorn. want a draft beer? They are all out but can give you a can with 4 oz less for the same price. Please please please stay somewhere that will treat you like a paying adult!

Response from Manager citizenM Washington Capitol, Guest Services / Front Office at Citizenm Washington Dc Capitol
Responded 31 Dec 2024
Dear 614MuseumMike, Thank you for taking your time to review citizenM Washington Capitol hotel. Indeed, citizenM's concept differs from the typical traditional hotel. Our rooms offer just enough amenities for the most comfortable night sleep, awesome refreshing shower and other essentials needed for a quick business trip or a getaway. Need of anything else at all? Our team is happy to provide you with something quick like a dental kit, or suggest where to get any other necessities. Our centralized location always ensures that the exploring of the city (wherever your travels take you) is easy to navigate to. As evident from numerous positive reviews, many Guests enjoy our concept and find it extremely convenient. But, we understand that it may not be to everyone's taste. I thank you for your feedback, and will be sure to apply even more improvements to the quality of offerings and service. Best of luck in your travels and beyond, citizenZuly

I was put on floor 3, the same floor they were doing construction on rooms, there was so much dust in the air it set the fire alarm off. As you can imagine the nights sleep was almost impossible, we had a very difficult time breathing. This place is in such a good location, but stupid choices like leaving this floor open for people to pay for a room is beyond ridiculous. There was no maid service in our room, I assume the maids thought our room was part of construction and just skipped over it. I don't know how to go about it, but I want a refund from this place.

Having stayed at a Citizen m previously, we were familiar with the room size and ipad. As a couple we put the pillows under the window and turn the blanket so that if we need to get up we can do so without crawling over the other person. I would not like a long stay here because the room is very small but for one night it is great.

i had originally booked with them for Oct 29-31st for the zayn concert but it got postponed so i rescheduled my booking to jan 20-22. I asked if i would need to pay anything else because i had already paid $438.18 for the october dates and they said that the rate did not change. Then when i got there last night to check in they said i owed $1k and I said i had already paid. The woman checking me in said since it was 1am a manager wasn’t there and that they would let me stay but id need to speak with the manager in the morning. When i went in the morning it was a different person so I explained to her and showed her the messages i had saying the rate was not any different from my original booking from when I rescheduled the dates. She talked to the manager and told me that the rate changed because its inauguration week and i needed to pay the difference to be able to stay there. I told them i was going to find a different hotel to stay at and they said I had to pay for the few hours I was there and charged me $965. Don’t stay at this hotel!

This hotel is in a great location for visiting the museums. It is very trendy inside and the rooms are comfortable and quiet, but tiny! The loft bed is great for one person, but two people would be climbing over each other to get in and out. The tiny bathroom with frosted glass enclosure means no noise privacy. In the morning, you have to pay for coffee and the buffet (very nice) is $20 but there are no a la carte choices if you just want a yogurt or muffin. The decor is very clever, the first floor lounge areas are comfortable and the rooftop bar is great - but only two beer choices. It is really set up for high end cocktails, but there is a nice lobby bar as well.

Dear citizen Thank you for taking your time and writing a review! My room was clean and comfortable and the location couldn't be beat for the places I was visiting. I was able to walk to my destinations including the White House, Congressional office buildings, the Anthem theater, and several Smithsonian museums. I parked my rental car on the street and walked to my destinations as I did not want to look for parking at those places. Parking is free and there is no time limit as long as you park on the side of the street that is adjacent to the building on School street, 6th street and E street. If you park across the street on either street mentioned, you will have to move your car at 7am or you might get a ticket (although I didn't see anyone else move their car like I did and did not see tickets on those cars that remained on the other side of 6th street, just don't leave your car in front of the school across from the hotel's main entrance). There are meters that begin at 7am on E street on the side opposite of the building and I paid $5.50 for two hours. If you are traveling with a friend just know that you can see through the glass for the shower. There is a thin, see through curtain for it but it does not stop people from seeing your silhouette. I didn't feel cramped in the small room and I loved how comfortable it was and how it looked. I also loved being able to see the capitol building from my window.

No breakfast is not included. It is very expensive for what they offer
garage parking underground next door. pay seperately.
USA - all guests must be 18 years old or older to book a room and stay at citizenM (this includes the second guest in the room). Anyone under 18 years old can only stay with a parent or legal guardian. To visit our cloudM rooftop bars, you must be 21 years old or older.
First I would download the smart trip app. You would take the yellow line to L'Enfant plaza. It is a few blocks walk from there.
