The location of this place was gorgeous: stunning views, peaceful, tranquil. We really enjoyed a completely relaxing stay. The food was also wonderful and the service top class. Management were extremely accommodating. Unfortunately, the whole place is run down. We were told that there is to be an upgrade at some stage and it is sorely needed. The room upstairs...

Good place, well located, walk in after 3 days on the Track. Problems - evening meal - food trying too hard. Simpler food when walking would be great. Rooms - no ventilation, very hot. Bathroom grotty. I know this place has had problems, and changes of ownership, but just needs a big facelift. If there was another place at this...

What can I say except glad I didn't pay full price (had a Grabone voucher x2) for this last stop on an otherwise fabulous South Island trip of 11 nights. Shocking decor, smelly room (mould) with no views and toilet rocked on its base! Put our visiting family in the better of the 2 bad rooms. Complained re toilet and...

I stayed here one night as I walked the Queen Charlotte Track. After a 25 kilometre walk to get to Portage, you will find another 700 metre walk downhill once you have figured out from the route map where to go. I could not see a sign and other people made the same comment to me. Check in was easy...

Receptionist possessed a poor command of idiomatic English. Room was large, clean and adequately serviced. Internet connection was expensive, very slow and very patchy throughout the resort. Food in both bar and restaurant was satisfactory. Outstanding views from all areas of the resort. The main advantage was the proximity to Queen Charlotte Track.

I was injured and hobbling after a beating of a journey across the Kenepuru Saddle Ridge. Blisters as big as oranges - I looked like I needed a skin graft, came in so late I thought for sure that I would wake up without being fed that night… but to my delight the super awesome staff at Portage kept the...

We purchased 2 GrabOne vouchers in the spring to use when our friend arrived from overseas. I began reading reviews shortly after, & was dismayed to hear descriptions of an overpriced run-down lodge. We spent 2 nights there this week, and 1 evening meal with 2 courses was included. The rooms were a good size, with a comfortable king bed,...

Stayed one night with the family between Christmas and New Year. NIce rooms, lovely restaurant with some excellent wines. The staff could not have been more helpful (especially as our daughter had a biking accident nearby and the team went really out of their way to help us). A definite recommend.

We spent two nights here for our wedding anniversary on a "grab one" coupon. The best part of the stay was the excellent service given by all of the staff from front of desk to restaurant. Our neighbours had told them that it was our anniversary and when we arrived back to our room from our walk we had a...
