This room was very spacious with older wood furniture and fittings and the feel of the whole place was "quirky heritage". It was only an 8 minute walk to the centre of town, thus saving having to look for parking. We were well looked after and the breakfast was excellent - you could have fruit, cereal and/or cooked. If I ever went to Fremantle again I would choose Fothergill's.

Property looked nice on arrival but not a great welcome when the lady took forever to answer the doorbell and then clearly couldn't get rid of us quick enough! Everything seemed set up for contactless entry into our room (keypad etc) so really it would be so much nicer for us (and the lady) if you simply emailed instructions with entry code, rather than needing us to ring the bell and wait around on the doorstep wondering if anyone is in!
The room was absolutely lovely (English Room) and although the bathroom was down the hall, we knew that it was private and for us only. Loved all the character and knick knacks in the house.
Breakfast was fine except the (different) lady did not know we had ordered cooked breakfast until we had sat there for a while and went off to find her! Also, despite me emailing in advance about dietary requirements for my wife, and it being her birthday that day, they had simply not got in the ingredients she was hoping for. But breakfast was fine in the end.
So, definitely room for improvement on the staffing front, but nice property in a nice town :-)

Wow!! What a wonderful experience at Fothergills. A warm welcome was followed by a journey through time as we made our way to our room ( with a view)! The period furnishings are spectacular and the artwork and sculptures just extraordinary. You can spend half a day just enjoying the eclectic gallery of paintings that adorn the walls and then wander in the courtyard where brilliantly decorated life size cow statues and bronze sculptures continue the artful experience. This place is fun, it’s interesting, it’s curious. It has a wonderful warmth about it with comfy beds and lovely bathrooms! And the beautiful little Morris Minor enjoying a promotional role on the front nature strip sets the scene and era for the Fothergills journey. We loved it… thanks to Manager Susie and owner David… we’ll be back!
Ps. Breakfast is fantastic !

Really disappointed, booked a hotel and arrived at a Band B. On arrival I rang the bell (there were 2 main doors), and unsure if bell had rung, rang it again after 60 seconds. My welcome was “it’s a big house , it takes time to get to the door!” No hello welcome…
I am then put in a room with shower or bath and told its a shared bathroom…
After this, I try to log onto the wifi ( no code given on arrival) , the same person answers “it should be in your room!!” At this point I feel like saying, oh silly me, shall I go and look again.., or could you please enlighten me…,
The “atmosphere” continues at breakfast..I paid for breakfast so decide to ask for the cooked breakfast , I’m then told “Did you book direct or through booking.com? I could not really remember but advised I did pay for breakfast , to be advised sorry I’ve checked , it was booking.com and we only “give cooked breakfasts” to guests who book direct. It was the most unwelcoming place I have stayed in for years.

Response from David Cooke, Owner at Fothergills of Fremantle
Responded 31 Dec 2023
Thank you for writing but please allow me to correct several points of fact. " Really disappointed, booked a hotel and arrived at a Band B" You made the reservation through Booking.com and the second sentence on the B.com web page I have copied here " The 4-star bed and breakfast has garden views and is..." The next paragraph begins " At the bed and breakfast..., ". The fourth paragraph begins " WACA is 21 km from the bed and breakfast..." I am not sure why/how you did not notice you were booking a B&B It can take a minute to get from the front to the back of the large Victorian houses, or from one house to another so I do apologise for the delay as it is no fun having to stand for 60 seconds in the scorching summer heat. " I am then put in a room with shower or bath and told its a shared bathroom…" We never tell guests about shared bathrooms as NONE of our bathrooms is shared. In fact you were in the English Room, a large room with a four poster bed, two lounge chairs, table and two dining chairs, writing desk and chair, Bose hifi system, air con etc. You had the whole top floor to yourself where the large bathroom has twin basins, a shower and a bath. We only let one room in that house so why you had the impression you had to a share anything puzzles me. We do provide the wifi code on arrival but we also put it in the information folder in the room as some guests forget since it is quite long and has letters and numbers. Apologies if somehow you did not notice it in the information folder in your room. You did indeed pay for Bed AND Breakfast. Every guest is offered, included in the room rate, our large and extensive, continental breakfast. (Eight cereals - including gluten free - yoghurt, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, berry compote, rhubarb, peaches, pears, grapes, apples, mandarins, kiwi fruit, apricots - although this does vary a little with the season - dates, prunes, dried cranberries, dried mango, trail mix fill one sideboard, The other sideboard has two or three fruit juices, cold water and an ice machine, three or four artisan breads, jams, marmalade, local honey, peanut butter, nutella, and vegemite. I challenge you to give me the name of any other B&B that provides such an extensive spread). Meanwhile I don't think you mentioned the complimentary soft drinks and fresh milk in your room fridge, nor the complimentary tea, coffee, sweet and savoury snacks in your rooms, nor the complimentary afternoon tea/coffee with cakes and biscuits downstairs. When Booking.com started they took 5% commission, then 10%, then 12.5% and now 15%. For this reason we can offer a complimentary cooked breakfast to guests booking direct (who also do so at our most favourable rate) but for bookings through a third party there is a small extra fee for a cooked breakfast. This is clearly shown on the Booking.com page which I have copied here " Please note that the breakfast provided is continental. A fully-cooked breakfast is available for an additional AUD 15 per person, per day. You can inform the property at check-in." This is common throughout hospitality in Australia - and the UK I apologise again that you had so many misunderstandings but would urge you to read and listen carefully as all your points could have been anticipated given the information with which you were provided. .

This BNB appears charming and upscale. Our expectations of an BnB is that it is hosted. It is not key left in the room door.
Greeting was under welcoming car parking is pot luck on the verge despite there being a rear car park.
The room reserved was true to pictured but the fine details are lacking
Bed linen and bath linen worn and tired. One bathroom for 4 rooms shared.
Decor is eclectic with no clear theme or style just a collection of art pieces
The fridge contained previous guest drinks.
Security a concern as the bedroom would not latch nor would the balcony door
The in room compendium is full of history but not very useful as a guide to local restaurants or what’s on. And with the host no where to be found your on your own
Breakfast is served 08.00!to 9.00 we did stay to experience as it was too late for our schedule.
Over all the experience did not meet our expectations. Similarly price hotel rooms offer better value service and amenity

I was puzzled reading your review and I did wonder if you were confusing us with another place. To address your points - There are 5 parking spaces and we have 5 rooms. We do not have a car park at the rear. The English Room which you booked has its own parking space in its own driveway. which is not pot luck. I am surprised about the linen; it was upgraded only months ago to 1000 count finest cotton. The English Room DOES NOT share a bathroom with four others; it does not share with anyone else!. The English Room is the only room we let in that building so there is a large room with four poster, bed,. lounge chairs, table and dining chairs, desk and chair. There is air conditioning and a Bose hi fi system. The English Room has, its own large PRIVATE bathroom (ie shared with no-one) with twin basins, bath and shower along with a large landing furnished with writing table, chairs and a settle. We do indeed have an art collection, one of the most extensive private collections of visual arts in Perth including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass and marquetry together with a historic map collection covering over 4 centuries the linking theme being local and Australian.. In the room fridge we provide fresh milk daily and complimentary soft drinks - not left from a previous occupant! . We also provide a variety of smacks and nibbles - also all complimentary. Also complimentary is the afternoon tea/coffee/cake/biscuits. The bedroom door has a lock with a key - and I have just checked that it does indeed work. The balcony door has a latch and a small sliding bolt both of which are working. The only correct fact in your review is that breakfast is served 8-9. Overall I think you must be reviewing another property.

It was a lovely stay in the style of Brit while in Australia. The property has so much to offer in terms of aesthetic appeal that one would need some time to explore it fully. Breakfast was great and the rooms were spacious. The property is located just 5-7 mins walk from the city centre/square.

Managers were very friendly and helpful with after hours check-in instructions and looking for a lost item after we vacated. The room (endeavour) was huge and felt private with its own outdoor seating area. Most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. The continental breakfast selection was extensive for a small bnb. Exceeded all expectations.

Really quirky B&B spread over a number of 19th century buildings. We had first floor room overlooking sea with a separate bathroom. Classically decorated with style lots of good art and sculpture. Comfortable bed bathroom great breakfast served in wonderful conservatory in building next door and was superb. Number of huge plaster cows around buildings simply add to the general great ambience. Parking outside or by side of buildings with easy walking access to Fremantle. All in all for us a great choice especially if you fed up of the plastic sameness of modern hotels. Be aware no lifts (very old buildings) and steep stairs so if you have issues go for lower floor.

If you want to feel like you have stepped back in time, into a world of artistic and creative abundance, then Fothergills is for you.
The whole facility is more like an art gallery than a B&B/Hotel. paintings adorn every wall, with sculptures of multiple mediums placed in the front and rear gardens. Some modern others contemporary, but a vast mixture of styles and tastes.
The furnishings are period and the floors covered with Persian style rugs, our four poster bed suited it's surroundings quite well.
Breakfast was sufficient with continental or fully cooked or both. Breakfast service was prompt and the staff polite and helpful. You will not be left hungry.
Booking was easy, but they get busy so book as early as you can so as not to miss out.
There are two negatives small but need pointing out :
The little fridge is hidden in a lovely wooden cabinet. TOO small and not efficient.
The tiling in the bath room needs some repairs. Some small cracks spoil the overall feeling of old world luxury.
One last failing. Make sure you have a time piece (watch, phone etc.) The are many lovely clocks from Grandfather to standard wall clocks, but none of them were working.
The goods far outweighs the bads.
Great value and atmosphere.

My husband and I spent 3 wonderful nights at Fothergills recently. We stayed in the O' Connor room. Lovely comfortable bed, plenty of amenities and treats.
Very good pre visit communication . We loved the beautiful Victorian Terrace House filled with wonderful Art and Sculptures collected over the years by the owner. We thought that we had the great experience of sleeping and living in a stunning Art Gallery with a very good curater.
Breakfast was delicious, the staff went to so much effort to enable us to entertain a relative we had never met before but had communicated with for years. We sat in the lovely courtyard on a sunny day, a perfect end to a great stay. Thank you so much to the staff and owners for their help, friendliness and we will certain recommend Fothergills and all its treasures. We hope to meet you again.
Kind Regards from Jennifer & Juris.
