Detailed Reviews
We stayed in a double room for one night here, just looking for a low-cost place to sleep. The staff was super accommodating, making sure we were taken care of at all times and helping us out when we needed to check out in the early hours of the morning. There was a wonderful community vibe with all the other guests, and we would've loved to spend more time there if we were staying longer in Fremantle. There are plenty enough toilets and showers and lots of open areas.
Our room had a large enough bed for two people with the type of thin, lightweight mattress you'd expect from a backpackers. There was a large, powerful ceiling fan and a floor fan to keep us cool all night and a single power cord to charge appliances. The hostel is impressively secure, with guests needing a code both for the front entrance and a separate code for their room. We felt very safe staying there.
It did get (and stay) a bit loud at night, even on a Tuesday. The fans helped muffle some of the noise, but there was a lot of yelling and loud music playing well past midnight. For this reason alone, we probably wouldn't stay again, but I'd still very much recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun and friendly place to stay in Fremantle.

As soon as I arrived here in Fremantle I came straight away here, this hostel has been suggested by some many friends that stayed here before me.
The vibes and the people who work here are awesome, full of artists and people that like sharing beers and nice chats with you.
Kitchen, bedroom and toilets always very clean, drier and washing machine very cheap.
Well menaged and manteined.
Also good for parties so come here no way to go anywhere else!

When I arrived, they said there would be a 'video game party' the following night. I take this to mean that people will be playing video games in some way. A reasonable assumption, right?
No.
A video game party means an ALL NIGHT outdoor dance/club party out back where people dress in video game costumes. Fine, no issues there, I'm staying on the second floor. Except that the huge speakers used for this event are up on scaffolding and are about 3 feet from my head on the other side of the wall. Literally ALL NIGHT there is booming club music going nonstop, combined with drunk people yelling at the top of their lungs. Incredibly loud. It was like trying to sleep in the middle of a rave. Combined with this, every two hours some wasted European bros would come in, turn the lights on, make lots of noise, and then go back to the party leaving all the lights on and the door open. The third time I rolled over (not asleep) about 4AM and they were snorting coke off the bookshelf. I don't really care about drug use, but this was getting ridiculous.
The 'music' never went off until daylight. I got zero sleep. The next morning I got up, and very politely told the guy at the front desk that, basically, I don't care if you have a party, or that I got no sleep, but I shouldn't have to pay for it. All I wanted was one nights money back- like $32 dollars or something- because even in the crappiest of hostels, you shouldn't have to have a giant speaker going off all night by your head. The guy at the desk was pretty nice and admitted it got out of control, but he couldn't give me my money back without talking to the owner.
<note - at this point, about 8:30 AM on a Sunday, some guys were still partying out back and came in to buy more beer. Front desk guy wouldn't sell it to them>
I walked around Freemantle for a bit while he tried to call the owner. Came back- no luck. Owner wouldn't answer his cell phone. The guy at the desk finally gave me $20 and I figured that was all I was getting, so I got on the train to the airport after the WORST NIGHT EVER.
Ask yourself these questions before you stay at this hostel:
--Do you wear axe body spray?
--Are a backpacking dude from Germany who wants to get with as many chicks as possible during your gap year in Australia?
--Do you hate sleeping?
--Do you like staying up all night drinking and getting high?
You should probably answer "Yes" to all four of these before considering booking here. There are plenty of other hostels in Frio where they consider that people come to a place with beds IN ORDER TO GET SLEEP.
To Firehouse: Sorry for the negative review, but after I was refused a refund, you had it coming.
No.

If you're looking for a place where heavy drugs, bullying, freeze out and oppression of women is allowed and encouraged, you should check in to the old fire station in fremantle.. My first impression was that it seemed like a cool place but as soon as I got to know the people and the staff a little better it was aweful.. The rooms and the common areas are nice and clean but the human environment are disgusting

The location of the hostel first caught my attention- the former firestation of Fremantle, a 100 year old building in good repair and retaining its old charm, which I prefer to other sterile new hostels. There is an Indian restaurant, the Bengal, in the downstairs section- the big red doors were opened up at night to allow the "Freo Doctor" (sea breeze) to cool down the balmy nights. Delicious curries, friendly people and popular with British tourists and ex-pats. Curries from $3.50 out the back for residents.
The hostel itself had excellent facilites, and was cheap at just $15.50 per night on the weekly rate. Unlimited internet, washing machines, tea, coffee, movies, Sony PS2 games were all included in the price. Nice entertainment area outside, huge kitchen and common area upstairs, and a ladies section which was quaint. Most people I chatted to stayed longer than they anticipated. The entertainment is very good, bbq night, quizes, and a Pink Party while I was there. I would reccommend for backpackers 18-35 who want to party.

I have stayed in many hostels in the 2 years travelling in Oz, I enjoyed this hostel the least.
There is a few good points, The hostel itself is very large with very spacious common areas with TV.. Free WIFI is available and it is fast.
But it is filthy!! it has taken 'quirky and hippy' to the extreme and its just scabby and dirty and disgusting!!!
Most people staying there are long term residents, so i found there was no space in the dorm to even leave my suitcase anywhere near my bed! and guest not very welcoming to new guests.
Dorms very dark and smelly, very unclean, i think they get "cleaned" once a week. it didn't look like they had been cleaned for a very long time.
Loud music and people walking in and out of the rooms talking very loud throughout the night. So got hardly any sleep.
Very strong smell of weed everywhere.....including the bedrooms!!!
Bathrooms really needing updating or just cleaning would be good! couldn't bring myself to even shower in them!!!!
Perfect place to stay if you are a 'too cool for school, rude hippy, who enjoys living in squalor, doesn't want any sleep or doesn't like to shower.'
I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I was very happy to checkout.

I found most people here to be very friendly and welcoming. As the other reviewer said, it was good value, perfect for a younger crew, lots of people stay to work and live for 3 months, so it becomes like a big family. Probably not good if you're looking for somewhere quiet to relax. I was there over Christmas and hung out in the spa a lot- some very nice boys there! Staff were good fun, and organised parties and trips and bbq's, and a trip to Rottnest Island on Xmas Day which was beautiful!. I would stay here again for sure!
