I don't know how to describe this property...it's just a little odd... Our first impression when we walked in was that we were in a consignment store...just a lot of old stuff everywhere...clutter. In the hallway leading to our room...clutter. Then our room was four walls of mirrors and filled with more stuff... On the more positive note, the staff was great...couldn't have been more helpful and responsive...and the food is very good...their kitchen makes the best bread we've ever had!! We just didn't understand the high rating.
Mirrors and clutter make this an 80's retro themed small hotel. No windows in the room to open just wall to wall mirrors and crap everywhere. The halls have clutter the rooms have it. The grounds however are exquisite with glamping type tents. Nice outdoor pool. The breakfast was average nothing exceptional. No real protein except runny eggs. Dinner was also average.
We spent a week at Carmo’s after cycling the French Alps and the Pyrenees. Our time was one of the most enjoyable weeks. Every need was catered for with care and attentiveness. We stayed in one of the “tents” (glamping at its best) which had wonderful space and views. Choosing to read in the gardens behind or poolside, with lunch was a delight. The eclectic collection of art and decor made you feel like you were in a home of some very special friends with great taste. The staff - everyone was very helpful and engaging. Special thanks to Nancy Fernandes (do the wine tasting with Nancy as she really does know her wines) and Joana Amorim who shared a passion for making your stay as comfortable as it could be.
We stayed at Carmo’s for two nights with our Backroads hiking group. Carmo’s is a lovely boutique hotel with it’s own style and flair. Our room was comfortable, functional and uniquely decorated. The modern bathroom met our needs however brighter lighting would be an improvement. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the hotel, along with a sampling of their wonderful house wines. Be sure to visit the dollhouse displays and the pony. There are comfortable spaces to meet with friends and the friendly staff make you feel at home. We were in the region for a hiking holiday and the hikes near-by on the Portuguese Camino are fantastic. I will recommend this hotel to friends- it is eclectic, comfortable and memorable.
