Nestled in the Seven Valleys, Black Gold was originally the old Wallerawang School, built in 1881. Through a series of imaginative transformations since 1995, Black Gold Motel & The Crib Room Restaurant was created – a clean, comfortable, unique, award-winning experience. Surrounded by world-class attractions such as the Glow Worm Tunnel, Zig Zag Railway, Capertee Valley, Jenolan Caves, and Wolgan Valley. If you are into dirt bikes, off-road 4WD, bushwalking, bird watching, fishing, or anything in the outdoors, you will be surrounded by endless opportunities. Despite its humble foundations, Black Gold Motel has established itself amongst some of the best hotels in Australia. Trip Advisor awarded us the 2020 Travellers Choice “Best of the Best” award for service which placed us #5 in Australia & #11 in the South Pacific. The walls carry echoes of the region’s mining history. The name ‘Black Gold’ originates from the local coal mining industry. The coal was nicknamed ‘black gold'. The buildings of the Motel have fond memories for generations of locals who attended the school, and the boutique property stands as a proud icon of the town. In recognition of the property’s history, many rooms are named after school teachers & local mines to celebrate the rich industrial history of the area.
We also specialise in hosting meetings, events & conferences. In 2023 we opened a state-of-the-art facility "The Barton Centre" that can host groups large and small to meet, greet, learn & network in style.
