We had a four night break here in Studio 1. Wonderful and much needed time away. Owners Sarah & Andrew were very accomodating. Beautiful views across the bay. Lots of time spent out on the deck enjoy the sunsets. We were luck to have generally sunny weather which was lovely to wake up to. The property is set directly behind where the ferry docks. A close but very steep walk up a dirt road about ten minutes. The town centre of Oneroa is about a 15/20 min walk away but that’s all relative. There’s a couple of ways to get there. Either uphill on the main road or via a couple of different walking tracks which we loved. Part of being in NZ is to enjoy the outdoors so the walk wasn’t a big deal to us. One tip would be, get whatever supplies you want during business hours as a lot is closed afterwards. We hired a car ($69) from the ferry terminal one of the days to check the island out. Re wineries…most are closed Mon-Wed. Wineries though like Cable Bay & Passage Rock we’re open 7 days. A great break, we’ll be back!

The apartment we stayed in was quite comfortable, clean and thoughtfully designed. It is quite a walk up a hill and not a finished road, so quite dusty and rocky. You can walk to the town of Oneroa where there are restaurants, coffee shops, and a nice beach. We did end up renting a car to explore the island which is quite small, but we didn't feel like waiting for buses to get around. Nice stay and off the beaten path.

We stayed at Studio 2 of The Moorings just after Christmas 2018. The studio is smart and clean, with all the amenities you would expect (wi-fi, kettle, toaster, grill, microwave, heat pump etc). We were nicely greeted on arrival by the owner's daughter and Rocky the Labrador, who showed us to our room and explained all the details. The view from the room and deck is absolutely superb, looking out over the harbor, Rangitoto volcano and the city in the distance. We had some amazing sunsets sitting on the deck. Though I would advise mosquito repellent if you sit out on the deck after dark. The deck is fairly private, and there is a nice shared garden with the other studio that has a BBQ and outside eating area. The town is a fairly easy 20 minute walk away, or you can get a bus from the ferry terminal. The town is fairly small, but has some nice restaurants, bars and shops. When we left, Andrew the owner was very nice, and gave us a lift down to the ferry. That was very appreciated, Thank you very much. Would highly recommend, and will definitely hope to stay here again.

Usually when in Auckland we spend it all at my brother and SIL’s place but this time I really wanted to show (Aussie) husband that it’s not all just boring architecture, queues and terrible traffic so booked us 3 nights here. Flipping awesome stay! Adding my 2 cents about THAT VIEW, does anyone ever get sick of it? Just read a few other reviews and now making sense why Andrew sent us such detailed instructions on getting here and also a plug-in mosquito zapper lol. Things I loved: • THE VIEW. Rain or shine it’s an absolute stunner. I spent 15 min watching one of the ferries coming in, it’s like being hypnotised • The glass balcony doors have little hooks so they don’t slam in the wind –clever • Very spacious. Husband and I kind of overdid the wineries on Day 1 and spent the second day laying low and pottering about in the apartment in the morning, so cosy. Plenty of books/magazines if you also end up a bit dusty from the overabundance of wineries. • Was just reading about the lack of permanent stovetop, hah we didn’t’ even notice b’c too many delicious places to eat out –otherwise we just needed it for breakfast and to create some cheese/tapas platters to eat out on the balcony • I loved the abundance of plug sockets everywhere…nothing drives me more mental than turning up to a place and finding only one poorly situated plug socket (I know I’m a weirdo). Excellent and consistent free wifi too Room for improvement (also note as per my husband: I am a fussy princess; also note: the last place we stayed was hotel in Dubai, land of gold plated bathrooms): • Bathroom is large/well equipped but fairly plain, such a pity b’c it’s in stark contrast to the rest of the apartment. Maybe add a hanging plant or similar to improve on the ‘rugby dressing shed’ chic? Also all the handwashes/dishwashing liquid etc are Ecostore brand ..except for the shampoo/conditioner/shower bodywash. Would suggest keeping all the same for a luxury accommodation? I did LOVE the heated bathroom mirror though • Also still on the bathroom, would have appreciated a few more hooks in there –on the wall and beside the sink to hang the handtowel • the roller blind over the balcony glass doors need a wash –mildew accumulating at the bottom. I think a couple of lightbulbs need replacing too • Tried hunting for a box of tissues and couldn’t find any (this is usually standard issue for most accomodations), must admit though I didn’t email Andrew about this b’c we randomly had a box of our own • Getting really finicky now but suggest getting a set of matching coat hangers for the wardrobe –only to bring it up to ‘luxury’ standards Reading this myself, I realise that if that’s all the whinge I’ve got to say about The Moorings it was an absolutely fantastic stay. Andrew met us on arrival (even though had provided excellent instructions on getting in) and when I emailed to request extra manchester, turned up within 2 minutes flat. The location is so convenient, we walked down the driveway back to the ferry terminal and jumped on the next bus into Oneroa –main village 5 min away- (cos all of them go past there) without even looking up how to get anywhere. You can also book Hop On Hop Off Explorer bus tix at the ferry terminal for some vineyard hopping. If you have any issues getting a cab up the driveway, we used WaiCabs for a flat rate of $10. We had such a relaxing and enjoyable stay…and I think I’ve lined up some future bookings from all my Aussie mates judging by how jealous they are of my social media pics! Thank you Andrew …did I mention I will miss the view??
