The Sands Torquay garners praise from many travelers for its spacious, freshly refurbished rooms with stunning views, though a few report occasional maintenance issues. Guests commend the friendly staff, despite some noting service inconsistencies. Its prime location near the town, sea, and golf course is widely appreciated.
While opinions on value differ, with some criticizing the cost of food, the amenities, including a well-maintained golf course and beach access, are generally lauded. The hotel's cleanliness and inviting atmosphere, complete with thoughtful touches, have also earned high marks from visitors.

Detailed Reviews
We booked a three night stay in a Family Room (201 and 203; two rooms on the second floor with an interconnecting door) for four people (two adults, two children) over the long AFL Grand Final weekend for our daughter's 4th birthday.
Gabbi did a great job answering all of my questions on the phone the day before we arrived, and also arranged a balloon and some sweets to be left in the room as a surprise for our daughter, which she was thrilled with. Thank you Gabbi for setting that up for her.
Our rooms and bathrooms were clean, modern and spacious, and the balcony was very helpful for drying/airing wet clothes and towels. The rooms were close to both the lift and the stairs, but there was minimal noise from the other rooms or the corridor. There was ample parking available at any time, with minimal walking distance from the car park to the lift/stairs.
Breakfast options were tasty and filling, with generous portion sizes for both adults and children.
We used the pool on a few occasions, which was kept at a nice water temperature and not too deep (1.40m at the deep end). There were a few pool noodles and kickboards provided for general use, and pool towels were also provided on entry.
The beach is a 5 minute walk away, and the Esplanade is a nice area for kids wanting to ride scooters or bikes. For all other needs outside of the premises in the Torquay or Jan Juc area, all major supermarkets and plenty of varied dining options are within a 5-15 minute drive away.
The check in/check out process was easy and seamless, and all staff were pleasant and friendly.
When we returned home, my wife realised that she had left her phone charger in our room. After contacting the hotel, Cybil went above and beyond to confirm that it had been found, and made arrangements for it to be posted to us today. Thanks again for all your help Cybil.
We'd definitely stay at The Sands Torquay again.

Very spacious rooms ( we had the 2 bedroom golf view)
Disappointing basic amenities were not provided such as shower caps, robes or slippers.
2 bedrooms suite A/C was very loud and difficult to regulate.
The pool is used for lessons during the week, so just be mindful.
A kids breakfast menu would also be useful as $22 is very pricey for scrambled eggs and a large piece of sourdough.
The tennis court is good, just remember to bring your own rackets and tennis balls.

Such an amazing place to stay.
Located 5 minutes from the beach and on arrival dog treats, balls and poo bags in two dog bowls were waiting for us in the room.
Room was beautiful and had a little outdoor area for the dogs so they could stretch their legs and go to the toilet.
Deena and the rest of the team were extremely helpful upon check in.
Anna who tended too our room gave us such helpful tips so we made the most out of Torquay.
For anyone wondering why the limit is 18kg for dogs it’s because the outside area for the dogs isn’t huge and a larger dog would be really restrained there.
Whenever we need a getaway to the beach this is our go too.

Our room was clean, great view and location. Hospitality staff were exceptional and really lovely, however there was a lack in administration staff communication. Administration staff had a lot of issues trying to get us an extra night in for 50% off (which we received multiple emails and text messages to upgrade and thought why not) my partner had to call over 15 times to book this extra night in. After trying to make multiple attempts of trying to get into contact with the staff, he was told we couldn’t do it as we booked through booking.com. (yet we were still receiving multiple messages for this) then the staff eventually allowed it, which we were grateful for. When we checked in we were told we were only staying for 1 night however we upgraded from 1 to 2 nights. The following morning after staying the night, we had a staff member walk into the room without knocking. They had no idea we had checked in the night before and was very apologetic, however this was not very professional. We also upgraded and purchased a breakfast. Staff said this was not included in our invoice, yet I paid for this and did certainly come up on my invoice. Regardless of it not being visible on their end the hospitality staff honoured it which we were grateful for, however we were not impressed that this didn’t show on their end and I had to provide evidence that I did pay for the breakfast.

We booked a night specifically for the indoor pool. The 11yo I was travelling with was devastated when we walked into the pool area early Sunday morning to a sign advising it was closed due to works. It’s important to note: this wasn’t advertised at the time of booking, we weren’t advised at check in, there were no signs at reception or notices in the room or the pool. And not w word was mentioned when I spoke with reception late Saturday evening about accessing the pool for the remainder of our stay. Needless to say it was a disappointing end to the stay and I had a very upset little person to appease as a result. I understand works need to happen but it’s vital guest expectations are properly managed. To be honest, I kind of get the sense staff are most interested in guests visiting for golf and not really in those simply seeking leisure and recreation in other ways. We were granted a late check out Saturday evening which was good (but not because of the pool issue) but I was still charged the extra $20 for a room upgrade even after I complained about the hotel’s lack of communication. When I checked out I got a “ thanks” from the reception staff member who couldn’t even manage a goodbye. Of course we won’t be staying again because of this but in an effort leave this review on a high note, the beds are super comfy and overall the venue is quiet and low key.

I can’t speak to the golf facilities here and did not try the breakfast however I can speak to the room. It’s very basic which would be fine if they weren’t charging $300 per night. The room smelt like a nursing home- that mix of cheap deodorizer and cleaning products mixed with something unpleasant, we tried to air it out but the smell prevailed. The shelf in the shower was so flimsy it buckled when you pushed on the pump of body wash provided. Terrible shower pressure. Curtains did not fully close, which allows morning light in of course but in our case also let in a constant steam of light at night from the car park our room overlooked. The room was not well insulated from outside sound - we could clearly hear the next rooms tv blaring away and people talking in the halls. All in all- far too expensive for what it is.

Really enjoyed my 2 nights stay at the Sands Torquay. The room was beautifully renovated with stunning view over the golf course. The staff were very friendly. The highlight is the location, just a short walking distance to the beach and 7 minutes drive to the centre town with many restaurants and bars around. The desk lamp with wireless charging station is a nice touch. Will definitely return and bring my pet to stay in their dog friendly room next time.

We booked a 2 bedroom suite for our family and we’re provided with 2 x 1 bedroom units next to each other. As a family of 3 this was but appropriate (nor was it what we booked) We intentionally booked a 2 bedroom suite so we could each have a bedroom and enjoy the living space. The staff couldn’t have been more rude or less helpful in resolving this for us. We ended up with a trundle in the living space. And no offer of a refund.
The location was beautiful.
But we did not get what we booked or paid for and the staff were very rude and unhelpful.

The Sands has modern stylish rooms with balconies, there is a bar and restaurant onsite as well as a gym and swimming pool. Located a short walk to the local beach which wasn’t crowded at all!
Best of all, every one of the staff from Tracey at reception to the hospitality staff and even the cleaners were friendly and welcoming. It truly felt like being welcomed home!
Keep in mind that because the Sands is located away from the main part of Torquay that is why the beach is quieter, it also means if you want to eat in town it is advisable to drive in.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Sands for your stay in Torquay, especially if you want a golf course on your doorstep and quiet surrounds and excellent service!!
